Drop serves killer looks

DROP, the American thriller directed by Christopher Landon, arrives with an irresistible premise: a first date that spirals into a nightmare of anonymous threats, escalating dangers and rising suspicion. Add in the backing of genre powerhouses Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes and expectations naturally soar. But while Drop delivers gorgeously polished visuals and performances, its narrative leans heavily on familiar tricks, asking viewers to stay patient as it unfurls its tangled threads. There is no denying that Drop is a feast for the eyes. Cinematographer (who deserves applause here) bathes the upscale restaurant setting in moody lighting, gleaming surfaces and just the right touches of noirish shadow. Every glass of wine, flicker of candlelight and nervous glance is captured with surgical precision. This is a film where even a cell phone notification looks cinematic. But as sharp as the visuals are, the plot sometimes struggles to keep pace. Familiar recipe (but still tasty enough) Let us be clear: Drop does not reinvent the thriller wheel. The core premise: a protagonist trapped in a confined, elegant space while an unseen tormentor pulls the strings, echoes everything from Phone Booth to Panic Room. Add in a widowed protagonist with a tragic backstory, a too-charming date and a parade of suspicious side characters and the setup feels more comfort-food familiar than groundbreaking. Yet despite the sense of déjà vu, Drop remains a solid watch. This is thanks largely to Meghann Fahy's magnetic presence as Violet, the frazzled yet determined single mom trying to navigate both dating jitters and escalating danger. Fahy brings an emotional vulnerability that grounds the more outlandish moments, making the audience root for her even when the plot feels like it is jogging in place. Brandon Sklenar's Henry, meanwhile, plays the charming date with just the right amount of 'Is he or isn't he?' ambiguity. The supporting cast, including Violett Beane as Violet's sister and Gabrielle Ryan as the sharp-eyed bartender, fill out the ensemble with texture, even if many of them serve more as set dressing for Violet's rising paranoia. Let tension build Here is the key to enjoying Drop: approach it knowing that it is not a nonstop thrill ride. This is not one of those breathless, edge-of-your-seat thrillers where the plot fires off twists every ten minutes. Instead, Landon crafts a deliberately slow burn, teasing out the tension piece by piece. For some, this will be a treat, a rare thriller that luxuriates in mood, atmosphere and simmering dread. For others, it might test their patience. There are stretches where the movie seems to coast on its vibes rather than push the story forward and the central mystery occasionally feels padded out to stretch the runtime. But for viewers willing to sink into the slow-building unease, Drop offers a satisfying payoff. Visual that outshines its plot It bears repeating: the real star of Drop is its visual design. The film's upscale restaurant setting is a living, breathing character, full of reflective surfaces, shadowy corners and a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere. Director Landon, known for stylish genre hits like Happy Death Day and Freaky, brings his playful touch here, making even the most mundane objects: a phone, a cocktail glass, a note scribbled on a napkin, pop with cinematic flair. The visuals are so compelling that they often distract from the more predictable beats of the story. There is a sense that Landon and his team know they are working with a somewhat familiar script, so they lean hard into the atmosphere, ensuring the film at least looks fresher than it reads. For thriller fans who value aesthetics and mood, this attention to detail makes Drop worth the ticket price alone. Worth a watch, with right expectations Drop is not the most original thriller to hit screens this year, but it does not need to be. It knows what it is doing, delivering a tense, visually stunning cat-and-mouse game wrapped in a glossy package and it does it well enough to satisfy. Sure, the plot relies on familiar tropes and the pacing demands a patient viewer, but the overall experience is polished, suspenseful and anchored by strong lead performances. Audiences looking for groundbreaking twists or adrenaline-pumping action might walk away wishing for more. But for those content to settle in for a stylish, slow-burning thriller with a killer aesthetic, Drop delivers just enough thrills to keep them watching and admiring how good it all looks along the way. Drop Review: Competently Executed Claustrophobic Thriller

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Drop is the new thriller from Blumhouse, and the movie is competently executed, capitalizing on the claustrophobia of its promising premise. Directed by Christopher Landon, Meghann Fahy stars as a widow who goes on her first blind date in years. Brandon Sklenar plays the man she meets in a swanky rooftop restaurant. The date is going well until she receives menacing AirDrops on her phone. The messages begin as memes, but they soon turn sinister, asking her to poison her date, as she learns that an assassin is threatening her young son back at home. Drop has a good and compelling premise. The messages must be coming from someone in the restaurant, so there is an inherent mystery. If there were more than a few suspects, it would have been easier for Drop to extend the premise to a feature-length movie; with only two real suspects, it feels like the mystery overstays its welcome. And there's nothing special that allows the audience to solve the mystery: at a certain point you'll likely realize it's one of two suspects, and it turns out to be this one instead of that one. As a conventional thriller, Drop works well because of the performances. Fahy is good in the lead role, able to portray both her character's internal conflict as well as a semi-convincing front for her character's date. Sklenar is carving out a nice little niche for himself as the sympathetic guy who comforts domestic violence survivors, the same role he served in It Ends with Us (2024). Drop includes themes of domestic violence, and the subject is treated sympathetically and empathetically. Some of the dialogue is a bit wonky here and there with a few of the lines better fitting on inspirational posters rather than in the mouths of actors, but Drop is neither exploitative nor deep in its portrayal. Blumhouse's recent releases, particularly The Woman in the Yard and Ouija, have felt cheap rather than economical, but Drop is a welcome change. It is by no means a flashy or ground-breaking film, and any comparisons to Hitchcock are vastly over-stated, but it is a competently made, intelligently realized, and basically compelling thriller. Drop review – Meghann Fahy stars in scary smartphone thriller

If you thought the techno-horrors of the modern dating landscape were largely confined to dick-pic purveyors on the apps, director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) has news for you. This assured thriller sees a widowed single mum and abuse survivor dipping her toe back into the relationship circuit, only to find herself terrorised by quirky memes. It's scarier than it sounds. Having reluctantly left her young son in the care of her sister, Violet (Meghann Fahy) arrives at an upmarket restaurant for a first date with a charming photographer named Henry (Brandon Sklenar). But from the outset something is off. Violet is bombarded by a series of increasingly threatening 'digi-drops' (an AirDrop, or wireless file transfer, to all intents and purposes). The messages warn of harm to her son unless she does exactly what she is told – and her instructions include committing a murder. There's a 50ft radius in which to send or receive a digi-drop, so the sender must be in the restaurant. But since every punter in the place is glued to their phones, that doesn't narrow it down much. Violet must use her well-honed survival instincts to make it through to the dessert course. It's enjoyable stuff: a taut and crisply edited balance between humour and horror.

Where to Watch ‘Drop': Is Christopher Landon's New Movie Streaming?

If you were to imagine the worst possible first date ever, would it include being blackmailed into killing your date under the threat of your son being murdered? We'd really hope not. But such is the case for Meghann Fahy in the new movie 'Drop.' In it, she plays a single mom headed out on her first date in years. While there, she begins receiving mysterious messages from an unknown numbers, escalating in how menacing they are. Filmmaker Christopher Landon is the writer-director of the film, following 'We Have a Ghost' and hits like 'Freaky,' 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones' and the 'Happy Death Day' films. Here's what you need to know. 'Drop' released nationwide on Friday, April 11, 2025. It is not. For now, you can only catch 'Drop' in theaters. It is a Universal film though, meaning it'll most likely head to Peacock when it comes time for its streaming release. We'll keep you posted on when that'll be. For now, you can find tickets here. Like we mentioned, 'Drop' really shows the first date from hell. While out for dinner with a very charming man (Brandon Sklenar), Violet (Fahy) starts receiving instructions to kill him, or else her son at home with a babysitter will be murdered. She's not allowed to be caught, nor is she allowed to tip anyone off in an effort to get help. What follows is a truly terrible evening, in which Violet tries to ensure everyone gets out alive. Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson and Ed Weeks star in the film alongside Fahy and Sklenar. The post Where to Watch 'Drop': Is Christopher Landon's New Movie Streaming? appeared first on TheWrap.
