Wriddhiman Saha All Set To Enter Coaching Arena, Likely To Become Head Coach Of...
Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy.
Six months into retirement from competitive cricket, one of India's finest wicketkeepers, Wriddhiman Saha, is all set to enter the coaching arena, with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) showing interest in hiring him as the head coach of the U-23 state team.
Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy.
It is understood that former Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla will continue as the head coach of the senior team, while former off-spinner Saurashis Lahiri will coach the U-19 team.
'The CAB brass will be zeroing in on all the candidates for various teams by next week. Obviously, Wriddhi has been sounded out, and a final decision will be taken next week. Apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he is the biggest name from Bengal with 40 Tests," a senior CAB source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
'His experience of playing top-level cricket for so long will only help the Gen-Next of Bengal cricket. Wriddhi already runs a chain of coaching centres, and he has been a very hands-on coach for juniors. He is passionate about coaching. Hopefully, he will be ready," the source said.
While there is not much precedence in Bengal cricket about players being drafted into the coaching system immediately after retirement, Saha's case is slightly different considering his stature in state cricket.
The Bengal U-23 side till last season was being coached by former India opener Pranab Roy, son of the legendary late Pankaj Roy.
Many people in the Bengal circuit believe that Saha is cut out to become a good coach. His experience with the U-23 squad could prove to be handy if he joins any IPL team in the future or as a specialist coach at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Dahiya vs Sarandeep for Delhi men's Ranji coach job
Delhi Ranji team's head coach job is expected to be a two-way battle between former India players Sarandeep Singh and Vijay Dahiya, both of whom have applied for the post.
The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) is conducting interviews for support staff and selectors for various age groups (U-16, U-19, U-23) along with senior teams.
Sarandeep is the current Delhi head coach, while Dahiya has handled the state team on a couple of occasions in the past. The former India stumper is an assistant coach with Lucknow Super Giants and has also coached the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team.
'There are three candidates in the running. Sarandeep, who is our current head coach, and Dahiya, who has extensive coaching experience, have both appeared for interviews. The third strong candidate is former Delhi keeper Rajiv Vinayak," a senior DDCA official privy to developments said.

From Kalyan To Hisar To World Champ'ships, Dhaba Owner's Daughter Eyes Olympics
Vaishnavi Patil secured her spot in the World Championships with impressive speed and mat awareness. She aims for an Olympic medal. Vaishnavi Patil impressed with her speed and remarkable mat awareness at the selection trials for the forthcoming World Championships. She outsmarted her competitors one by one to secure her spot in the national team in the women's 65kg category for next month's Worlds in Zagreb. Given her tactical intelligence and strong defence, it's hard to believe that Vaishnavi has only been involved in mat wrestling for four years and has little experience in major tournaments. Typically, Indian wrestlers transition from the junior to senior level, gaining experience through domestic events, then moving to the Asian level, and gradually participating in senior international tournaments, Asian championships, before finally competing at the Worlds. Who Is Vaishnavi Patil? Vaishnavi, the daughter of a dhaba owner in Kalyan, Mumbai, has risen to the top level in the country quickly, despite starting relatively late. 'I started mat wrestling around the end of 2020. Before that I was doing only mud wrestling. When I saw Sakshi Malik win that medal in 2016 Rio, I decided what I needed to do, I just wanted to pursue this sport," Vaishnavi was quoted as saying to PTI after defeating Muskan 7-2 in the final. 'My father runs a dhaba and my mother is a housewife. My parents are managing everything for me. There weren't many good academies in Maharashtra, so I shifted to Hisar," said the 22-year-old, who trains under coach Jasbeer at the Sushil Kumar Akahada. Vaishnavi idolises American wrestler Helen Maroulis, the 2016 Olympic champion, bronze medallist at the Tokyo (2021) and Paris Games (2024), and seven-time Worlds medallist. 'She is an amazing wrestler. I watch her bouts on YouTube. I want to do well for myself and for the country. I am confident of winning a medal at the Worlds and eventually I want to win an Olympic medal." Coach Jasbeer believes that discouraging Vaishnavi from frequently visiting her home in Maharashtra has significantly contributed to her progress. 'She used to stay here for two-three months in Hisar and go back to her native place for two months. I told her parents that she needs to be at the training centre for one year. They agreed and she is a very dedicated wrestler, and the result is there," Jasbeer told PTI. 'She is very disciplined, she works very hard. We have good wrestlers at our centre and practicing with them has also helped her. She is technically sound and her counter-attacks are pretty good." Interestingly, Vaishnavi started as a swimmer and even won two state-level medals. Attending a felicitation ceremony for wrestlers and seeing the respect they received drew her to the combat sport. 'When she was in class IX, she said she wanted to become a fighter pilot and serve the country. We searched for training centres, but realising that her eyesight number was 9.7, we knew she wouldn't make it. 'We put her in swimming and one day she said she wants to change the sport. The centres were far away in Kolaba, Sangli, Satara and we did not want to send her too far. But seeing her passion, we introduced her to Jasbeer sir and sent her to Hisar," Vaishnavi's father Dilip Patil told PTI. 'Initially, her mother stayed with her, taking care of her needs. I run a dhaba near the bus stop in our village and all our earning go into her training. My bank balance is zero. I manage my house with some income from farming but all the dhaba earning is transferred to Vaishnavi. 'She showed promise quite early During her first competition, without much training she won a silver in the junior state competition and then won back-to-back gold. We speak to her only once, on Sunday as she is not allowed to keep a mobile phone by the coaches at the akhada," said Patil. Moving to Haryana, Vaishnavi had to adapt to a different culture compared to Maharashtra. 'Most people do not eat non-vegetarian food in Haryana. They rely more on milk, curd, all these things. Ghee, almonds, and all dairy products have been added to my diet, though I continue to take non-veg food. I now understand Haryanvi as well," said Vaishnavi with a big smile. tags : Olympics world championships wrestling view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 03, 2025, 19:11 IST News sports From Kalyan To Hisar To World Champ'ships, Dhaba Owner's Daughter Eyes Olympics Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ENG vs IND: Ex-coach reveals secret behind KL Rahul's 500-run England Test series
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has revealed that KL Rahul spent every available minute preparing for the England tour after the IPL, crediting the veteran batter's commitment and adaptability for his success in the five-match Test who amassed 532 runs at an average of 53.20, including two centuries and two fifties, was India's second-highest run-scorer in the series. He played key roles across different positions in the batting order and formed a solid opening partnership with Yashasvi are very, very few people who know this - after the birth of his child, he was in the IPL and came back immediately to start preparing for the England Test series," Nayar told PTI in an exclusive interview. "While a lot of people wouldn't have done that, he knew the importance of this series. He understood it." "Every minute post the last IPL game he played was about how he can do well in this Test series. So it's great to see him succeed and get the recognition he rightly deserves - being the guy who's done all the dirty jobs and still managed to perform at every number in that batting order."Nayar, who has worked closely with Rahul in his coaching capacity, said while he was not at liberty to disclose the specific technical changes Rahul had made, the results speak volumes."I can't talk about the changes I've seen in KL Rahul because then it's out there and the effectiveness goes down a lot," said Nayar, currently head coach of the UP Warriorz in the Women's Premier League. "All I can say is, whatever the changes are, they have really worked.""Sometimes - and I always say this - in a cricketer's journey and a team's journey, things need to click. You need a bit of the rub of the green. I think he's had that as well."The former Mumbai batter also lauded the Indian team's resolve through the tour, particularly after their spirited performance in Manchester."A lot of the changes that you've seen in our players getting runs are partly down to conditions, but also due to the hunger they've shown to go out there and prove a point," Nayar said."The determination in the last game, the fight they showed - it just tells you about the mentality our players carry, and the feeling they have for Test cricket."Looking ahead to the final day of the series, Nayar added: "All in all, Indian cricket is in good hands and hopefully we wrap it up today and everything's good."- EndsYou May Also Like
