Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300C
Manufactured by Stellantis South Africa between 2014 and 2016, both the Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300C are being recalled due to alarming defects with Takata airbags. The issue lies in the passenger airbag inflator, which could rupture during normal deployment, releasing metal fragments that could injure or even kill vehicle occupants. The Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5, produced from 2009 to 2016, are also affected by similar airbag inflator defects. Mercedes-Benz welcomes EU-US deal after profits plunge on tariff woes
FRANKFURT - A new trade deal struck between the United States and European Union is good news despite fears it is unbalanced, Mercedes-Benz said Wednesday after the German carmaker reported a tariff hit of hundreds of millions of euros in the second quarter. "I have respect for what the EU commission and (trade commissioner) Maros Sefcovic and co have worked up in the past few months", chief executive Ola Kaellenius told reporters on a call. "It will help us rather than damage us". US President Donald Trump and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced a deal Sunday taking the US tariff on imported cars to 15 percent, down from 27.5 percent. But critics in Europe including France's Prime Minister Francois Bayrou have castigated the deal as one-sided since it foresees no baseline tariff on US goods entering the EU. "Zero is not a gift to the Americans in this context," Kaellenius said, since German carmakers were "the biggest exporters" into the EU from the United States. About two-thirds of the vehicles which Mercedes-Benz makes at its Tuscaloosa plant in the United States were exported out of the country, Kaellenius said, adding that Mercedes-Benz was looking to ramp up production in places where it made most economic sense. "That is not new, not just because of these tariffs," he said. "It is best not to react hastily but to really think hard about what our footprint should be over the next five to ten years." PROFIT PLUNGE Reporting second-quarter results, Mercedes-Benz said the tariffs introduced by Trump had cost the firm hundreds of millions of euros. Without tariffs the firm's car business would have achieved a profit margin of 6.6 percent compared to an actual 5.1 percent, Mercedes-Benz said, on overall sales of 24.2 billion euros at the cars division for the quarter. Overall net profit plunged nearly 70 percent to 957 million euros ($1.1 billion), hit by the tariffs as well as weak sales in China, prompting Mercedes-Benz to lower its full-year revenue outlook. The firm now forecasts groupwide revenue to be "significantly below" the 146 billion euros it took in last year. Back in February it expected 2025 revenue to be "slightly below" the 2024 level. Trump in April slapped an additional 25-percent levy on imported cars as part of an aggressive trade policy he says will help boost US manufacturing. That hit European carmakers, with Jeep- and Citroen-owner Stellantis as well as auto giant Volkswagen all reporting slumping North American sales at recent results. Mercedes-Benz's own sales by volume fell 12 percent in the United States over the period. In China they tumbled 19 percent, underlining the challenge the company faces against local competitors such as BYD. Along with other carmakers, Mercedes-Benz then withdrew its guidance in April whilst it digested the impact of Trump's tariff blitz. At its key cars division Mercedes-Benz said that it now forecasts a profit margin of between 4 and 6 percent, including the effects of tariffs. Excluding tariffs it expects a profit margin of between 6 and 8 percent.

Antonelli paying price for ‘wrong steps' by Mercedes
Mercedes have made mistakes in developing their Formula One car and teenage Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli's struggles are a consequence of that, according to technical director James Allison. Antonelli, 18, finished third in Canada in June for his first F1 podium but has since failed to score. He has had two retirements since Montreal and 17th in a sprint race in Belgium last Saturday and 16th in Sunday's main grand prix. The Italian, who took a sprint pole in Miami and is the sport's youngest ever race leader, has retired four times in the last seven rounds and admitted in Belgium he was lacking confidence in the car and not driving as he would like. "I think he's, like the rest of us, massively fed up with a string of results that are well below what we were collectively achieving earlier in the year," Allison said in a Belgian race debrief on Tuesday. "I hope he takes some solace from the fact that we tell him, and it's demonstrably a fact, that we have taken the wrong steps with the car, making our team less competitive, and he is paying the price for that, as is George (Russell). "If the car isn't where it needs to be, it will be a struggle getting through the qualifying stages in your rookie season in F1." Allison said it was "utterly clear" to everyone the car needed to be better and Antonelli's fortunes would improve when it was. "Hopefully he's listening to us as we say those reassuring words because we absolutely know he is putting in the effort on his side of the bargain," he said. Mercedes are third overall, 28 points behind second-placed Ferrari, with one win by Russell in Canada. Russell has been on the podium five times and is fourth overall with 157 points to Antonelli's 63. Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, whose seat Antonelli took when the Briton moved to Ferrari, showed his support for the Italian after Saturday qualifying at Spa. "He was telling me to keep my head up, and that it is normal to have bad weekends, and to keep believing," the Italian told reporters. Hamilton told Sky Sports television he could not imagine what the rookie was going through. "He's been doing fantastic. But to be thrown in at the deep end at 18. He hadn't even had his driving licence when he started racing," he said.

Helmut Marko says Max Verstappen is staying at Red Bull for 2026
Red Bull Racing will have Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen for at least another season. Team adviser Helmut Marko said Monday the four-time defending F1 champion would return to the team in 2026 despite reported interest from Mercedes. A widely reported exit clause in Verstappen's Red Bull contract would have allowed him to leave the team at the end of the year if he were fourth or lower in the championship standings as of the Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place on Sunday. After the Belgian Grand Prix last Sunday, Verstappen sits in third place in the F1 standings and far enough ahead of fourth-place George Russell (28 points) that he cannot be caught in Hungary. The understanding of Verstappen's situation was confirmed when Marko spoke to German outlet "I can confirm Max Verstappen will drive for Red Bull in 2026," Marko said. Mercedes' cars are occupied by Russell and potential rising star Kimi Antonelli, but Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has not denied looking into pursuing Verstappen, the most winning F1 driver since his first championship in 2021.
