Farmers' raise concerns over renovation works disrupting cultivation in Thoothukudi
Farmers in Thoothukud district have voiced their concerns during the monthly grievance redress meeting, stating that the ongoing renovation works in water bodies are affecting the crop cultivation, even though water has been released for irrigational activities. The meeting held at the district collectorate was chaired by Thoothukdi Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting, the collector addressed various grievances submitted by the farmers. At the meeting the farmers requested to organise an agricultural exhibition in Thoothukudi district. They also urged the immediate release of funds for crop damage caused by December 2024 floods and compensation for chillies and shallots, which were damaged during the 2023 floods. They noted that Vilathikulam and Sivagnanapuram region farmers still await the compensation. The farmers further highlighted the integrated plan to control weed in rainfed areas. They demanded an increase in the procurement price of milk and to hike the salaries of the milk cooperative society employees. In addition, they called for uninterrupted supply of quality seeds and fertilizers, and urged the withdrawal of requiring a CIBIL score for issuing agricultural loans. A request was also made for the establishment of a storage facility at Melachekkarakudi for storing black gram, green gram and maize. Framers suggested that government-subsidised hybrid coconut saplings, which are said to yield higher income, should be demonstrated on fertile lands with farmers taken for exposure visits. Addressing the grievances Mr. Elambahavath said that agricultural exhibitions are conducted at zonal level. This year, it is scheduled to be held in Tirunelveli, and farmers from Thoothukudi district will be invited to participate. The assessment of the December 2024 flood related crop damage has been completed and a proposal sent to the government, which includes ₹59 crore for agricultural crops, ₹14.6 crore for horticultural crops and compensation for banana crops damaged by gale in the last April. Relief for crop damage during the 2023 floods is still pending and is expected shortly. He added that assessment will be conducted to control weeds in rainfed areas and things such as milk procurement price, reducing rental charges of agricultural equipment are under government policy decisions. If special schemes are introduced, efforts will be made to offer concessions to farmers. The Collector further noted that the delay in water release at some places was due to essential renovation works and has advised the PWD officials to plan such activities. Measures will be taken in the future to prevent such delays and ensure that any infrastructure work disrupt any farming activities. Officials from Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, Horticulture Department, Public Works Department were amongst those present.

AIADMK a weed, should be eradicated: CM Stalin at agri expo
ERODE/TIRUPPUR: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday came down heavily on the AIADMK accusing it of betraying the farmers in all ways and alleging that farmers had to fight for everything under its rule. 'However, that situation has now changed under the DMK regime,' the CM said. He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day agricultural exhibition and conference organised by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department at Vijayamangalam in Erode district. 'Farmer suicides increased during the last AIADMK regime. When farmers protested in Delhi against the now-repealed three contentious central farm laws (2020-21), the AIADMK supported those laws without any shame. That's why farmers defeated that party. Weeds like AIADMK should be completely eradicated from the country,' Stalin said. 'Many more schemes for farmers are going to come under the Dravidian model government, which will come to power again in Tamil Nadu. And for that, all the farmers should support this government. We are not fake farmers who deceive people. We are the first to support farmers in times of trouble,' the CM added. Stalin said he was delighted to meet the farmers of the western region through this event before the release of water from Mettur Dam on Thursday for Cauvery Delta irrigation.

Dindigul lock, Ayakudi Guava, and Kodaikanal Hill Garlic, all made up of flowers, were the highlight of the inaugural day of the 10-day annual summer festival and 62nd flower show at Bryant Park in Kodaikanal on Saturday. The flower show was inaugurated by Dindigul Member of Parliament. R. Sachithanantham and Dindigul Collector S. Saravanan in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary of Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department K. Manivasan, Agricultural Production Commissioner and Secretary to the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department V. Dakshinamoorthy and Director (In-charge) of Horticulture and Plantation Crops B. Murugesh. The opening day of the event witnessed a decent crowd. The authorities said that they expected an increase in the number of visitors in the coming days. The government was organising the summer festival and flower show to showcase the art and culture of Tamil Nadu and the festival would be held till June 1. The people were captivated by over 70,000 flowers that were arranged in various shapes and sizes. Flowers from across the globe were displayed at the event. Flowers were arranged in the shape of peacocks and elephants were carved out of vegetables. There were also messages to create awareness among the tourists to avoid the use of plastic and protect the environment and wildlife Some of flowers on display included Salvia, Delphinium, Ornithogalum, Gazania, Penstemon, Verbena, Coreopsis, Dahlia, Lilium, Antirrhinum, pansy, Marigold, Dianthus, Zinnia, California Poppy, etc. Basic facilities including drinking water and toilet facilities, parking, transportation facilities and other arrangements were made to prevent traffic congestion. People were seen enthusiastically clicking photographs and selfies with the flowers on display. Cultural programmes, art performances and various competitions have been organised as part of the event. The authorities said that they expected around 1.5 lakh tourists to visit the 10-day event.
