How Bailey Zimmerman, BigXthaPlug created CMA Fest's top crossover moment

On the closing night of CMA Fest 2025, Bailey Zimmerman welcomed BigXthaPlug to the stage with him to perform their song "All The Way." The 27-year-old Dallas rapper, born Xavier Landum, rapped alongside the 25-year-old country singer, who is best known for songs "Rock and a Hard Place" and "Religiously." Zimmerman and BigX joined Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan for the bill on the festival's fourth night at Nashville's Nissan Stadium. Their performance is also part of ABC's three-hour TV special airing on June 26. CMA Fest 2025 on ABC: How to watch, stream special hosted by Ashley McBryde and Cody Johnson The crowd burst into applause when Zimmerman called BigX out to perform their genre-blending collaboration, which released in April as the lead single from BigX's upcoming EP. "All The Way" brings together elements of pop-country and hip-hop, partnering trap beats with twangy choruses on the heartbreak tune. "Don't let me down easy, if you're gonna leave me / Baby, go and leave me all the way," Zimmerman sings. "Said you'd try and hold on 'cause the love was so strong, now I'm standing alone this kitchen / Singin' sad songs, but I'm knowin' that this s*** don't last long," BigX raps. "If you leavin', then leave 'cause your bags gone / But just know, you can never come back home." The tune marks another successful country-hip-hop crossover in an increasingly genre-bending musical landscape. Other artists who have paved the way by marrying the two genres include Morgan Wallen, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Nelly, and Lil Nas X. CMA Fest 2026 will be held from June 4-7, 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee. The four-night stadium passes went on sale June 26 at 10 a.m. CT via Ticketmaster. ‘A Shared Language': Inside Country Music's Rap Revival

It's no coincidence that the two songs tied for most weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 toe the line between country and rap. Lil Nas X set the record with his Billy Ray Cyrus-featuring 'Old Town Road' in 2019, and late last year, Shaboozey tied the record when 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' hit the same 19-week mark. 'Country and rap might come from different worlds, but they thrive on the same foundation — raw storytelling and authenticity,' UnitedMasters director of A&R Aaron Hunter says. This year has brought an even bigger boom of successful crossovers between the genres. Post Malone's Big Ass Stadium Tour with Jelly Roll — two artists with roots in hip-hop now making country music — has so far featured special guests including Eminem and Quavo. Dallas rapper BigXthaPlug teamed with Bailey Zimmerman for 'All the Way,' a top five hit on the Hot 100, while ERNEST and Snoop Dogg released their country collaboration, 'Gettin' Gone.' On the festival front, the country-heavy Stagecoach was more rap-inclusive in 2025, with Nelly and T-Pain playing to major audiences. Meanwhile, Morgan Wallen's Sand in My Boots Festival had Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz and Three 6 Mafia onstage. 'Both genres share the same theme of heartbreak, life stories and struggle, whether it's rural life or urban hustle, and that grit creates a natural connection,' Hunter says. He also points to the rising use of trap drums and 808s in country and rap, which has 'blurred lines, making collaborations feel less forced and more like a shared language.' BigXthaPlug will follow the success of 'All the Way' with a country-trap project this summer that will include guest appearances from Jelly Roll, Post Malone and Shaboozey. Even though the Dallas native never listened to country music growing up, he has felt a warm welcome from the Nashville community. 'My fan base is the country world's fan base,' he says. 'They was messing with me, [but] now it's a full acceptance.' This story appears in the May 31, 2025, issue of Billboard. Lil Wayne's ‘Tha Carter VI' album and tour mark a major return for the Hip Hop icon

Key Takeaways: Trending 13 BET Awards tribute performances that still give viewers chills 21 of the sexiest women alive, from Hip Hop to Hollywood 7 athletes whose style screams rap star energy Lil Wayne's new album, Tha Carter VI, blends multiple genres with features from Bono, Wyclef Jean and his own children. The 2025 'Carter VI Tour' spans 34 North American cities, kicking off with Weezy's first solo headlining show at Madison Square Garden. Despite skipping New Orleans, Wayne's team hints at a special Lil Weezyana Fest appearance to honor his hometown roots. After a seven-year wait, Lil Wayne has officially released Tha Carter VI, a 19-track project that both extends and redefines his legendary Carter series. The album arrived on Friday (June 6), the same day Wayne will take the stage at Madison Square Garden for his first-ever solo headlining performance at the iconic venue. Wayne's latest work blends old-school flair and forward-thinking experimentation. The album features an array of unexpected collaborators, including BigXthaPlug, Wyclef Jean, Andrea Bocelli, Kodak Black, 2 Chainz, MGK and two of Wayne's children. The project moves between trap, soul, rock, opera and gospel influences with confidence, reflecting a decades-long career marked by reinvention and range. 'This album is for the ones who've been riding with me through all Tha Carters. We takin' it further than ever before with this one,' Wayne said in a press release. 'C6 is here. I'm just bein' myself. Sorry for the wait.' Throughout Tha Carter VI, Lil Wayne leans into his status as a rap elder without losing the hunger that's kept him relevant. Standouts like 'Written History,' which closes the album with a powerful Muhammad Ali sample, and 'Bein Myself,' a collaboration with Mannie Fresh, reaffirm his lyrical sharpness and unshakable identity. Elsewhere, he showcases a willingness to evolve, pairing with U2's Bono and Jelly Roll on 'The Days' and 'Sharks,' respectively, or crossing into (familiar) rock territory on 'If I Played Guitar.' Wayne even reflects on his traumas, particularly on 'Maria,' where he raps about childhood abuse and his infamous self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 12. These moments provide rare glimpses behind the tattoos and shades. And despite the wide range of features, C6 remains centered on Wayne's voice, creativity and vulnerability. Much like the album, the 'Tha Carter VI Tour' looks to kick off with high energy (beginning with his aforementioned MSG show) and features over 30 dates across North America. Tyga, NoCap and Belly Gang Kushington will also provide support on select stops. Notably absent, however, is Wayne's hometown of New Orleans — something that's sparked social media speculation given his absence from the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. Still, fans in the Crescent City may not be left out for long. Wayne's team has teased 'something special' for the next Lil Weezyana Fest, hinting that a more personal celebration is on the horizon. In the meantime, fans can get their fix through Wayne's online store, which features Tha Carter VI merch, vinyl bundles and more.
