Commanders Land Steelers Star in Blockbuster NFL Mock Trade
Fresh off making a shocking run to the conference championship, the Washington Commanders have been hard at work upgrading their roster. In a recent mock trade, they make a huge splash to firmly cement themselves as a threat to contend in the NFC.
Ahead of training camp, the Commanders are one of a handful of teams dealing with a player holding out for a new deal. While they try to rectify things with wide receiver Terry McLaurin, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a similar situation. Heading into the final year of his contract, star linebacker TJ Watt is in search of a long-term commitment before the 2025 campaign gets underway.
As this standoff between Watt and the Steelers continues, speculation continues to arise of Pittsburgh moving on from the former Defensive Player of the Year. Though this outcome is rather unlikely, Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski put together a handful of trade packages for the star linebacker. In one scenario, the Commanders part with a first, second, and third-round pick to land Watt in Washington.

"The Washington Commanders are in the position any team wants to be in if it's going to make a splash move to improve its roster," Sobleski wrote. "They have a franchise quarterback in place under a rookie contract. Jayden Daniels isn't going to see top-of-the-market money for another five years. This point is exactly when the Commanders need to go all-in and capitalize on that financial advantage. The fact that Washington lacks a true-blue pass-rusher makes a potential move for Watt even more of a necessity."
Led by an emerging superstar in Jayden Daniels, the Commanders have the pieces in place to shine on the offensive end. However, if they were able to land a player the caliber of Watt, it would instantly put them in the conversation of Super Bowl contenders this season. His presence would immediately raise the Commanders' floor on defense, and help some address some of the team's glaring weak points.

While acquiring Watt would be a huge addition for the Commanders, they should prioritize dealing with their in-house situations first. McLaurin is a foundational piece to the organization and will be a driving force of their success in 2025. Knowing this, Washington needs to work out a deal with the star wideout so he'll rejoin his teammates in training camp and beyond.

NFL reporter has awkward Deebo Samuel moment after revealing finger injury
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo did not make Deebo Samuel too happy at the end of an NFL Network interview when he appeared to accidentally reveal that the Commanders' new wide receiver was dealing with a finger injury. The awkward moment happened just as the interview was wrapping up and Garafolo began explaining why he wasn't going to shake Samuel's hand. 'Deebo Samuel joined us on Inside Training Camp live. Usually, I give a handshake when a guy leaves,' Garafolo said. Advertisement 3 Deebo Samuel (r.) reacts during an interview with NFL Network. Advertisement 'But I tried to shake your hand on the way up, you said, 'No, no, no, no. I got a little — I jammed my finger today. Jammed my finger,' he said. Seeing the unhappy look on Samuel's face or NFL Network analyst Marc Ross, Garafolo paused and asked, 'Oh, was I not supposed to say that?' Ross indicated that he wasn't, and Garafolo attempted to get out of the interview without anymore goofs. Advertisement 'Alright, edit that part out,' Garafolo replied. 'Strike that, it didn't happen. I'll give him a left-handed fist bump. I ain't getting anything now.' 3 Deebo Samuel (r.) participates in an interview at training camp. Samuel's reaction was a bit odd, considering that the jammed finger had already been reported on by others at training camp. Advertisement Samuel apparently jammed the finger after taking a pass from Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels that hit his hands, ESPN reported. The veteran wide receiver was traded to the Commanders this past offseason and is coming off a 2024 campaign with the 49ers in which he recorded 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. Samuel is hoping to rebound from last season with a Commanders team that is coming off a trip to the NFC Championship game.

Steelers OLB Alex Highsmith injured at training camp, HC Mike Tomlin gives update
Another injury has struck the Pittsburgh Steelers at training camp. Following Sunday's practice at training camp, HC Mike Tomlin revealed to reporters that OLB Alex Highsmith had suffered a groin injury. "The only new injury to mention, Alex Highsmith didn't finish," Tomlin said. "Don't know the severity of it. Over here on the one-on-one pass rush, he stopped. He said he felt, maybe his groin, but we'll evaluate it and be more definitive next time we talk — not only about the injury but the significance of it." Highsmith has previously dealt with several groin injuries in his career, missing one game in 2021 and three games in 2024. Hopefully, his groin injury isn't as serious this go-around, but the Steelers do boast incredible depth behind him — underrated pass rusher OLB Nick Herbig and talented rookie OLB Jack Sawyer. We at Steelers Wire will provide an update on Highsmith when more information on the extent of his injury becomes available — but fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for one part of the best edge-rushing duo in the NFL.
