The motorsport movie netted $10 million at the box office during early screenings. The movie opened on Friday, June 27, though certain theaters were holding early showings ahead of the official release. The projected box office is $115 million for the opening weekend, recouping more than half of the film's reported production cost. The movie reportedly cost a total of about $200 million to produce - without accounting for the marketing budget. Photo byJoseph Kosinski directed the film, which was produced by Apple Studios and features notable input from seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton was a producer on the film, giving his feedback on the accuracy of the movie to the sport itself. The Ferrari driver also added to the story of the movie, according to Kosinski. "Lewis also contributed to the story. I mean, there's a part in the film where Sonny Hayes talks about why he races, and almost the spiritual side of it," the director said. "And that also was inspired by a conversation with Lewis. His involvement has been amazing. We couldn't make the film without him." Kosinski also worked on "Top Gun: Maverick," making him the ideal leader of an action film featuring some of the fastest cars on the planet. Legendary composer Hans Zimmer worked on the music for the film. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris are the lead actors in the film, portraying two teammates who battle it out on the track. Ahead of the movie, both Pitt and Idris went through exhaustive training for the film, driving several race cars at different tracks. "F1" features real drivers and teams appearing and making cameos, adding to the film's realism and connecting the atmosphere to what happened in the 2023 season. The movie sees retired driver Sonny Hayes return to the paddock after his former teammate and friend, Ruben, asks him to come back. The fictional team APXGP is on the verge of being sold and needs a sharp upturn in form. Hayes, played by Pitt, needs to mentor the young hotshot Joshua Pierce (Idris) as the pair takes on a mentor-mentee relationship. The movie is set to be a summer blockbuster, pacing to beat out many of the summer movies, though it will likely fall short of Marvel's "Fantastic Four" and "Superman." Movie theatre ‘visionary': Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob praised as he plans retirement

TORONTO - Movie theatre giant Cineplex Inc. says president and chief executive Ellis Jacob will retire at the end of next year, in what industry watchers say marks the end of an era for the company. Cineplex board chair Phyllis Yaffe praised Jacob for his work in building the company over the past four decades. The company said Jacob will continue to lead Cineplex in the interim and help in the transition to new leadership. 'Ellis is, quite simply, a giant in our industry,' Yaffe said in a press release. 'It has been a privilege to work alongside him for many years and we look forward to working with him through this transition.' Jacob was appointed president and chief executive of Cineplex in 2003 when the Canadian assets of Lowes Cineplex Entertainment and Galaxy Entertainment Inc. were merged. Before his current role, Jacob was president and CEO of Galaxy Entertainment, which he co-founded in 1999. That shift more than 20 years ago marked the first time in decades that Canada's movie theatre footprint was largely owned by Canadian companies, said Paul Moore, a professor of film history at Toronto Metropolitan University. 'Ellis Jacob is there at the helm of another moment of a big transition in the industry here in Canada — he's at the helm of actually creating a Canadian-owned business that runs the majority of movie theatres across Canada,' said Moore. 'Historically, if you look back from the 1930s all the way up to the 1990s, there's always been concern about our movie theatres are owned by Hollywood, and that's why we don't see our own stories on screen. Well, for 20 years now, we've had Cineplex being Canadian-owned.' Moore said the company has navigated a number of challenges during Jacob's leadership, including the rise of streaming platforms and plummeting box office sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the company has pulled through 'partly because of its gorilla-sized proportion of the market' in Canada. 'So whenever a blockbuster does come along like Top Gun Maverick or most recently, the Minecraft movie, it's almost always a Cineplex theatre that Canadians go see that big blockbuster,' said Moore. 'And it's kind of protected them to a certain extent from competition domestically, and helped the transition here in Canada of the decline of everyday movie-going and the real shift to only occasional blockbuster movie-going.' Cineplex spent much of the pandemic period grappling with the fallout from its failed sale to U.K. theatre company Cineworld Group PLC. The scuttled $2.8 billion deal wound up in a court battle meant to decide whether Cineworld had the right to walk away from the transaction. A judge sided with Cineplex, but Cineworld made an appeal before it filed for bankruptcy in the United States. Cineplex has since said it does not expect to meaningfully recoup its costs. Today, Cineplex has more than 170 movie theatres and entertainment venues across Canada. The company has also long run its RecRoom arcade and dining venues, which Moore noted has helped diversify the movie-going experience for consumers. In a statement, Jacob said he has 'unwavering confidence in Cineplex's bright future' and was committed to working with the company's board as it transitions to a new CEO. 'After thoughtful consideration, I welcome this next chapter,' he said. 'For decades, I have been focused on making Cineplex a great Canadian company, and I move forward with immense pride in what we've built for generations of Canadian movie fans who come to us for those magical moments of escape that can only be found in a true theatre experience.' RBC analyst Drew McReynolds said Jacob 'has been the visionary beating heart of not only Cineplex but the broader theatrical exhibition industry for decades.' 'While these shoes are next to impossible to fill, we expect the leadership transition at Cineplex to be seamless and believe the transition timing is consistent with what should be a full industry recovery by 2026,' McReynolds said in a note on Friday. Stars arrive in London for European premiere of F1: The Movie

The stars of F1: The Movie have made a pit stop in London for the European premiere of the film. The movie is out in UK cinemas on June 25, and in it Brad Pitt stars as a veteran driver making a return to the sport after nearly three decades. He leads an ensemble cast that includes Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia and Samson Kayo. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, was filmed on Formula 1 tracks during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, with some scenes shot at the Atlassian Williams Racing headquarters in Grove, Oxfordshire. It has has received mixed reviews from critics. Pitt was among the stars on the red carpet at the premiere at Cineworld, Leicester Square, arriving with girlfriend Ines de Ramon. It comes just as Pitt made an appearance on Dax Shephard's Armchair Expert podcast, where they spoke about getting to know each other in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. 'I just thought it was just incredible men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humor with it,' he told the host. 'I thought it was a really special experience.' At first, he said he was 'shy' coming into the AA group, adding: 'I was pretty much on my knees, and I was really open. 'I was trying anything and everyone. Anything anyone threw at me. It was a difficult time. I needed rebooting. I needed to wake the f— up in some areas. And it just meant a lot to me.' The US premiere for the film happened last week, with Pitt and his girlfriend de Ramon making a rare red carpet appearance together. Their red carpet moment comes just days after they were seen dining in Manhattan with Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper at Cote Korean Steakhouse. Pitt and de Ramon first appeared on the red carpet as a couple in September 2024 at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of Wolfs, his project with George Clooney. Othr famous faces at the London premiere included singer Ed Sheeran and actress Simone Ashley.
