Image: Reuters The Indian cricket team's tour of Bangladesh in August for the ODI and T20 series is only a little over a month away, but still, there's no clarity on whether it will take place. In the meantime, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCC) president Aminul Islam on Monday revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to confirm the tour. Team India is scheduled to play a three-match ODI and T20I series against Bangladesh, starting from 17 August. The matches will be played at Mirpur and Chattogram. 'I have already spoken to the BCCI. Discussions have been positive,' Aminul said. 'We remain hopeful. It is scheduled [next month] but they are waiting for some decisions from the government.' Also Read | Aminul added that BCCI has also discussed fulfilling the commitment in the next possible window if the tour doesn't go ahead as planned, but no reasons for why the tour may get cancelled were shared. 'The discussions are ongoing. If for some reason they can't come [in August], they will come at the next available window. We are hopeful of playing in this window. I can't say much apart from the fact that they are very professional and cooperative.' If reports from May are to be believed, the BCCI may cancel the tour of Bangladesh due to worsening relations between the two countries , triggered in part by a retired Bangladeshi army official's remark about occupying seven states in Northeast India. After the Phalagam terror attack, Maj Gen (retired) ALM Fazlur Rahman of Bangladesh had warned India against attacking Pakistan and threatened military action in Northeast India. 'If India attacks Pakistan, Bangladesh should occupy the seven states of North-East India. In this regard, I think it is necessary to start a discussion on a joint-military system with China," Rahman said in a Facebook post. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Subsequently, a news report claimed that there's a 'bright possibility' BCCI could cancel the tour to Bangladesh over comments on Northeast India. 'The tour is part of the calendar but nothing is final yet. There is a bright possibility of India not touring Bangladesh for the ODIs and T20Is because of the current situation,' a source told the Times of India.

India's White-Ball Tour Of Bangladesh Still In Doubt, BCB President Gives Major Update

Last Updated: India's tour of Bangladesh for ODIs and T20Is remains uncertain due to ongoing political unrest and discussions between the cricket boards. In what has come as a major update on India's upcoming tour of Bangladesh, where the two nations were supposed to play white-ball games, is still in the doldrums, and a final confirmation is still awaited, with the two concerned boards still in discussion over certain factors. Aminul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, said that the BCCI is waiting for their government's decision on the upcoming white-ball series against Bangladesh. Bangladesh are scheduled to host India for three ODIs and as many T20Is from Sunday, August 17, but that looks doubtful under the present political situation. 'We're having positive discussions with the BCCI. It's not like (hosting India) in August or September, we are having discussions on how we can do the series, and if we cannot host it now, we will do it at another possible time," Aminul told the media on Monday. Bangladesh today commenced the murder trial of student activist Abu Sayeed, whose death during an anti-government protest in 2024 ignited a nationwide movement leading to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime. Sayeed, a 23-year-old student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, was shot dead by police on July 16, 2024, during demonstrations against the then Hasina government. Videos and images of Sayeed, showing him standing with arms outstretched before being shot, were broadcast, fuelling nationwide public outrage. Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal accepted the prosecution's charges against 30 individuals, including the former vice chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Hasibur Rashid, court officials said. The tribunal issued arrest warrants for 26 of the accused, while four, the university's former proctor, two policemen and a leader of the now disbanded Awami League's student front Chhatra League, are already in jail. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam submitted a charge sheet, alleging that Sayeed's killing was part of a systematic crackdown ordered by the then-prime minister and executed by senior police officials. Since then, Bangladesh has been boiling, with continuous protests raging in the country, presumably due to which the Indian government is still pondering sending the team. Two more held in Assam for 'anti-Hindu' posts on social media, says CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that the Assam Police have arrested two more persons for their alleged role in posting objectionable content against Hindu religion on social media platforms. The two persons who have been arrested are identified as Anisur Rehman and Farijul Islam. Rehman was arrested in the Tinsukia district while Islam was nabbed by the police from the Nagaon district. Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma wrote, "Crackdown on Anti-Hindu elements continues. @TinsukiaPolice arrested Md Anisur Rehman for sharing an objectionable content on Hinduism. @nagaonpolice arrested Farijul Islam for a derogatory comment on Lord Ram." "Ninety-seven anti-national and anti-Hindu culprits behind bars now," he added. Among the 97 arrested people, the most prominent is the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam. He was the first person to be arrested in the state for the "pro-Pakistan" stance. Aminul Islam, an AIUDF MLA from Assam's Dhing Assembly constituency, was arrested on May 1 on sedition charges following his provocative statement regarding the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. In a video clip circulated on social media, the AIUDF leader is heard claiming that the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks were part of a "government conspiracy". Aminul Islam said, "Six years ago in Pulwama, when the RDX blast happened and 42 soldiers died, I said on that day that the Pulwama blast happened at the behest of a conspiracy of the Central government, and it was a conspiracy to win the 2019 Lok Sabha polls." He added that what happened in Pahalgam is that the "BJP has been peddling that the terrorists asked about religion and opened fire only on Hindus, and they let go of Muslims". "But the victims said that the terrorists opened fire without asking about anybody's name, and I doubt that the nexus which was involved in the Pulwama attack in which RDX was used, is behind the Pahalgam incident," he said. "If the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government does not conduct a fair investigation into the incident and tries to bring a division between Hindus and Muslims, I would believe that this incident happened because of a conspiracy," he added. However, the AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced himself from his party legislator's comments. Ajmal said, "AIUDF stands with the government. The terrorists have no religion, and those who spread terrorism are against Islam."
