LIV Golf player says late flight, fire alarm contributed to his DQ from Open Qualifier

With the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland just two weeks away, the R&A staged four qualifiers, each advancing the top five to the championship. Burnham & Berrow, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire in England, as well as Dundonald Links in Scotland were the host venues. The R&A reported that 288 golfers were spread across the four courses. LIV Golf's Sam Horsfield was one of more than a dozen players from the fledgling circuit who flew back from a LIV event in Dallas and attempted to qualify. Horsfield's shot came at West Lancashire, where five players would receive a berth in the tournament after a grueling 36 holes of play. And while another LIV Golf member, Lucas Herbert, finished with the low score and a spot in the major, Horsfield left the event after just nine holes with a 43 on his scorecard. He also didn't alert anyone to the decision, meaning he was disqualified from the event. How come? On Tuesday, Horsfield took to social media to plead his case, saying in an Instagram story that he was "completely dizzy and out of it all day." Horsfield said a fire alarm forced him out of bed and he slept through an alarm, although he was fortunate that his caddie woke him up. In 2021, the Manchester, England, native made the cut and finished 67th, but he missed the cut in his other two appearances (2022, 2024).

Who advanced (and who didn't) out of final qualifying for the 2025 British Open

The U.S. Open has Golf's Longest Day, the nickname given to the 36-hole marathon final qualifiers. The British Open also has a day of final qualifiers. Ahead of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, the R&A staged four qualifiers, each advancing the top five to the championship. Burnham & Berrow, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire in England as well as Dundonald Links in Scotland were the host venues. The R&A reported that 288 golfers were spread across the four courses. Who advanced out of final qualifying for the 2025 Open Championship? Lee Westwood won this qualifier at 7 under (70-67) to earn his first British Open spot since 2022. In fact, that was the last PGA Tour major he's played in. In that time, he's only played two seniors majors. Conner Graham (a) and Paul O'Hara tied for fifth at 4 under and faced off in a sudden-death, 2-for-1 playoff for the final spot with the amateur Graham coming out on top. Among the notables who did not advance: Adrian Meronk and Callum Tarren (who both withdrew). Another LIV golfer won this qualifier, with Lucas Herbert finishing 8 under (69-67), a shot better than the field. This qualifier also had a playoff, a 4-for-2 between Richard Teder (a), Oliver Lindell, Ronan Mullarney and Sam Bairstow. Teder and Lindell were the lucky golfers to advance from that playoff. Among the notables who did not advance: Tommy Morrison (a), Harold Varner III, Andy Ogletree, Harrison Crowe, Alex Fitzpatrick and Sam Horsfield. South Africa's Justin Walters finished in first at 9 under. PGA Tour winner Harry Hall was tied for second, a shot back. Among the notables who did not advance: Anirban Lahiri, Caleb Surrat. A third LIV golfer, Dean Murmester, won this qualifier. He did so by four shots at 10 under (70-64), shooting a second 18 holes that was six shots better than his first. All three LIV golfers who advanced did so after winning their qualifier. Among the notables who did not advance: David Puig (who opened with a 64 but then shot 78), Erik van Rooyen, Ian Poulter, Luke Poulter (a), Graeme McDowell, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. Four amateurs advanced to 2025 British Open There was one amateurfrom each of the four qualifiers who advanced: They are Sebastian Cave, Frazer Jones, Connor Graham and Richard Teder, who became the first golfer from Estonia to make it to the British Open.

These are some of the notable names entered in final qualifying for 2025 British Open

Final qualifying for the 2025 British Open is set for Tuesday, July 1, at four golf courses in the United Kingdom. The R&A has released the list of 288 names who will battle it out for 20 spots at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, July 17-20. Each of the four qualifying sites will advance five players after 36 holes to the final men's major of the season. Burnham & Berrow, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire in England as well as Dundonald Links in Scotland are the host venues. Notable names in final qualifying for 2025 British Open Harry Hall, Erik van Rooyen, Alex Noren, Danny Willett and Eugenio Chacarra are among the notable names entered for Tuesday's final qualifier. Earlier this season, van Rooyen survived final qualifying to make the U.S. Open field. There are 20 Americans who are entered, including Kyle Westmoreland, who is competing in this week's Korn Ferry Tour stop in Springfield, Illinois. If he makes the cut there, it'll be a tight turnaround from Sunday's final round to Tuesday's final qualifier. In addition, there are 11 LIV golfers entered in final qualifying, including Ian Poulter, whose son Luke is in the same qualifier at Royal Cinque Ports. There are also 23 amateurs who will take their shot at making the Open field. After July 1, the final chance for golfers to get into the field at Royal Portrush is for the top three finishers, if not already qualified, at the Genesis Scottish Open, July 10-13.
