New Delhi: Six months into retirement from competitive cricket, one of India's finest wicketkeepers Wriddhiman Saha is all set to enter the coaching arena with Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) showing interest in hiring him as the head coach of U-23 state team.
Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy.
It is understood that former Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla will continue as the head coach of the senior team while former off-spinner Saurashis Lahiri will coach the U-19 team.

'The CAB brass will be zeroing in on all the candidates for various teams by next week. Obviously, Wriddhi has been sounded out and a final decision will be taken next week. Apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he is the biggest name from Bengal with 40 Tests,' a senior CAB source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
'His experience of playing top level cricket for so long will only help the Gen-Next of Bengal cricket. Wriddhi already runs a chain of coaching centres and he has been a very hands on coach for juniors. He is passionate about coaching. Hopefully, he will be ready,' the source said.
While there is not much precedence in Bengal cricket about players being drafted into the coaching system immediately after retirement but Saha's case is slightly different considering his stature in state cricket.
The Bengal U-23 side till last season was being coached by former India opener Pranab Roy, son of legendary late Pankaj Roy.
Many people in Bengal circuit believe that Saha is cut out to become a good coach. His experience with U-23 squad could prove to be handy if he joins any IPL team in future or as a specialist coach at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
It's Dahiya vs Sarandeep for Delhi men's Ranji coach job
Delhi Ranji team's head coach job is expected to be a two-way battle between former India players Sarandeep Singh and Vijay Dahiya, both of whom have applied for the post.
The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) is conducting interviews for support staffs, selectors for various age group (U-16, U-19, U-23) along with senior teams.
Sarandeep is the current Delhi head coach while Dahiya has handled the state team on a couple occasions in the past. The former India stumper is an assistant coach with Lucknow Super Giants and has also coached the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team.

'There are three candidates in the running. Sarandeep, who is our current head coach and Dahiya, who has extensive coaching experience have both appeared for interviews. The third strong candidate is former Delhi keeper Rajiv Vinayak,' a senior DDCA official privy to developments said.

India vs England 4th Test: N Jagadeesan called up after Rishabh Pant's injury at Old Trafford

With Rishabh Pant ruled out of the fifth Test against England and Ishan Kishan too nursing an injury, selectors have handed a maiden national call-up to Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan. The 29-year-old was informed by the selectors on Thursday afternoon to join the squad in England, and Jagadeesan now awaits the required visa to join the team at the earliest. When Pant was ruled out, Ishan was seen as the possible replacement, as he was even part of the County fixtures recently. But Ishan informed the selectors that he has an ankle injury and won't be able to recover in time or gain full match fitness. While KS Bharat was seen as an alternate option, it is understood that the selectors were not keen on going back to him after the Andhra wicketkeeper failed to grab his chances during the home Test series against England. As a result, Jagadeesan, who is next in line, has been added to the squad. The 29-year-old has been part of the India A set up in recent times. In 52 first-class matches, he has scored 10 centuries and 14 fifties at an average of 47.50 for a tally of 3373 runs. Primarily an opener, Jagadeesan has been among the consistent performers for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy and has a triple century to his name. Last season, with Pant still recovering, Jagadeesan was made part of the fringes of the Indian set-up with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar flying to Chennai to watch him in a Ranji fixture against Karnataka. Apart from being an aggressive batsman, Jagadeesan is impressive behind the stumps as well. Earlier in the day, BCCI confirmed in a statement that Pant wouldn't keep wickets in Manchester. 'Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,' the Board said. Pant did come out to bat to a standing ovation at Old Trafford after the fall of Shardul Thakur's wicket late in the first session. At Lord's, Pant had suffered a hand injury and Dhruv Jurel kept wickets. It is likely that Jurel will be the first-choice wicketkeeper to replace Pant in the final Test that will be played at The Oval in London, having been part of the squad since the Tour games.

Ex-CSK Wicketkeeper To Replace Rishabh Pant In Indian Team For 5th ENG Test: Report

Narayan Jagadeesan is a wicketkeeper-batter from Tamil Nadu. In 52 first-class matches played so far, he has scored 3373 runs. Former Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan is reportedly set to replace Rishabh Pant in India's squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Pant suffered a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23), and due to that, he will miss the fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England. The fifth Test is scheduled to take place at The Oval from July 31 to August 4. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Thursday (July 24), 'The right-handed keeper batter from Tamil Nadu is almost certain to be added to the squad. An announcement is expected soon." 'The selectors and the team management were looking at Ishan Kishan as a potential option and it later emerged that the 27-year-old keeper from Jharkhand is not available," the report added. Ishan, who last played a Test match for India in July 2023 against the West Indies in Port of Spain, according to a report in Times of India, is dealing with an ankle injury and has 10 stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty. 'Ishan has suffered an ankle injury and has ten stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty," a source tracking the development was quoted as saying by TOI on Thursday. 'Selectors did reach out to Ishan, but only on Thursday. His stitches have been removed, and he currently has a plaster on his left ankle," the source added. Jagadeesan has played a total of 52 first-class matches so far and has scored 3373 runs. His batting average is 47.50 and he has 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries to his credit. In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 674 runs in eight matches for Tamil Nadu. His batting average was 56.16 and he crossed the 100-run mark twice in addition to scoring five fifties. Among wicketkeeper-batter's only Vidarbha's Akshay Wadkar (722 runs at 45.12 in 10 matches) scored more runs than him. Jagadeesan's record in IPL In the cash-rich Indian Premier League, Jagadeesan has played a total of 13 matches for two teams—Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. In seven matches for CSK across two seasons, he scored 73 runs, and in six matches for KKR in IPL 2023, he amassed a total of 89 runs. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 17:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND U19 vs ENG U19: After ODI woes, Ayush Mhatre bounces back with twin tons in Youth Tests vs England

Ayush Mhatre (Screegrabs) Mumbai: "When you're failing repeatedly, it's important to pause and reflect: 'What did I do well when I was succeeding?'" For India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre, things weren't going smoothly, until he shrugged off his poor form with back-to-back centuries (102 & 32 in the first Youth Test at Beckenham, followed by 80 & 126 off 80 balls at Chelmsford) against England U-19. In the five-match Youth ODI series preceding the Tests, the 18-year-old reached double figures only once, with a sequence of 21, 0, 5 & 1. To make matters worse, he had to miss the final game of the series due to fever. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Coming off an impressive IPL debut—206 runs in six matches for MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mhatre struggled to adjust to English conditions. Unlike the flat IPL tracks where batters can swing freely, the seaming pitches in England demand patience and technique. It was clear that the teen was grappling with the transition. In contrast, his 14-year-old opening partner Vaibhav Suryavanshi lived up to the buzz surrounding him. The southpaw smashed a 31-ball 86, followed by a 52-ball hundred (143 off 78 balls) in the fourth Youth ODI at Worcester. Leading a team while struggling with form can be doubly challenging, especially for a teenager. But timely advice from his childhood coach, Prashant Shetty, helped Mhatre turn things around. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 11 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo "He was being too hard on himself. He was looking to carry his IPL form into this this tour, which doesn't always happen. Before going into the test, I asked him to watch the videos of his centuries in the Ranji Trophy last season. He had hit a fine hundred against Services at the Palam Ground on a seaming track in Delhi (116 off 149 balls out of Mumbai's first innings total of 288. Mumbai won by nine wickets and Mhatre was named as the 'Player of the Match'), so it wasn't like he couldn't bat on the seaming tracks, or he had any technical issue. As I said, it's just that he was trying too hard," Shetty told TOI. Since his first-class debut in October last year, Mhatre has scored 504 runs in nine matches, including two centuries and a fifty. In seven List A games, he already has 458 runs with two tons. Poll What do you think was the key to Ayush Mhatre's turnaround in form? Timely advice from his coach Adjusting to seaming pitches His previous success in domestic cricket Support from teammates "He and Suryavanshi are the only ones with first-class experience in the side. That certainly helps. Perhaps, he needed a change in format. The fact that he has done well in the red-ball format before gave him the confidence that he can bounce back and do well. He told me that he was in better rhythm while batting in the pre-match nets at Beckenham," Shetty said. Shetty also dismissed the idea that captaincy pressure affected Mhatre's batting. 'I asked him directly, and he said he felt no pressure from the role. At the junior level, most decisions are taken by the coach. I had also advised him to separate his captaincy from his batting.' When Mhatre was appointed captain for the England tour, Mumbai head coach Omkar Salvi had told this paper: "Ayush is a lovely kid who's got a very calm head on his shoulders. Being around him in the dressing room gave me the feeling that he is someone who can definitely be a leader. He's very confident of himself and also a self-assured team man and that's going to keep this India Under-19 team in good stead. I wish him all the best and I'm sure he has many more leadership roles that beckons him in the near future. " Following his return from England, Mhatre's next assignment will be the Duleep Trophy in September, which will mark the start of the 2025-26 domestic season. This time, the tournament will be played on a zonal basis. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
