Carrie Bickmore announces major career move as she make surprise return to TV in star-studded show

is making a surprise return to television - but not in the way fans might expect. The former Project host is lending her voice to a brand new children's animated series spearheaded by none other than comedian and author Andy Lee, who's bringing his wildly successful book franchise Do Not Open This Book to life. The new show, cheekily titled Do Not Watch This Show, is set to premiere on the ABC and will see a slew of familiar Aussie stars step into colourful and quirky roles. Carrie, will join the likes of Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes, Chrissie Swan, Tony Armstrong, Hamish Blake and Have You Been Paying Attention? favourite Glenn Robbins. The series will follow the chaotic antics of blue monster Wizz, voiced by Andy himself, across 12 short 11-minute episodes designed to keep young kids giggling - and their parents guessing who's behind the voices. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'I'm a bit of a control freak,' Andy told Yahoo Lifestyle of his new series before revealing he's been working on the project since 2019. 'We produced this with my company Radio Karate, which has been awesome. The casting was great fun - there were a bunch of phone calls and favours.' And those favours certainly paid off, with a who's-who of Aussie TV and radio personalities jumping on board. Comedian Denise Scott plays a tortoise, Joel Creasey is a sassy lime, Kiwi comic Kura Forrester voices a kiwi bird, while Hughesy is stepping into the role of a goblin - naturally. 'Hughesy plays Goblin and I just love the idea that, hopefully, if we can sell this around the world, that Hughesy's voice will be synonymous with a goblin,' Andy joked. Creasey's role also raised eyebrows. 'There aren't too many flamboyant characters in kids' TV like the way Joel Creasey has owned Lime,' Andy added. Carrie's cameo in the series marks her first major TV appearance since leaving The Project. The move also reunites her with longtime friends and former co-hosts in a fresh new way - swapping news bulletins and talk panels for animated mischief and monster-filled mayhem. Carrie is meanwhile making headlines for her rumoured romance with radio co-star Tommy Little. The couple have gone on another holiday together amid persistent rumours of a romance between the radio co-hosts. This time they have travelled to Hayman Island, which is known to be perfect for couples seeking a romantic holiday. However, the pair have been joined by their Carrie & Tommy show colleagues at the InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef, for what appears to be a work trip. Carrie shared a reel of photos from the idyllic getaway, including one where she sizzles in a hot pink patterned bikini. She also turned up the heat in an animal print low-cut dress for dinner at the hotel's restaurant. The pair, who have long been the subject of romance rumours thanks to their on-air chemistry and flirty social media exchanges, have been in each other's pockets lately. They recently returned from South Africa, where they both competed in the Big 5 Marathon to raise money for Carrie's Beanies 4 Brain Cancer charity. Carrie recently showed her support for Tommy's career when she stepped out at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to cheer him on during one of his shows.

Why Andy Lee's Do Not Watch This Show is his biggest creative challenge yet

Andy Lee is no stranger to the media sphere, with top-rating projects across TV, radio, podcasting and writing. But when it came to turning his best-selling kids' book into a TV show for the ABC, it was a process unlike anything he had experienced. So, what made it so challenging? "Long, it's so long [to make]!" Lee said, laughing. "I went into a sound booth some time in March last year and, finally, people can see what happened with it when [the show airs] in July this year. "To give you perspective, the first book took 40 minutes [to write] on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne. "[The show] has been quite the process, but I've loved it, I've absolutely loved it." For anyone new to the Do Not Open This Book series, Lee wrote and released the first book for his nephew, George, as a birthday present in 2016. He's since written 10 more, with the next book set to be released before the end of the year. The TV adaptation, Do Not Watch This Show, sees the book's main character, a blue monster named Wizz (voiced by Lee), brought to life. He takes viewers on fantastical journeys with life lessons along the way, all while imploring them not to watch any further. With him on screen are his friends Douglas (also voiced by Lee), Tortoise (Denise Scott), Lime (Joel Creasey), Kiwi (Kura Forrester) and Goblin (Dave Hughes). As well as the main cast, expect cameos from other notable Aussie voices, including: "David Hughes being Goblin I find the most fun because I think Hughesy's natural voice does sound like a goblin," Lee joked. "It was funny when he came in to do it, he was like 'So mate what voice do you want?' and I was like 'Oh man, I want your voice. You know, I didn't hire you because you're an amazing character actor — all due respect — I want Hughesy'. "I love the idea of this show [going] international, that Hughesy will be the voice of the goblin next door that's constantly feuding with Wizz." Lee said part of the extra time it took to make the show was crafting hand-drawn expressions or movements for the characters. While the animation used 3D technology to produce Wizz and friends' basic movements, any adjustments Lee or the team wanted were made by hand by illustrator Heath McKenzie. "The amount of drawings has been quite incredible," Lee said. "To give you an idea of just Wizz's expressions, I think we ended up with 60 mouth shapes." Retaining creative control was a priority for Lee, and was part of the reason talks with a Hollywood studio for the show didn't come to fruition. But Lee himself says being so deeply involved in the show's creation was both a blessing and a curse. "The strange thing about making an animation versus a live action is we used to go out and film something and we'd get back into the edit and I'd go 'Oh do we have a shot of that? Oh no, we don't, OK well that's all it is,'" he said. "Now I sit in the edit and go '[It] would've been good if he kind of fell from the ceiling here' and the editor goes 'OK, well let's just draw that in.' "The problem is it's endless, you could keep changing things. "That was my big learning: 'OK, there has to be a point where you can't creatively keep changing it because otherwise this thing will never get finished.'" Given the effort it's taken to bring Wizz to life on the screen, is Lee nervous about sharing the show with the world? "Not until you said that," he joked. "No, not really. I suppose I've had the benefit of making them and you watch them back and ... watch every frame and ponder it. While Lee says he's not nervous for the show's release, he admits his measure of success has "never been a numbers" game. "As I get slightly older — gosh that's an old person thing to say — it's certainly more about how much fun you have," he said. "It's so hard when you release something, you never know how it's going to go and there's so many things that can dictate how something resonates. "It's important not to hang too much on the results because that would be a pretty nerve-wracking game." Stream Do Not Watch This Show free on ABC iview.

The beloved screen star, 69, first revealed her heartbreaking battle with the disease in 2023 after six months of privately undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Then last year, she revealed she had finally been given the all clear from doctors after a total of 17 months of 'non-stop' treatment. During Monday's episode of The Project, Scott spoke openly about her difficult cancer journey. Denise Scott made her TV comeback on Monday night's episode of The Project . Picture: Channel 10 The comedian, who was undergoing treatment while filming the first series of Mother & Son, confessed that an on-set mishap almost caused producers to call her an ambulance over fears she was experiencing chemo complications. 'It was the worst time. I was on a really brutal chemotherapy. Every week. And so, yeah, it wasn't the best of times,' she told host Sarah Harris, who asked if filming the show while on chemo had been a welcome distraction. 'I'd started chemo in Melbourne and then moved to Sydney to start filming Mother & Son and continued my treatment there. And the first day of shooting everyone is nervous, and I'm anxious because chemo also really ups the psychological side of things. So I rock up first time, first time I've been in a sitcom, I'm the lead and I'm so scared. It's a really hot day, and this young runner has driven me to set. And I'm so nervous that I guzzle down a bottle of water and then I think 'What have I just drunk?'. It wasn't water. It was hand sanitiser that had liquefied in the Sydney heat!' Scott regularly kept fans updated with her cancer journey while she was undergoing treatment. Picture: Facebook. Scott said that her panicked reaction to realising what she'd just chucked down her throat sparked chaos among producers on-set who feared something terrible was wrong. 'And they think 'Right! Filming stop! Get the ambulance for Denise it's cancer related!' And I'm trying to speak while [gestures at her mouth]. Anyway, that stuff is like 95% alcohol, I was p*ssed out of my mind for the whole of the first day shoot. If you look at the first scenes of the first series of Mother & Son, I'm completely blitzed.' Meanwhile, on Monday night Scott also made her welcome return to Have You Been Paying Attention where she was briefly quizzed about her health struggles and how it felt to be back working. 'Well, I'm not dead. Isn't that great news?' she told her co-stars before revealing that she was grateful to have been able to film the second series of Mother & Son while not undergoing chemo again. Beloved comedian Denise Scott reveals she was rushed to hospital after drinking HAND SANITISER amid battle with 'aggressive' cancer

Denise Scott has revealed how she accidentally drank hand sanitiser on the set of her ABC sitcom, Mother And Son. The beloved Australian comedian, 70, who was nominated for a Logie Award for her lead role in the show last year, said the mishap saw her rushed to hospital. Appearing on The Project on Monday night, Denise explained how she mistook the substance for water. 'I rock up,first time I've been in a sitcom, I'm the lead, I'm so scared' she began the story. 'And it's a really hot day, and this young runner has driven me to set, and I was so nervous that I pulled the water, I'm like guzzling. Then I think, "What have I just drunk?"' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'It wasn't water. It was hand sanitiser! It had liquefied in the Sydney heat.' Denise said the crew rushed to get her medical attention after the unfortunate episode. 'They think, "Right, that's it. Filming's stopped. Get the ambulance for Denise. It's cancer-related." I'm choking' she said. 'Anyway, that stuff is like 95 or 96 percent proof. I was out of my mind the whole day.' Denise recovered from the mishap, and is also in recovery following an intense 17 months of breast cancer treatment amid her battle with an 'aggressive' form of the disease. Denise was diagnosed with cancer near the start of 2023 and revealed the shock news publicly shortly after. She detailed her 'pretty much non-stop' 17 months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments to fight the 'particularly aggressive' form of breast cancer. Denise took to Facebook to reveal that she had undergone her last day of chemotherapy after first starting the treatment back in February 2023. 'Yesterday was my last day of chemo. I've been having treatment for breast cancer HER2 positive pretty much non-stop for 17 months,' she shared alongside a picture of herself in hospital. The TV star went on to detail the months-long stints of chemotherapy and other treatments she has undergone over the past year and a half amid her cancer battle. She went on: 'Feb 2023-May 2023 Chemo, June 2023 lumpectomy and removal of lymph nodes from right arm pit, August 2023-Sept 2023 Daily Radiation sessions for 6 weeks, (and) Aug 2023- May 2024 9 more months of Chemo.' Denise confirmed that her latest mammogram was 'clear' as she thanked her fans for their support amid the difficult time. 'For now, at least, the treatment has done its job,' she penned. 'Latest mammogram was clear. I lost all my hair (in) the first round of chemo, then got these thin white, quite frankly disappointing, tufts grow in (the) second round - different sort of chemo. 'So many people to thank and acknowledge. But for now I'll leave it there. Thank you for yr lovely messages.' (sic) The media personality and former star of The Project first spoke about her cancer diagnosis to The Australian Women's Weekly. She told how she was first diagnosed with breast cancer while working on the Mother and Son reboot, but bravely carried on shooting the project. 'I do console myself that at least I've lived a full life that I'm happy with,' Denise told the publication. 'But I don't want to go yet. There are things I want to do.' Denise said she was leaning on her partner John Lane for support, adding: 'The prognosis has continued to be good, and there's a lot of hope.' Denise met John when they performed together as clowns on a theatre production in Albury, New South Wales. The couple have been together for more than 40 years but they never got married, with Denise previously saying it wasn't something either of them focused on. Denise stars in the ABC reboot of the series Mother And Son, which famously had Ruth Cracknell in the role of Maggie Beare. Considered one of the greatest of all home made classics, Mother & Son debuted on the ABC in 1984. The iconic sitcom starred Gary McDonald as a bewildered adult son trying to cope with his ageing mother, played by the late Cracknell. In the re-boot, comedian Matt Okine now plays Arthur, who moves in to look after the recently widowed Maggie (Scott), who may or may not have burnt down the kitchen in the family home. As in the original, the reboot sees Maggie run rings around her well-meaning family. Also featured in the cast of the re-boot are Angela Nica Sullen who plays Arthur's older sister Robbie and Fat Pizza's Jean Kittson. Tiriel Mora from the 90s classic comedy Frontline also stars along with Virginia Gay from Winner and Losers and Catherine Văn-Davies (The Twelve). The original show won over audiences for its funny and poignant depiction of the challenges adult children often face when dealing with an ageing parent who suffers from 'memory loss' (actually, dementia). Maggie (Cracknell) became a fan favourite as she seemed to spend most of her waking hours 'out smarting' everyone, especially Arthur (McDonald), who was left to wonder just how 'out of it' she really might be.
