Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary: Release Date, Cast, Plot and Everything to Know About Sci-Fi Epic

Amazon MGM Studios is bringing Andy Weir's bestselling sci-fi novel Project Hail Mary to the big screen, with Ryan Gosling leading the cast. The movie is set to hit theaters nationwide on March 20, 2026. In Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who becomes an unlikely astronaut. As Earth faces extinction because the sun and other stars are dying, Grace is sent on a solo mission to find answers in deep space, as per USA Today. 'I put the not in astronaut,' Gosling's character jokes in the trailer released on June 30. 'I've never done anything. I've never done a space walk. I can't even moonwalk.' A story of friendship and survival On his mission, Grace befriends an alien he names Rocky. Gosling adds humor in the trailer, saying, 'So I met an alien. He's kind of growing on me. At least he's not growing IN me. Which was a concern for a little while.' The plot follows Grace as he wakes up on the spaceship Hail Mary, with no memory of his mission. As he remembers why he's there, he tries to stop the mysterious force draining the sun's energy. 'It's an insanely ambitious story, expansive in scope,' Gosling said at CinemaCon in April. 'Literally, we tried to put it on a TV once. It didn't fit.' Who's joining Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary? The film has an impressive cast. Joining Gosling are Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Industry), Liz Kingsman, James Ortiz, James Wright, and Robert James Smith. The movie is directed by Oscar winners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, The Spider-Verse Franchise) and adapted by Drew Goddard, who also wrote The Martian screenplay. Here's how Project Hail Mary connects to The Martian Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel. Weir's earlier book, The Martian, became a hit movie starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott. Like The Martian, Project Hail Mary mixes hard science with humor and suspense. Fans might spot similarities to films like Sunshine and Netflix's Spaceman too. Gosling previously starred in First Man as astronaut Neil Armstrong, so he's no stranger to space movies.

New trailer for 'Project Hail Mary' gives first look at Ryan Gosling in space

A first look at 'Project Hail Mary,' the upcoming science fiction thriller starring Ryan Gosling, captures how a middle school teacher is suddenly tasked with saving the world — from space. Based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name, 'Project Hail Mary' centers around Ryland Grace's mission to space after a mysterious astronomical phenomenon threatens the existence of humanity. In a trailer for the film, which premiered exclusively on "TODAY" June 30, Gosling is pictured with long hair and a beard, shouting, 'I just woke up from a coma.' 'And I'm not an astronaut,' he repeats several times — until the next scene shows him echoing the same sentiment well before his fateful mission. The trailer explains that the sun is dying, and Ryland, a former scientist turned middle school teacher, might be the government's only hope in understanding why. The mission is called Project Hail Mary, given Ryland's 'long shot' at surviving it. With his background in molecular biology, Ryland is dubbed the Earth's only hope. The thrilling trailer, featuring Harry Styles' 'Sign of the Times,' sees Ryland struggle to survive in space light-years away from Earth. And as he works to communicate his findings to his team, he may encounter a few aliens along the way. 'Project Hail Mary' will also feature Sandra Hüller, known for 2023's 'The Zone of Interest' and 'Anatomy of a Fall.' The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, while the film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The movie will be released in theaters and in IMAX on March 20, 2026. Weir also wrote 'The Martian,' which was adapted into a 2015 film, starring Matt Damon.

"It's 11.9 light-years away. The astronauts ... die in space?" Ryland asks. "It's what you Americans would call a long shot," says his superior, Eva Stratt ( Sandra Hüller ), to which Ryland responds, "Hail Mary. I get it." While discussing the mission, Ryland stresses that he has no experience with space despite his doctorate in molecular biology, saying, "I put the 'not' in 'astronaut!' The Project Hail Mary trailer has dropped. It's perfect

Fans will have to wait until March 20, 2026 to see the final product, but the first trailer for Project Hail Mary dropped on Monday on the TODAY show. Based on the book written by Andy Weir -- who also authored The Martian -- Project Hail Mary is a story of survival, humanity and friendship as middle school science teacher Ryland Grace goes on an adventure he never could have expected. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Into the Spider-Verse) are at the helm as directors for the project. Ryan Gosling stars as Grace, who opens the trailer waking up from a coma and finding himself in outer space. Over the course of the trailer, we find out that Grace has to go on a mission in an attempt to find out why the sun (and all the stars in the solar system) are dying. Check out the full trailer here: It's just shy of three minutes of perfection, utilizing Harry Styles' song "Sign of the Times" as Eva (played by Anatomy of a Fall's Sandra Hüller) tries to convince Grace he's the only man for the job. The trailer also breaks down Project Hail Mary's relatively complicated plot well, explaining that if they can't complete this mission, the entire world will die. Oh, and we get our first glimpse of Rocky, the alien Grace meets on his journey. All-in-all, lovers of the book should be excited based on what we've seen so far. "I'm several light years from my apartment," Gosling says to open the clip. "And I'm not an astronaut." March 2026 can't get here fast enough.
