TAWAU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has dismissed speculation that component parties within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition will inevitably clash during the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN). Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, expressed confidence that such a scenario is unlikely, given the strong commitment and cooperation among the component parties within GRS and its ally, Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Advertisement 'We've seen the state government under the GRS-PH administration deliver many positive results in terms of Sabah's progress and development, including protecting the welfare of the people,' he said during a visit to Kampung Kinabutan Bukit here on Sunday. 'I believe there will be no clashes among GRS component parties and no conflict with PH either,' he added. When asked about the potential of a clash between GRS and Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly Umno, in the upcoming election, Nizam said it would be up to BN to decide. The Apas assemblyman stressed that GRS's main focus is on strengthening the current unity government, which centres on cooperation, understanding, and mutual trust between GRS and PH. He revealed that this intention has already been informally communicated to the PH leadership in Sabah and to the Prime Minister, while also affirming that PGRS does not deny other parties the right to explore collaboration. 'Today's state government is formed through cooperation between GRS and PH, so naturally, our priority is to ensure the next government remains within that framework,' he said. Commenting further, Nizam said any party seeking to collaborate must understand that the priority for forming partnerships will lie with GRS and PH. As PGRS Zone 12 Coordinator (covering Tawau and Kalabakan divisions), Nizam also confirmed that the party has submitted the names of its potential candidates for the state election. 'We've requested all seven seats—Apas, Balung and Sri Tanjung under Tawau; and Merotai, Sebatik, Tanjung Batu, and Kukusan under Kalabakan. 'Ultimately, the decision lies with the PGRS leadership, but certainly, we aim to defend the three seats we currently hold—Apas, Balung, and Sebatik,' he said. On May 11, Prime Minister and PH Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when met in Tawau, expressed optimism that a collaboration between PH, BN, and GRS could be established to face the 17th state election. However, he clarified that he could only speak on behalf of PH and would leave further discussions on the tripartite collaboration to BN and GRS. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kampung Iban Merotai land approval not election gimmick
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: TAWAU: The declaration of reserve land for Kampung Iban Merotai is not a political promise, but a long-overdue move approved even before the upcoming state election, said Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah. Speaking at the Gawai Day celebration in the village yesterday, the Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President stressed that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government, led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, had delivered on a 50-year wait within just three months. 'This isn't an empty promise. After 50 years, the villagers finally received legal land approval. This is a legacy they can pass on for generations,' Liew said. He urged villagers to support the government in the coming polls and dismissed claims that the land approval was an election ploy. 'The land now belongs to the people of Kampung Iban, permanently. Don't be swayed by political slander,' he added, promising to upgrade the village hall into a multipurpose centre if given the mandate. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PBS honours 13 loyal members in Kota Belud
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: KOTA BELUD: Thirteen long-time Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) members, loyal since 1985, were honoured at a brief ceremony during the launch of the Tambulion polling district machinery in Kampung Sorob. The members, identified by the local committee, received certificates and T-shirts presented by PBS Kadamaian Chief Demis Rumanti. Among them were Michael Tinggiu, Cowboy Mialah, and Raisah Latip. PBS Deputy Chief for Kadamaian, Walter Kandayon, said the recognition was to honour members who remained steadfast through political turbulence. 'They are the party's most valuable asset. Loyal, unwavering, and not motivated by rewards,' he said, noting loyalty as a foundation of PBS's strength since 1985. Michael Tinggiu said they remained loyal because PBS is multiracial and consistently defends Sabah's rights. 'We stayed even after PBS fell in 1994 due to betrayal by some assemblymen,' he said. The event aimed to inspire younger members and called for more formal recognition programs in future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PBS denies forming new bloc with STAR, says alliance is to boost GRS unity before state election
KOTA KINABALU, June 29 — The collaboration between Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) should not be misconstrued as the formation of a new political bloc but instead seen as an effort to solidify the existing Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), said PBS information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. Joniston emphasised to reporters on Saturday that the upcoming PBS-STAR grassroots convention scheduled to be held on July 12 serves as a platform to reinforce cooperation between the two local parties as Sabah heads towards the next state election. 'It's important for us to have this convention because we want members and grassroots leaders from both parties to come together and further enhance our existing good understanding and cooperation,' he said when asked about the issue after the launching ceremony of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) Conference and Expo 2025. Joniston pointed out that the collaboration was rooted in strengthening the cohesiveness between PBS and STAR, extending beyond party leadership to their grassroots machinery. 'This is all geared towards further strengthening Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. When PBS and STAR are strong, it ensures a stronger GRS as well.' He further reiterated that contesting under the GRS banner is a priority for PBS leadership, reflecting the coalition's collective commitment to retain the state government. 'Our leadership has more or less implied that it's important for us to contest as GRS candidates. That will further underscore GRS's seriousness in forming the next government,' he added. Responding to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's recent remarks that Umno never invited PBS to work together, Joniston clarified that PBS never claimed to have received such an invitation. 'That statement was made in the context of what Zahid Hamidi (Umno president) said that the door to work with GRS is not closed. Bung echoed that sentiment. So our position is clear, GRS, made up of eight component parties, must continue strengthening itself and exploring cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, which is currently part of the state government under GRS Plus,' he said, adding that while some Umno assemblymen are part of the current State Cabinet, Barisan Nasional (BN) as a whole is not officially part of the government. 'BN is not part of it. What we have are individual Umno representatives aligned with the state government.' Joniston also took aim at what he described as Umno's inconsistent stance regarding cooperation with GRS. 'Bung has said many times that they will never work with GRS, but then there's flip-flopping. One day it's a firm no, the next day, they say they might consider it. As far as PBS is concerned, the chief minister and GRS chairman is firm, and any decision will be a collective one made with input from all component parties,' he said. He reiterated PBS's long-held position, if Umno and BN have no intention of working with GRS, then PBS sees no reason to pursue that route either. — The Borneo Post
