Trump-Iran latest: US Secretary of Defense rages at coverage of bombing after ayatollah threatens further attacks

Recap: Iran's Supreme leader vows 'victory' over US and Israel Iran will not hesitate to bomb more US air bases in the Middle East, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned. In his first public appearance since the US attacked Iran's three nuclear facilities on Sunday morning, Khamenei claimed the Islamic Republic had access to 'key US centres' and would take action 'when necessary'. He also claimed Iran had won a victory over Israel and the US, delivering a 'slap to the US's face' by attacking its Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. 'Such an action can be repeated in the future too. Should any aggression occur, the enemy will definitely pay a heavy price,' Khamenei said. Alexander Butler26 June 2025 19:30

Iran targets US military base: Where is Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar?

Iran targeted the U.S. military's largest Middle East air base with a missile attack on Monday, June 23, an apparent response to U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities days earlier. Iran's military claimed June 23 it had carried out a missile attack on the Al Udeid Air Base in the area of Doha, Qatar, located across the Persian Gulf from Iran. Qatar said in a statement shortly after the evening attack that Qatari air defenses successfully intercepted the missile attack and said no casualties have been reported. Live updates: Iran targets US military base in Qatar days after nuclear sites bombed The U.S. Embassy in Qatar issued multiple warnings to personnel in the wake of Israel's June 12 attack on Iran, initially advising Americans to exercise increased caution and discouraged non-essential travel to Al Udeid Air Base. Officials issued restricted access to the base Friday, June 19, ahead of the U.S.-led strikes on Iran Saturday night. The embassy most recently issued an emergency 'shelter in place' Monday for all Americans in the area. The Al Udeid Air Base is nestled in the desert in the Abū Nakẖlah district in Qatar, just outside of the capital Doha. It is approximately 25 miles from Doha's International Airport and from the city's central downtown district. The base is a critical nerve center for American forces and operations in the Middle East from its perch in the central Gulf. It acts as a forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command and Air Forces Central Command. Al Udeid Air Base has played a critical role in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and operations across the region for more than 15 years, its operations covering a huge swath of territory stretching from Egypt in the west to Kazakhstan in the east. The 24-hectare base is a large and self-sustained compound, according to 2023 U.S. military documents detailing the facilities. Alongside its many functional offices and dorms, the complex contains a post office, gym, movie theater, an outdoor food court and a dining hall, a recreational pool and a large gathering plaza used to host outdoor entertainment and social functions. It houses around 10,000 troops, while the entire Middle East has about 40,000 American troops across several countries and bases. The embassy stretches across 12 acres within the Wadi al Banat district of Qatar's capital city. Joint Chiefs chair spotlights 44 heroes who defended US base from Iran missile attack: 'Absolutely crushed it'

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine revealed details of the young skeleton crew who were left to defend Al Udeid Air Base as they faced an incoming barrage of Iranian missiles on Monday. "We believe that this is the largest single Patriot engagement in U.S. military history," Caine said, referring to the U.S. surface-to-air missile defense system. "We were joined in this engagement by the Qatar Patriot cruise." Caine said the 44 soldiers left on base after it was evacuated ranged in age from 21 to 28. They were left with only two Patriot systems to defend the base, which is a major headquarters in the Middle East and home to 10,000 deployed American soldiers. "Imagine you're that young first lieutenant. You're 25 or 26 years old, and you've been assigned as the tactical director inside the command and control element. You, at that age, are the sole person responsible to defend this base," Caine said. He did not say if any of the Iranian missiles got through the Patriot defense systems. The Qataris have claimed one missile penetrated air defenses. "There was a lot of metal flying around. And yet our U.S. air defenders had only seconds to make complex decisions with strategic impact." "Simply stated, they absolutely crushed it," he concluded. Iran launched a missile attack on the Qatari-based U.S. base in response to U.S. attacks on its nuclear facilities. President Donald Trump revealed that Iran had given the U.S. a heads-up on the attack, in an effort to symbolically hit back at the strikes without escalating the situation. Iran used short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles to attack Al-Udeid Air Base, but no casualties were reported. The Al-Udeid base serves as a hub for logistical operations for the U.S. mission to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria. It also hosts Central Command's forward headquarters, as well as its air forces and special operations in the region. It has also been used as a headquarters for British involvement in airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq.
