Cheryl Miller Reveals What 'Bothers' Her About Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese's Rivalry
Cheryl Miller Reveals What 'Bothers' Her About Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese's Rivalry originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese have built one of the biggest rivalries in women's sports, and WNBA legend Cheryl Miller believes it mirrors the iconic rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Advertisement Similar to Magic and Bird, the rivalry between Clark and Reese began during the 2023 women's national championship, when Reese's LSU Tigers defeated Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes. But Clark got her revenge a year later in the 2024 Elite Eight. Fast forward to their WNBA careers, both stars have found early success, earning spots on the 2024 All-Star team. However, Clark may have edged out Reese in their rookie campaigns by winning Rookie of the Year and earning All-WNBA honors. Cheryl Miller reflects on Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese's WNBA Lee-USA TODAY Sports On Friday, Miller joined Candace Parker on the latest episode of "All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson." The trio discussed the growing rivalry between Clark and Reese, with Miller doubling down on her comparison to the legendary Magic-Bird rivalry. Advertisement "Well, the reason I do it is, and just because I'm old school, you had Magic and Larry, who competed in college, but it has championships," Miller said. "So, Magic won. Larry didn't. It's kind of like the same thing, a little, with Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark. But the difference is, with the men, it's a rivalry, and it's great theater." Miller went on to address the contrasting narratives between men's and women's sports, admitting that the way Clark and Reese's rivalry is portrayed bothers her. "The narrative is always different with the women," Miller added. "We're either petty, or jealous, envious. You know, we can't just be... Or two people who just generally don't like you, and that's OK. I don't have to like you. I respect your game and everything else. But we don't have to be kumbaya. But it's the narrative by the media that bothers me." So far in the WNBA, Clark holds the head-to-head record at 4-1. The Fever and Sky will meet three more times in the 2025 season, with the next matchup on July 27. Candace Parker opens up on why WNBA coaching might not be in the cards
The post Candace Parker opens up on why WNBA coaching might not be in the cards appeared first on ClutchPoints. Throughout her career, Candace Parker has done it all. She is one of the most decorated players in the history of women's basketball. Advertisement In college, she won two national championships with the Tennessee Volunteers. Candace Parker is also a three-time WNBA champion, two-time WNBA MVP, and two-time Olympic gold medalist. Not to mention that she is a popular basketball analyst and will have her jersey retired by two teams. With all that combined with her knowledge of the game, is she destined to be a coach? She said it was not likely, according to former NFL player Keyshawn Johnson, on his podcast, All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson. Parker said it was her daughter who told her so. 'My daughter told me early, mom you do not have the patient to coach and I'm gonna listen because I just don't understand how look at them as they like can't dribble the ball up the court and you're not like, how can you not just do a simple dribble hand off,' she said. 'And you're patient about it.' Advertisement Candace Parker becoming the next Cheryl Miller? Parker hinted at coaching and wanting to follow in the footsteps of fellow legend Cheryl Miller. However, she said she wouldn't have had the patience Miller had. Miller, who was also on the podcast, joked that she could have learned the most from great players to become a great coach. 'I was convinced that I was going to break the mold, Miller said. 'You know how they say great players supposedly don't make great coaches? There might be some truth in that.' Much like Parker, Miller is a basketball savant. She did it all as a player, coach, and broadcaster, essentially paving the way for Parker. From 1993 to 1995, Miller was the coach at her alma mater, USC. Advertisement In 1997, Miller was the first head coach for the Phoenix Mercury. She led them to the 1998 WNBA Finals, but they lost to the Houston Comets. Cheryl Miller Turns Heads With Strong Message About Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese
Cheryl Miller Turns Heads With Strong Message About Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When it comes to women's basketball, few voices carry more weight than the legendary Cheryl Miller — one of the greatest college athletes of all time during her career at USC. Advertisement Unfortunately, after suffering a knee injury in the late 1980s, Miller never had the opportunity to play in the WNBA, which wasn't established until 1996. Still, she has remained involved in the game in various capacities over the years, and she recently turned heads with her comments on one of the WNBA's most talked-about storylines: the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Clark and Reese have both had tremendous starts to their professional careers. But following a heated season-opening matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky, conversations around their rivalry — and the reaction it sparks — have intensified. While some fans have taken things to an extreme, Miller shared a strong, thoughtful message about both players during a recent appearance on the "All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson" podcast, where she spoke alongside fellow basketball icon Candace Parker. "I understand the narratives and the storylines, but at some point, can we just focus on the fact that Caitlin is a baller? She's a dog — she wants to compete. The same goes for Angel. Her game is constantly evolving, as it should, and they both just want to win. That should be enough. I couldn't care less about what people say, as long as it doesn't define who they are. Keep it between the lines." Advertisement Fans reacted to Miller's comments: "We've been told to respect the legends, right? Well, the legends have spoken, let's see who's got a problem with it," a fan said. Another person posted, "There is no debate, one is irrelevant and the other is the face of her generation. Someone else added, "Because I knooooow yall not mad at this lmao." WNBA All-Star coach Cheryl Miller talks to Fever guard Caitlin Clark on Media Day at the Footprint Center on July 19, Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK The debate truly began during their college days, when Caitlin Clark starred at Iowa and Angel Reese led LSU to a national championship victory over Clark and the Hawkeyes. That rivalry carried into the pros, with Clark being selected No. 1 overall by the Fever in the 2024 WNBA draft and Reese going No. 7 to the Sky. Advertisement Since entering the league, the two have been constantly compared — despite playing completely different positions, bringing distinct styles to the court, and excelling in their own unique ways. Candace Parker Names Greatest Women's Basketball Player Ever Without Hesitation
Candace Parker Names Greatest Women's Basketball Player Ever Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When discussing the greatest women's basketball player of all time, there's no doubt many would include WNBA legend Candace Parker in the conversation. Advertisement However, with the WNBA not being established until 1996, several elite players from earlier generations didn't receive the same recognition or opportunities that today's stars enjoy. One of those trailblazing athletes is former USC Trojans icon Cheryl Miller — and according to Parker, she is the "GOAT" of women's basketball. '100%, she's always been that,' Parker said during an appearance on "All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson." 'You put her in this era — it doesn't matter. She's going to do what she does.' Parker also recalled her first time hearing about Miller: 'I remember Reggie [Miller] playing the Bulls, and my dad was like, 'Reggie has a sister,' and I just thought — one of the greatest basketball players on the men's side had a sister who was even better.' Advertisement She continued, "The amount of respect I have for her and how much she means to women's basketball... the feeling is mutual, she is an icon." TNT broadcaster Candace Parker during the Golden State Warriors game against the Phoenix Suns at Footprint J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports via Imagn Images Cheryl Miller's collegiate career at USC spanned from 1982 to 1986, but recurring knee injuries ultimately prevented her from pursuing a professional playing career. Had she ever played in the WNBA, it would have required a return to the court more than a decade after her college days had ended. Nonetheless, Miller left behind one of the most decorated careers in women's basketball history. She led the Trojans to back-to-back national championships in 1983 and 1984, earned four All-American honors, and won several prestigious awards, including the Naismith Trophy and the Wade Trophy. She also became the first player — male or female — in USC history to have their jersey retired. Advertisement In 1993, Miller returned to her alma mater as head coach. She was later inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. Caitlin Clark heard aiming brutal dig at WNBA rivals on live stream after Indiana Fever cup win
WNBA star Caitlin Clark has finally fired back at her league rivals after aiming a brutal dig at them while celebrating Indiana Fever's Commissioner's Cup triumph. Despite Clark being ruled out of Tuesday night's final with a groin injury, Indiana still ran out 74-59 winners over the Minnesota Lynx to claim the trophy, with Natasha Howard putting up a game-high 16 points in the victory. And after getting their hands on silverware, Fever players headed back to the locker room for a wild party where Clark seemingly took aim at their rivals. In a clip from the live stream, which left resurfaced on X, Clark could be heard saying: 'Guys, I just know everybody in the league is sick'. One of her Fever teammates, Aaliyah Boston, laughed at the remark and responded: 'They're p***ed!'. Another player was heard saying: 'They hate us!' Since rising to prominence in the WNBA, Clark has also seemingly become a target among some of her league rivals. Clark was heard, on a live stream, claiming that 'everybody in the league is sick' of the Fever Some fans have claimed that the Fever star has been mistreated by her WNBA peers, who have continued to be rough her up in her second season. Women's basketball legend Cheryl Miller claimed in March that Clark was 'despised' by some in the WNBA community because of her race. 'I know what it's like to be hated. I know what it's like to be a black woman and hated because of my color. I can't imagine this young lady - I don't wanna use 'hate' but despised...,' Miller said on All the Smoke. Miller's comments came after Washington Mystics co-owner Sheila Johnson attributed Clark's race to her winning TIME Magazine's Athlete of the Year award. Meanwhile, Clark was left stunned after one of her Indiana Fever teammates performed a lewd sexual act on her during the celebratory live stream. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year was leaning over to talk to the camera during an Instagram live recording when Fever guard Sydney Colson snuck up from behind and jokingly tried to dry hump her. 'Woah bro,' Clark said as she jumped up in shock before laughing, 'absolutely not, no thank you!' Elsewhere in the celebrations, new Indiana hero Sophie Cunningham was also seen twerking in front of the camera during the same Instagram live session.
