Ludhiana: Assailants torch SUV, bludgeon 26-yr-old trader to death; 2 booked
A 26-year-old man was beaten to death late on Tuesday night near Kothe Sherjang village after armed assailants intercepted his SUV, set it on fire, and attacked him with iron rods as he tried to escape. The victim, Jaskirat Singh Jassa. (HT Photo) Police have identified the victim as Jaskirat Singh Jassa. 'Jassa was being followed by masked men on a motorcycle while travelling in his Scorpio car. As he reached a deserted stretch near the village, the unidentified assailants intercepted his vehicle and poured petrol on the SUV and set it ablaze. Jassa jumped out to escape the fire, but was chased down and beaten with iron rods by the assailants,' station house officer (SHO) Varinder Pal Singh said. Locals rushed him to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in Ludhiana, where he succumbed to his injuries early on Wednesday, the SHO said. According to police, Jassa worked in the share market and had earlier received threats related to personal enmity. 'Following the threats, he had moved from his native village, Akhara, to Kothe Sherjang around three years ago and had reportedly kept a low profile since,' the SHO added. Eyewitnesses stated that Jaskirat was being followed by masked men on a motorcycle. The incident took place on a deserted stretch of road near the village. After intercepting the SUV, the attackers allegedly poured petrol on the vehicle and set it ablaze. As Jaskirat jumped out, he was caught and beaten with iron rods, they said. Investigators said a licenced firearm and two magazines, believed to belong to the victim, were destroyed in the fire. SHO Varinder Pal Singh and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Jasjot Singh visited the spot and initiated an investigation. 'We have booked Ramandeep Singh of Jagraon and his brother Kuljeet Singh, with whom the victim had an old rivalry, in connection with the case. A murder case has been registered. Their aides are yet to be identified,' said inspector Singh 'The attackers used both a motorcycle and a car for the crime. Raids are being conducted to trace them,' he added. The incident comes two days after a separate shooting at Kamal Chowk, where unidentified men opened fire outside a jewellery shop. The case remains unsolved.

Staff members close ranks to help injured govt school student
Staff members of the School of Eminence, Sekhewal, have come together to support one of their students, Gurpreet Singh , a class XI student, who suffered a serious intestinal injury during a routine judo practice session at the school. Gurpreet is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital, with medical expenses already exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh. The school community has mobilised resources to assist the student and his family. Staff informed that Gurpreet was practising as usual when he complained of abdominal pain. Initially, it did not appear to be serious and he home. Later, his condition worsened." School principal Naresh Kumar said that scanning showed internal bleeding. "We consulted a friend who is a doctor and he recommended a surgery. We had him admitted in DMCH and the operation was carried out successfully," he said. Stunned by the harrowing ordeal the teen was undergoing, staff members rallied together to ensure that the boy received timely medical care. Harmeet Singh Walia, a lecturer, said that it was their collective responsibility. "We all feel for the child," Walia said. Expressing gratitude towards the school, he said, "We are not in a position to bear such huge expenses. The school helped us, and I have also borrowed money from friends and relatives but we are still short, and I don't know how we will manage further treatment and recovery costs. I work on contract. It has been about 10 days since he got injured. These days in hospital also mean loss of earnings," he said. Besides direct contributions, the school staff has reached out to the office of cabinet minister Sanjeev Arora and is urging NGOs to extend medical and financial support, the school principal said.

Health minister inaugurates projects worth Rs 11.6 crore in Dharmapuri district
DHARMAPURI: Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian inaugurated new projects worth Rs 12.63 crore across the district, and also participated in the 12th convocation at the Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital (DMCH), along with Agriculture Minister MRK Panneerselvam, where 88 students had graduated. Speaking at the meeting, Subramanian said, "Since the DMK government came to power, Chief Minister MK Stalin has taken steps to improve the infrastructure of all hospitals across the state. As testament to this, in Dharmapuri, we inaugurated 11 projects, including a new MRI unit in DMCH. A pay ward with 50 beds has also been introduced. We have also constructed a special observation ward for postnatal mothers and children, and other projects worth Rs 12.63 crores. Moreover, since Stalin took charge, 11 government medical college hospitals have seen infrastructure upgrades worth Rs 4,722.51 crore."

One dies, several injured in Muharram-related incidents
Patna: Incidents of electrocution and clashes were reported from Darbhanga, Gopalganj and Katihar districts during the Muharram procession. While a person lost life and several others sustained injuries in an electrocution incident in Darbhanga, processions in Gopalganj and Katihar witnessed violent clashes between groups. A person was electrocuted, while more than a dozen were severely burned during a tazia procession in Darbhanga district late Saturday night. The incident took place at Kakorha village of Tardih block under Sakatpur police station area during a Muharram procession. The tazia came in contact with a high-tension wire of 11,000 volt while people from three villages gathered for the traditional 'tazia milan'. Sakatpur SHO, Manish Kumar, said, "A person died and 24 others were injured in the incident. The injured were admitted to the primary health centre at Tardih first, then referred to DMCH, Darbhanga. The patients are currently receiving medical care, and doctors have confirmed their conditions are stable. Authorities are conducting a probe into the matter."
