Gilas Pilipinas begins FIBA Asia Cup build-up, but Cone not expecting full attendance yet
Gilas Pilipinas will hit the ground running in its preparation for the upcoming 2025 FIBA Asia Cup with head coach Tim Cone convening the national team starting today at the Upper Deck in Pasig. But the multi-titled tactician isn't expecting to have a full attendance on the first day of practice, especially since most of the players are either not in the country yet or are still suiting up for their mother teams in the ongoing PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. The Monday practice will mark the national team's first meeting one month before the Asia Cup slated on August 5 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. "It's not going to be a heavy, long practice, obviously. I'm not even sure if everybody is going to show up, especially the guys in the playoffs," Cone said on Sunday after steering Barangay Ginebra to a Game 6 win over San Miguel in the semifinals. "We got a Game 7 on Wednesday so asking the guys to come to practice is kind of hard." Most of the members of the Gilas pool are currently in the PBA playoffs with Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, and Jamie Malonzo playing for Cone's Gin Kings, who dragged the San Miguel Beermen to a do-or-die Game 7 on Wednesday. The Beermen, meanwhile, also have active Gilas players in June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez. National team gunner Calvin Oftana is also still with a TNT tem that had already clinched a ticket to the finals to keep its bid for a Grand Slam alive. Meanwhile, several other players are still overseas. Justin Brownlee and AJ Edu expected to arrive soon from the United States while Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo are currently in the US and South Korea, respectively. "Like I said, I don't even know who's showing up at this point. We're grasping at straws just like we did tonight in terms of trying to figure out how to get practices," Cone added. "But if we can get a core of six or seven or eight guys, that would be good for now." Gilas is in Group D of the Asia Cup alongside New Zealand, Iraq, and Chinese Taipei. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

LA Tenorio drills game-winner for Barangay Ginebra, forces Game 7 in semis vs SMB
LA Tenorio drilled the game-winning triple to save Barangay Ginebra against San Miguel, 88-87, in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. With the win, Barangay Ginebra forced a do-or-die match on Wednesday. The Gin Kings were trailing by just two points with 10 seconds left but they turned to veteran Tenorio for their final attempt. CJ Perez tried to make one from the 4-point arc but it fell short, handing the victory to the Never Say Die squad. Tenorio only had 9:40 minutes of play, seven of which were in the fourth quarter alone, but he had 11 points built on three triples including the final one which sealed the win for Barangay Ginebra. "Miracles do happen," Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone said. "We were grasping for straws out there all game long, trying to find a way to continue to defend June Mar [Fajardo] with Japeth [Aguilar] cramping most of the game and we turned to our veteran, our leader and he made the big plays down the stretch, something we haven't been able to do in the series, but just LA's presence out there allowed us to make big plays down the stretch." Cone, however, emphasized that it was not just one big shot. "It was plays before that kept us in the game," Cone added. San Miguel was leading 78-71 early in the fourth period but after Tenorio subbed in for RJ Abarrientos, he immediately made impact with a triple to answer Rodney Brondial's layup and put Ginebra closer, 74-80. Perez followed it up with a basket but Tenorio made one anew to put Ginebra within six again. Ginebra caught up with the Beermen until a trey from Tenorio tied the game at 83 with 3:53 remaining in the fourth period. This was followed by a Troy Rosario layup before a Jamie Malonzo foul on Fajardo put the latter on the line where he split his freebies. San Miguel reclaimed the lead after a Perez layup with 1:01 left before a split from Fajardo off a Scottie Thompson foul handed San Miguel the 87-85 lead. The Tenorio triple then happened. "Every time I step on the court, I really try to make something happen. As a leader of the team, matagal na taon na, I really need to be on point on everything that I do. It doesn't matter if it's two minutes or one minute, I have to be a role model," Tenorio said. Aside from Tenorio, Thompson also had an impressive game with 17 points and 16 rebounds, to go with eight assists and a steal, while Japeth Aguilar had 16 points. RJ Abarrientos, meanwhile, had 12 points, seven assists, three boards, and a block, while Stephen Holt and Troy Rosario also had 12 points each. The win spoiled Fajardo's 21-point, 16-rebound outing for the Beermen, as Perez, Trollano, and Brondial were the only other double-digit scorers for San Miguel with 15, 13, and 12 points, respectively. Scores: Ginebra 88 – Thompson 17, 16, Holt 12, Abarrientos 12, Rosario 12, Tenorio 11, Ahanmisi 2, David 2, 2, Malonzo 2, Cu 0. Stephen Holt's lone field goal lifts Ginebra to 18-point comeback vs. SMB in semis
Stephen Holt struggled the entire game, but came through when it mattered most to help Barangay Ginebra eke out a 73–71 comeback win over San Miguel in Game 1 of the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup semifinals on Wednesday. The veteran guard buried a clutch triple — his first and lone field goal of the match — to give the Gin Kings a 70-69 lead late in the fourth after being down by as much as 18 points in the first half. CJ Perez then continued his brilliance by completing a layup to regain a San Miguel lead, before Troy Rosario calmly sank a pair of free throws for another one-point Ginebra lead, 72-71, with 1:21 left in the game. San Miguel had an opportunity to make another desperate comeback after Jamie Malonzo missed two charities but Perez could not secure the rebound. Holt then sealed it with a split from the stripe as Ginebra drew first blood in the best-of-seven series. "We saw that June Mar [Fajardo] was getting treatment on the sidelines, we took advantage of the time that he was absent on the floor to get back in the game," Ginebra head coach Tim Cone said. "When he's on the floor, it's really tough and the good news is we just battled tonight. We didn't play great, we didn't shoot great, we didn't really defend that great." Japeth Aguilar was also huge for Ginebra, scoring seven points as part of a 15-5 run that allowed Ginebra to turn a 55-41 deficit to just 60-56 advantage heading to the payoff period. The seasoned big man then came up big early in the fourth, knocking down two layups to further cut the gap to 69-67 before Holt took over to seal the win. Aguilar top-scored with 18 points alongside nine rebounds, two assists, and a block while Scottie Thompson and Malonzo chipped in 16 and 14 markers apiece. Holt, who was limited to 1-of-6 from the field, finished with four important points together with seven rebounds, and four dimes. Scores: Barangay Ginebra 73 – J. Aguilar 18, Thompson 16, Malonzo 14, Rosario 7, 6, Holt 4, Abarrientos 2, Pinto 2, Gray 2, Adamos 2, Ahanmisi 0, David 0.
