New scholarships to develop semiconductors, quantum tech talent: Tan See Leng
Find out what's new on ST website and app. Nearly $700 million has been committed to the research and development of quantum technology by the Singapore authorities since 2002. SINGAPORE - Two new scholarship tracks have been launched to encourage graduates to pursue further studies and research in semiconductor and quantum technologies, strategic to Singapore's ambition to be a deep tech hub. The two new tracks under the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) Graduate Scholarships (AGS) opened for application on July 25. The AGS (Semiconductor) and AGS (Quantum) scholarships will add to the agency's two existing graduate scholarship tracks. A total of 139 of such scholarships were given out in the past 5 years. 'Technological shifts and geopolitical developments are reshaping the global economy. To stay ahead, Singapore must build capabilities in strategic sectors like semiconductors and quantum technologies,' said Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology Dr Tan See Leng. Speaking at a scholarship ceremony held at The Theatre at Mediacorp on July 25 , he said that Singapore's thriving economy has been powered by science and technology. He cited a $123 million facility - the National Semiconductor Translation and Innovation Centre for Gallium Nitride (NSTIC GaN) - that was launched in June. It enables Singapore to produce advanced semiconductors for the design of smaller and more energy-efficient devices crucial for the development of 5G and 6G communications and satellite systems. The Republic also accounts for 10 per cent of chips produced globally and around 20 per cent of global semiconductor manufacturing equipment production, according to the Economic Development Board. Quantum computers are able to solve problems that are considered too difficult for traditional computers, and are tipped to lead to new breakthroughs in fields such as medicine, materials and better artificial intelligence (AI). But infrastructure and strategy alone cannot power innovation, said Dr Tan. 'It is exceptional talents like you who turn ideas into reality,' he added, addressing those in the audience, including new scholarship recipients. 'Scholars on these tracks will be matched to field-specific research projects, receive specialised training and gain valuable industry exposure.' This will prepare them to drive innovation in national initiatives like NSTIC GaN and Singapore's quantum strategy , working alongside local and global experts, he added. In a statement on July 25, A*STAR said those on the semiconductor track will be trained in areas such as chip design, materials science, and advanced packaging through PhD programmes in local universities. Potential scholars on the quantum track will also pursue their PhD in local universities, with a focus on areas such as quantum sensing, communication and computing. These are applicable in the fields of secure data transmission, precision diagnostics, and advanced simulation. Aside from nurturing skilled talents, Dr Tan also spoke on the importance of bringing science from the lab to the real-world in advancing the country's position as a global hub for science and technology. 'We must encourage our researchers to be entrepreneurial and attuned to real-world challenges,' said Dr Tan, who added that the co-founder and chief executive of Cosmos Innovation, which has helped to strengthen Singapore's position as a semiconductor hub while building more resilient global supply chains. Dr Vijay Chandrasekhar's deep-tech startup uses AI to accelerate the discovery and optimisation of new materials for next-generation semiconductors and solar technologies. Said Dr Tan: 'While leading AI programmes at the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research, Dr Chandrasekhar worked with semiconductor partners and recognised that the industry needed more than just incremental improvements to meet growing demands for efficiency and scalability in chip development.' He added that the company's solutions have helped manufacturers to reduce costs, improve performance, and develop sustainable technologies. 'These journeys remind us that science is not just about discovery - it is about impact,' said Dr Tan.

Towards reaching the goal, she said the corporation entered into an agreement with AGS (Academy of Gandhian Studies), a city-based NGO for better waste management through segregation of waste at source. ITC (Indian Tobacco Company), a leading company, will support the AGS in the project i. e best waste management under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Accordingly, the Commissioner said the AGS will take up the grassroot level awareness programme for segregation of waste at source i. e from every household in the city. Apart from segregation of waste, the AGS will also take up creating awareness on effective recycling of waste and also preparation of home compost. Despite the corporation's best efforts which has been implementing door-to-door collection of waste, the segregation of waste is not followed effectively. Hence the corporation roped in NGO AGS for creating awareness on segregation of waste to achieve 100% waste segregation. AGS Executive Director Gopala Krishna Murthy, Deputy Commissioner Amaraiah and AGS coordinator Kumari were present.

Suzuki Vitara further improved by significant revisions
Easy to drive and offering excellent practicality, it's not hard to see why Suzuki's compact SUV continues to appeal to those on the lookout for a new hybrid crossover at a reasonable price. For 2025, the model was upgraded with redefined SUV styling, an even higher level of standard equipment as well as further improved hybrid efficiency. The Vitara now uses the simplified Motion and Ultra grade names in line with those used for the S-Cross, Swace and Swift models. The Suzuki Vitara catches the sunlight Exterior styling revisions include a redesigned front grille and bumper and a sharper rear upper spoiler incorporating rear window side spoilers. To complete the look, there's also a set of new design 17-inch alloy wheels along with the addition of two new colour shades, namely metallic blue/black dual-tone and a dark grey metallic single tone finish, both available as options. A higher level of safety tech is now available as standard for both Motion and Ultra models including Lane Keep Assist, Intelligent Speed Control, Driver Monitoring System and eCall. Both grades now include an upgraded Dual Sensor Brake Support system, which now provides autonomous emergency braking through a combination of camera and radar, so it can detect pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists as well as other cars. Inside, there's a new 9.0-inch media display that offers navigation and wireless smartphone compatibility, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The interior is well laid-out, with some nicer materials interspersed with some cheaper plastics. The Vitara has a smart look from all angles As standard, you get keyless entry and start, high beam assist, auto-dim rear-view mirror and rear parking sensors. Moving up to the Ultra grade increases standard specification even further with a panoramic sliding sunroof, suede/leather seat fabric, front and rear parking sensors, electric folding door mirrors with built-in indicators and overhead storage console. Behind the wheel, the Vitara handles nicely, is composed when cruising and has a willing engine that offers good levels of torque. A boost to performance comes courtesy of a 48-volt hybrid system that makes 39lb ft of torque to back up a turbocharged petrol engine with 173lb ft of torque, resulting in a car that feels assured. WLTP combined fuel consumption is lower for the latest model, with 2WD mild hybrid manual transmission models offering up to 9 per cent improvement at 53.2mpg. Full hybrid 2WD models with AGS transmission offer up to 6 per cent improvement at 56.4 mpg. The inteior of the vehicle is well laid-out CO2 emissions are improved too at just 113g/km for the 1.5-litre full hybrid Motion model – previously 119gkm. Manual transmission models include a 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid, while for customers wanting the convenience of automatic a full hybrid option with AGS transmission is available. Unique in the small SUV sector, both manual and AGS drivetrains are available with the option of 4WD, underlining Suzuki's background of producing trusty 4x4s. Full Hybrid technology with 1.5-litre engine was introduced in 2022. The higher-powered Suzuki system consists of a 140V lithium-ion battery and inverter, Motor Generator Unit (known as MGU), a 12V lithium-ion battery as well as a conventional 12V lead-acid battery to power components requiring lower voltage such as lights, instruments and heating / air conditioning. The full Hybrid system has two switchable modes which are Eco and Standard. One switch enables the driver to change between the two modes depending on conditions and also increases the frequency of EV driving. In conclusion, the Vitara remains a very compelling package, offering a pleasant drive, great practicality and an efficient hybrid powertrain.
