RTC staff threaten stir over privatisation of Vijayawada depot lands

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APPTD) Employees Union on Monday issued a stern warning to the state government, vowing to intensify its agitation if the Governorpet 1 & 2 RTC depots in Vijayawada are relocated to facilitate a Lulu shopping mall project. In a press release issued here, the EU announced that the state government, on Sunday, approved the handover of approximately 4.15 acres of prime land to the Lulu Group for the construction of a shopping mall. This allocated land reportedly includes not only the Governorpet 1 & 2 depots but also the Old Bus Stand and even a municipal park developed during the previous TDP regime. The union alleges that this valuable public land, estimated to be worth hundreds of crores of rupees, has been earmarked for the Lulu Mall, a move they argue will displace essential public transport infrastructure and adversely affect thousands of daily commuters. 'This decision is not in the public interest. It moves RTC depots away from the city's center and hands over valuable public land to private entities,' stated Palisetti Damodara Rao, State president of the APPTD Employees Union. In response to the government's decision, the union has announced a teleconference with its state-level leadership for July 29. Following this, a detailed agitation plan will be declared on July 30, according to Damodara Rao. The union has demanded the immediate withdrawal of G.O. Ms. No. 137 and has vowed to escalate protests if the government proceeds with the proposed land transfer. 'We are not against development, but not at the cost of public transport and public assets,' added GV Narasaiah, State General Secretary of the Employees Union. 'We urge the government to reconsider its decision and protect the RTC properties that serve lakhs of RTC passengers.'

Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (AP PTD) Employees' Union on Friday urged the State government to approve recruitment of 10,000 staff and purchase 3,000 new buses for smooth implementation of the promised free bus travel scheme for women from August 15 in the State. Speaking at a dharna organised at Pandit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada as part of a State-wide protest, the Union's State president P. Damodar Rao raised concern over the 'inordinate delay' in implementing promotions of the employees. He said 3,000 RTC employees were eagerly waiting for promotions for the last six years and urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to approve the same. He also urged the government to appoint 12th Pay Revision Commission and announce Interim Relief for the employees. The Union's zonal secretary Y. Srinivasa Rao said that the electric buses proposed to be procured by the government should be operated by the AP PTD staff. He also asked the government to release the pending 24 months arrears under the 11th PRC and arrears of DA. The Union's State secretary T.V. Bhavani demanded immediate payment of gratuity and leave encashment for the retired and deceased employees of the department and also revival of the medical facilities through referral hospitals, as was provided prior to the merger of the APSRTC with the government. Public transport wing employees union to stage protests on July 4, 5

Leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (AP PTD) Employees Union on Monday announced their decision to stage a State-wide protests on July 4 and 5, in support of their demand for promotions to lower-level employees. In a statement, the union's State president P. Damodar Rao and general secretary G. V. Narasayya said: 'On July 4 and 5, employees across 129 depots and four workshops will participate in lunch-hour gate meetings and dharnas, wearing red badges, during duty hours.' The merger of the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) with the government in 2020 had raised their hopes for a fair deal, but over the last six years the employees continue to wait for promotions. They said that many eligible employees had retired without promotions and several attempts by the union to draw the government's attention to the issue failed to yield any result. The union leaders also demanded payment of arrears of 24 months related to the 11th PRC, clearance of the pending DA arrears and raised 30 other long-standing issues demanding their immediate resolution.
