Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 9 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that the state government is working with full commitment towards its senior citizens. In a press release, the Chief Minister's office made a humble appeal to senior citizens, stating that if they feel neglected in their living situation, they should immediately contact their nearest Maintenance Tribunal or District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO). CM Dhami said that the government is committed to providing dignity and protection to senior citizens. In this sequence, the District Magistrates have been made the presiding officers of the district-level appellate tribunal to resolve the problems of senior citizens, and they have been asked to dispose of the related complaints. CM Dhami, while giving instructions to the officials of the Social Welfare Department, said that the 'Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 (MWPSC Act, 2007)', implemented to protect the rights of senior citizens, should be implemented effectively. This Act provides a legal system of maintenance to senior citizens and parents from their children, adult grandchildren or property heirs. This is the second time the survey is being done to include their details like conditions in which they are living, orphanage or any other place. "After 2020, their number may have increased significantly as many children were orphaned because of the Covid-19 pandemic. There could be more children of single parents as in many cases either the mother or father died. In many families, both died," said a govt officer.

Social welfare officer suspended after minister finds hostel switchboards changed only on paper
Lucknow: Taking note of a corruption case in his department, social welfare minister (independent charge) Asim Arun has recommended the suspension of the social welfare officer of Barabanki. The action against DSWO Sushma Verma follows an inspection by the minister during which financial irregularities in the repair and maintenance of a govt-run Scheduled Caste (SC) boys' hostel in Ramnagar surfaced. According to the minister, the hostel received ₹5 lakh for repair works but the site inspection found that 71 switchboards were billed, but were installed, 30 tube lights were shown, but only 6 looked new, 50 bulbs and holders were mentioned, but none were present, and PVC pipe bills were suspiciously submitted in place of lighting materials. The inspection revealed Rs 1.31 lakh in fraudulent billing. "I found clear discrepancies between the bills and actual work done. I ordered immediate suspension of the hostel superintendent and Verma for gross negligence. The embezzled money will be recovered, and legal action will follow," said Arun, who visited the hostel himself.
