CMRS begins inspection of Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line, inauguration likely in August
The much-awaited Yellow Line of Bengaluru's Namma Metro moved a step closer to operations with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) commencing inspection of the 19.15-km Reach-5 stretch between RV Road and Bommasandra on Tuesday. The fully elevated corridor, which features 16 stations, has faced multiple delays and was initially slated for completion in December 2021. According to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), further inspections — including those at the operations control centre — are scheduled for July 25. The CMRS is expected to examine key infrastructure including the tracks, viaducts, station structures, signalling and telecommunication systems, and other subsystems. Once CMRS approval is secured and BMRCL complies with the conditions laid out, the Yellow Line will be opened to the public following final consultation with the Union and State Governments. BMRCL is reportedly planning a high-profile inauguration event in August, with officials preparing to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to open the line. A private firm has reportedly been engaged to produce a documentary film showcasing the new corridor, including drone footage of the stations and route, for the inaugural programme. The event is tentatively scheduled for the first or second week of August. Sources indicated that the PM is also expected to inaugurate the Green Line extension from Nagasandra to Madavara at the same event. The Yellow Line will connect key locations in southern Bengaluru, including RV Road, Ragigudda, Jayadeva, and BTM Layout to Electronics City, and further up to Bommasandra, which houses major manufacturing and biotech firms. The Green Line extension will include the Majunathanagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara stations. In the run-up to the inspection and depending on readiness, BMRCL has drawn up three possible operational plans. The first involves opening the entire 16-station stretch with three trains at a frequency of 24 minutes. The second plan proposes partial operation between RV Road and Bommasandra with a limited number of seven stations. The third option is to run services between Bommasandra and Central Silk Board alone. The Yellow Line has suffered significant delays, primarily due to disruptions in the supply of metro coaches. CRRC, the Chinese firm originally contracted to supply the rolling stock, failed to meet the 75 per cent local manufacturing requirement mandated by the Make in India policy. The issue was exacerbated by the India-China border standoff in June 2020, complications with foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, and Covid-related disruptions. To resolve the impasse, CRRC partnered with Titagarh Rail Systems in Kolkata to manufacture and deliver the coaches domestically. However, visa delays for Chinese engineers and the late arrival of propulsion systems from Japan further slowed down the testing and commissioning of the corridor.

Safety inspection of Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line starts today
Bengaluru: The safety inspection of the Yellow Line by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) will begin Tuesday, and is expected to continue for four days. CMRS inspection is a statutory requirement, and the line can be opened to the public only after receiving the necessary approval. Bengalureans have long been awaiting the opening of the 18.8km line from RV Road to Bommasandra, which connects Electronics City — one of the city's major IT corridors. Due to the non-availability of the required number of coaches, BMRCL postponed the launch several times. Recently, BMRCL management set Aug 15 as the new deadline to open the line. A senior BMRCL official said CMRS of the southern region, AM Chowdhary, and his team will inspect the line starting Tuesday. "As this is a new line, the inspection may go on for four days. CMRS inspection is a crucial step towards opening the line. We'll announce the opening date based on the outcome of the safety inspection." Preparations begin for Yellow Line inauguration, speculation over PM Modi's participation
Preparations are underway for the inauguration of Bengaluru's much-delayed Yellow Line Metro, though officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) clarified that no formal confirmation has yet been received regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the event. As speculation grows over the possibility of the Prime Minister inaugurating the new corridor, BMRCL officials said that both the Central and State governments have been informed of the event. 'Nothing has been finalised at this stage,' a senior official said, while confirming that work related to the inauguration protocol has already begun. BMRCL has roped in a private production firm to create a promotional video highlighting the 19-kilometre stretch, which will include footage of metro stations, aerial drone shots, and key features of the line. This documentary-style film is expected to be showcased at the inauguration, tentatively scheduled for the second week of August 2025. Officials confirmed that each station along the Yellow Line has been asked to designate a nodal officer to coordinate with the production crew during the shoot. The Yellow Line, connecting R.V. Road in South Bengaluru to Bommasandra via crucial junctions such as Central Silk Board and Electronics City, was originally set to open in 2021. However, the project has been missing deadlines multiple times, most recently missing a revised launch target of June 2025. CMRS inspection Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) is scheduled to conduct inspections of the Yellow Line from July 22 to July 25. This inspection is a statutory requirement and involves rigorous assessment of the tracks, fire safety protocols, entry and exit points, and the operational readiness of the driverless train sets. Although the physical infrastructure has been in place for some time, operational delays have largely been due to setbacks in receiving the train sets. Initially, in 2019, Chinese company CRRC was awarded a ₹1,578-crore contract to supply 216 coaches with a mandate to build a manufacturing facility in India, something the firm failed to deliver on. This non-compliance caused a substantial slowdown in the project's progress, prompting BMRCL to issue multiple notices to CRRC and consider enforcing a ₹372-crore bank guarantee. To salvage the situation, CRRC partnered with Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, a Kolkata-based firm, enabling train deliveries to resume. Currently, BMRCL has only three train sets available for the Yellow Line. A fourth set is undergoing trials at the Titagarh facility and is expected to be dispatched by July 28, with delivery to Bengaluru likely by August 12, officials said. 'Following the CMRS inspection, BMRCL will need around two weeks to incorporate any safety or operational recommendations. If timelines are met, partial commercial operations on the Yellow Line could begin by mid-August,' an official added.

Namma Metro Yellow Line nears commercial launch
Bengaluru: Bengaluru'slong-awaited Yellow Line of the Namma Metro, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, is finally nearing commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in the city's expanding metro infrastructure. Sources indicate that the official inauguration is likely to take place in August, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to flag off the service. Stretching over 19.15 kilometers, the Yellow Line is currently awaiting its final safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), whose inspection is scheduled between July 22 and 25. While most technical certifications are in place—including the crucial Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) for the signalling systems—the green light from CMRS will be the final step before the line becomes operational. The ISA certification, essential for Metro safety protocols, has already been granted to the Yellow Line's signalling partner Siemens India Ltd in collaboration with Siemens AG and a government agency from Italy. With this, the only remaining requirement is the CMRS's inspection report, which will evaluate key elements like tracks, viaducts, signalling, station amenities, and infrastructure readiness. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is reportedly considering three operational strategies, which include full-service across all 16 stations, a shorter run between RV Road and Bommasandra with select stops, or operations limited between Bommasandra and Central Silk Board. Currently, BMRCL has three trains ready for deployment, with a fourth undergoing testing and likely to arrive by July 28. Preparations for the inauguration are already in motion, with BMRCL engaging a private firm to create a promotional documentary featuring drone visuals of the route and its modern amenities. This is expected to be showcased during the launch event in early August. The Yellow Line passes through prominent locations such as Bommasandra, Electronic City, Central Silk Board, BTM Layout, and Jayadeva Hospital, promising to ease commute for thousands of daily travelers in the city's southern tech corridor. With its launch, Bengaluru inches closer to a fully integrated metro network aimed at reducing traffic congestion and boosting public transportation efficiency.
