2025 John Deere Classic picks: Three long shots to back on PGA Tour this week

The John Deere Classic occupies a really tough spot on the PGA Tour calendar. Not only is it scheduled on a holiday weekend, but it is also sandwiched between the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, it's been difficult to get star players to make the trip to the Quad Cities to play in the John Deere, as most opt to head across the pond early to get ready for the Scottish Open, which is the warmup for the year's final major. This has led to the John Deere Classic boasting arguably the weakest field of any tournament on the PGA Tour calendar. That may sound like bad news for casual golf fans, but it is terrific news for bettors. In most PGA Tour events, you need to beat at least a few elite players to contend, but this tournament is headlined by Ben Griffin (16/1), Jason Day (25/1), Denny McCarthy (28/1), and J.T. Poston (30/1), and it is played on an easy course that won't intimidate any player in this field. Last year's leaderboard featured 16 players who finished 20-under par or better. All of this should level the playing field considerably, which is good news for those of us who like to sprinkle some long shots in the golf each week. 2025 John Deere Classic Picks Max Homa (100/1, FanDuel): In a field like this, it's absolutely worth buying low on talented players who are out of form. Max Homa fits that bill. A six-time winner on the PGA Tour, Homa has endured a nightmare 2025 season, but he has shown some faint signs of life over the last few months. Homa missed five consecutive cuts going into the Masters, where he got off the schneid with a T12 finish. Since then, Homa has made six of eight cuts, and though he hasn't contended for a trophy in that span, we know he has the ceiling to lap this field. Put it this way, if Homa were not in the midst of a horrible year, he would be priced as one of the favorites to win this tournament. Adam Schenk has three top-10 finishes at the John Deere Classic. Getty Images Adam Schenk (150/1, FanDuel): The bet on Homa is about his talent, but the bet on Adam Schenk is about his course history. Schenk has three top-six finishes in his last four trips to the John Deere (not including a withdrawal), so you can excuse his poor form this season and bet on this being the perfect setup for him to pop. Adam Hadwin (220/1, FanDuel): Similar to Homa, Adam Hadwin has more than enough talent to overwhelm this field and course. The reason the Canadian is priced at 220/1 is because he's endured a rough 2025 campaign with just one top-10 finish, two top-25s, and five missed cuts in 18 starts. Hadwin will need to find his form quickly to contend this week, but his ability to get white hot with his putter makes him a good fit on a course that puts a huge emphasis on the short game. French golfer Victor Perez makes history at US Open with rare ace
Victor Perez's time on the notoriously challenging Oakmont golf course Friday proved to be memorable. The French golfer carded a rare ace during second-round competition at the U.S. Open. It was just the second hole-in-one on record in a U.S. Open at Pennsylvania's Oakmont Country Club. Perez aced on the par-3 sixth hole Friday, using a 7-iron to hit the shot from 192 yards. The ball bounced a few times before eventually rolling roughly three feet into the cup. An animated Perez raised his arms before giving his caddie a chest bump. Perez also celebrated with his playing partners, Adam Schenk and Jacob Bridgeman, as spectators applauded. Perez admitted nailing an ace isn't solely based on skill. "Obviously, a hole-in-one takes a little bit of luck," Perez said. "Honestly, I was trying to hit something maybe 15-20 feet past the hole. Maybe it spun a little more and bounced in. I was a little fortunate, which I'll definitely take." According to Perez, it was the ninth ace of his career. He said he made two in the Bahamas — at his home course — but no one could corroborate it because he was playing alone at the time. "They didn't believe me at home because I was playing by myself," Perez said. "Now, they'll know." The last known ace when Oakmont hosted a U.S. Open happened in 1983. Scott Simpson carded an ace that year on the 16th hole in the first round. The ace helped Perez recover from a rough second-round start. He ended the second round in a tie for sixth place at 1-over. Sam Burns ended the day at the top of the leaderboard at 3-under. Burns finished last year's U.S. Open in a tie for ninth place. He's a Midwestern dentist — and he's playing in the U.S. Open
OAKMONT, Pa. — 'Good morning, this is the 11:20 tee time,' the starter announced to the small crowd Wednesday morning. 'Next up we have Emiliano Grillo, Adam Schenk and … Matt Vogt.' There was some polite applause and a small wave from the golfer. Nobody around the first tee at Oakmont Country Club seemed to notice the lack of formalities. Because, ahem, it's actually Dr. Matt Vogt.

Wife of golf star Adam Schenk brings husband back down to earth after he qualified for the US Open
The wife of golfer Adam Schenk joked that she 'died of a heart attack' after seeing the cost of rental homes for next month's US Open. Schenk, the world No 143, has qualified for the third major the year, which takes place at Oakmont in Pennsylvania from June 12 to June 15. More than 10,200 golfers entered the 125th US Open via 100-plus qualifying events, including Charlie Woods and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo. After Schenk secured his place in the field, his wife Kourtney began planning their week at Oakmont, which is just outside Pittsburgh. Golfers and their families typically find homes for the week but houses near Oakmont are being rented out for up to $80,000 for a week. 'Adam just qualified for the US Open & I just died of a heart attack when I saw the rental house prices. Ooook Oakmont,' Kourtney wrote on X, before deleting her post. In his 10 major appearances, Schenk has made the cut just three times, earning $600,000 US Open Rentals Oakmont finds visitors 'high-quality' rental homes near the course. There are still dozens of houses available. Among the cheapest is a three-bed house just a few minutes from Oakmont. It is said to hold four to five guests and it costs $10,000 for the week. Adam and Kourtney Schenk have two young children and a dog. The priciest three-bed available to rent is a staggering $48,000 a week. Those players with bigger entourages face having to fork out even more for a home near Oakmont, with one nine-bedroom house costing $80,000. Schenk has made more nearly $12.5million in his PGA Tour career. But in his 10 major appearances, he has made the cut just three times, earning around $600,000. His best result came at the 2024 Masters, when he finished in a tie for 12th and took home $405,000.
