New Delhi: Six months into retirement from competitive cricket, one of India's finest wicketkeepers Wriddhiman Saha is all set to enter the coaching arena with Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) showing interest in hiring him as the head coach of U-23 state team.
Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy.
It is understood that former Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla will continue as the head coach of the senior team while former off-spinner Saurashis Lahiri will coach the U-19 team.

'The CAB brass will be zeroing in on all the candidates for various teams by next week. Obviously, Wriddhi has been sounded out and a final decision will be taken next week. Apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he is the biggest name from Bengal with 40 Tests,' a senior CAB source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
'His experience of playing top level cricket for so long will only help the Gen-Next of Bengal cricket. Wriddhi already runs a chain of coaching centres and he has been a very hands on coach for juniors. He is passionate about coaching. Hopefully, he will be ready,' the source said.
While there is not much precedence in Bengal cricket about players being drafted into the coaching system immediately after retirement but Saha's case is slightly different considering his stature in state cricket.
The Bengal U-23 side till last season was being coached by former India opener Pranab Roy, son of legendary late Pankaj Roy.
Many people in Bengal circuit believe that Saha is cut out to become a good coach. His experience with U-23 squad could prove to be handy if he joins any IPL team in future or as a specialist coach at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
It's Dahiya vs Sarandeep for Delhi men's Ranji coach job
Delhi Ranji team's head coach job is expected to be a two-way battle between former India players Sarandeep Singh and Vijay Dahiya, both of whom have applied for the post.
The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) is conducting interviews for support staffs, selectors for various age group (U-16, U-19, U-23) along with senior teams.
Sarandeep is the current Delhi head coach while Dahiya has handled the state team on a couple occasions in the past. The former India stumper is an assistant coach with Lucknow Super Giants and has also coached the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team.

'There are three candidates in the running. Sarandeep, who is our current head coach and Dahiya, who has extensive coaching experience have both appeared for interviews. The third strong candidate is former Delhi keeper Rajiv Vinayak,' a senior DDCA official privy to developments said.

Anshul Kamboj Reacts After Making India Debut In Manchester Test: "Can't Express It..."

Indian pacer Anshul Kamboj showed his excitement and humility after being picked in place of injured Akash Deep for the fourth Test against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. 'The feeling is surreal. So much that I can't express it in words. I will just look to do better as much as I can,' said the 24-year-old fast bowler in a video shared by the BCCI, shortly after receiving his Test cap from former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta. Just a week ago, Kamboj was training in Karnal with a Dukes ball, hoping that his chance would come soon. When injuries hit India's pace attack ahead of the Manchester Test, the selectors turned to Kamboj — a consistent performer in domestic cricket over the past few seasons. On Wednesday, he became India's 318th Test player, replacing the injured Akash Deep, who is suffering from a groin injury. Kamboj, a right-handed batter and a right-handed medium pacer, first caught the attention of fans and selectors last season during the Ranji Trophy, when he took all 10 wickets in an innings for Haryana against Kerala — a rare achievement in Indian cricket. Since then, he has grown steadily. In 24 first-class matches so far, he has taken 79 wickets and also contributed useful runs down the order. His recent performance for India 'A' against the England Lions further strengthened his case. In a four-day game in Northampton last month, he picked up two wickets in each innings and remained unbeaten on 51 in the second innings, showing calmness and control with both bat and ball. Kamboj, who represented Mumbai Indians in 2025, was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, playing under MS Dhoni. He picked up eight wickets in eight matches, but Test cricket has always been his biggest goal.

'Can't Express My Feelings In Words': BCCI Welcomes Anshul Kamboj To Test Cricket

Anshul Kamboj made his Test debut for India against England at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Just a week ago, Anshul Kamboj was training in Karnal with the Dukes ball he brought with him from England. The world noticed him performing promisingly against the England Lions, but nobody had thought he would be making his Test debut in England in the coming days. As India ran out of bowling options due to injuries, they summoned Kamboj ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford and on Wednesday, he became the 318 th player to represent India in Test cricket. Meanwhile, the BCCI shared a video to announce Kamboj's entry to international cricket. The speedster could be seen sharing a laugh with senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, getting ready for the Test match in Manchester, getting his debut cap from former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta and also sharing his thoughts on representing the country in the longest format of the game. Anshul Kamboj grabbed headlines last season when he took all 10 wickets in an innings during a Ranji Trophy match for Haryana against Kerala in Rohtak—a rare feat in Indian domestic cricket. In total, he has played 24 first-class matches so far, picking up 79 wickets and scoring 486 runs. He was last seen in action for India A in a four-day game against the England Lions in Northampton from June 6 to 9, 2025. It was a solid all-round show from him—two wickets in each innings and an unbeaten 51 with the bat in the second, helping India A draw the match. Kamboj is part of the Chennai Super Kings setup in the IPL. He was bought for ₹3.40 crore in the mega auction last year. He made his debut for CSK against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11, 2025, in Chennai and picked up a wicket. He went on to play eight matches in the season, finishing with as many wickets under the leadership of MS Dhoni. In the past three years, Kamboj has steadily grown in domestic cricket. Along with the 79 wickets, he has a couple of five-wicket hauls and a highest score of 51\*—the one he made against the Lions. With both bat and ball, the young all-rounder has shown he's ready for bigger challenges. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 18:57 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Cricket gave him another chance': Sanjay Manjrekar says Karun Nair failed to grab opportunity after 'emotional story'

There have been quite a few murmurs of Karun Nair having possibly exhausted his last chance to have a decent run in the Indian Test team after he was dropped from the side for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Nair's stellar performance in domestic cricket last year prompted his return to the Indian Test team after eight years. However, in the three Tests he has played this series, Nair managed scores of 0, 20 playing at No.6 in the first Test. He was then moved up to his preferred No.3 spot after Sudharsan was dropped but then only put up scores of 31, 26, 40 and 14. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has now said that it is unfortunate that Nair couldn't grab the second chance he got in international cricket. 'It was an emotional story where he said, 'Cricket, give me another chance'. Cricket gave him another chance,' said Manjrekar on JioStar, referring to Nair's viral 'give me one more chance' tweet in December 2022. 'Unfortunately, he wasn't able to catch it. And, you know, we have Sai Sudarshan coming back. So that was the story. Good to see Sai Sudarshan back, because I thought he should have played the second test as well.' It had earlier looked like India would retain Karun for the Old Trafford Test, with Gill defending his the 33-year-old's poor returns in the pre-match press conference. 'We think Karun is batting well,' he said. 'The first match he didn't really play at his number (batted at 6). It's difficult when a player is making a comeback in a series like this, you know. But I don't think there's been any issue with his batting. Sometimes it's also about getting that click, you know. Once you're able to make your 50, then you're able to get back into your zone and get some big runs. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened for him so far.' Nair's performance in this series is a bit of a surprise considering he showed good form in the matches he played in England leading up to it. After a double century in Canterbury in a tour match, followed by a 40 in Northampton in the second pratice game, Karun got his chance to return to Test cricket after a long gap. In domestic cricket, Nair will return to Karnataka after a hiatus of three years for the upcoming domestic season after Vidarbha Cricket Association granted him the No Objection Certificate (NOC), reported PTI. Karun played a major role in Vidarbha's title-winning run in the 2024-25 season, scoring 863 runs at an average of 53 and he also made a hundred in the final against Kerala. He had a six-month streak where he scored 1,897 runs and nine centuries across formats for Vidarbha, concluding with a Ranji Trophy title.
