UP govt deploys advanced technologies to curb illegal mining

Lucknow, Jul 17 (PTI) To curb illegal mining and transportation, the Uttar Pradesh government is deploying advanced technologies under the Integrated Mining Surveillance System (IMSS), a release said on Thursday. Mining activities are already being monitored through drones, geo-fencing, RFID tags, and AI-powered check gates. Now, the state is set to introduce 'Weigh-In-Motion' (WIM) technology to accurately track vehicle overloading. According to the official release, the Department of Geology and Mining has reinforced surveillance with multiple tech-driven interventions, including geo-fencing of mining zones, camera-equipped weighbridges, and RFID tagging of transport vehicles. Additionally, 57 unmanned IoT and AI-based check gates have been installed across 25 districts, all integrated with the directorate's command centre. The department has also sought the cooperation of the Transport Commissioner to facilitate the installation of WIM systems to strengthen control over illegal mining and transportation. Moreover, to enhance digital transparency in mining services, the state government has initiated the integration of its portal with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's 'Parivesh' portal. This will streamline the monitoring of environmental clearance certificates and accelerate enforcement actions in mining regions, the statement added. Drones, geo-fencing, RFID tags for vehicles: Govt taps technology to curb illegal mining

To curb illegal mining and transportation, the state government is deploying advanced technologies under the Integrated Mining Surveillance System (IMSS). Mining activities are being monitored through drones, geo-fencing, RFID tags, and AI-powered check gates, officials said in a statement on Thursday. Now, the state is set to introduce 'Weigh-In-Motion' (WIM) technology to accurately track vehicle overloading, promising faster operations and enhanced accuracy. The Department of Geology and Mining has reinforced surveillance with multiple tech-driven interventions, including geo-fencing of mining zones, camera-equipped weighbridges, and RFID tagging of transport vehicles. Also, 57 unmanned IoT and AI-based check gates have been installed across 25 districts, all integrated with the directorate's command centre. The department has also sought the cooperation of the Transport Commissioner to facilitate the installation of WIM systems to strengthen control over illegal mining and transportation, said the statement. The government is encouraging the use of drones for detailed surveys and real-time monitoring of mining areas. Institutions such as UP Electronics, UPDESCO and Shreetron India Ltd. have been invited to submit technical and financial proposals to aid this initiative. The drone technology is expected to enable precise tracking and swift action against illegal mining activities, the statement said. To enhance digital transparency in mining services, the state government has initiated the integration of its portal with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's 'Parivesh' portal. This will streamline the monitoring of environmental clearance certificates and accelerate enforcement actions in mining regions. Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) is a modern technology that measures the weight of heavy vehicles, such as mining trucks or freight carriers, while they are moving. This system uses sensors embedded in the road to record the vehicle's weight, speed, and other data without stopping the vehicle. WIM saves time, improves efficiency and enhances road safety. In industries like mining, it helps prevent overloading, ensures compliance with rules, and supports better decision-making based on real-time data. The system instantly sends collected data for analysis, allowing operators to access information immediately. It helps reduce costs and minimizes environmental impact by promoting safer and more regulated transport operations.

Fresh drone survey of stone quarries in Madurai ordered, second this year

MADURAI: The district administration has recently directed the Department of Geology and Mining to conduct a drone survey of all 16 stone quarries, including the Vanathi Karadu area, in Madurai taluk. This is the second drone survey being held in the district. In January, a survey was held on two quarries in Vadipatti, and Rs 15 crore penalty was imposed on the owners after violations were found out. Sources said the order for the second drone survey was issued last week based on complaints lodged by residents of Katchaikatti village that dust from quarries was causing health issues last year. TNIE published a report on the issue on December 5, 2024. The report 'Animal overpass project Wavuthamalai threatened by quarrying activities' highlighted that quarrying activities were being undertaken close to the site where NHAI is constructing Tamil Nadu's first animal overpass in the Wavuthamalai range. Based on this, a team of officials conducted an inspection and has now ordered a drone survey in these quarries. On request of anonymity, an official from the district administration said a major part of Vanathikaradu in Wavuthamalai has been destroyed by quarry activities. 'We have come to know that the karadu has been converted into a road. I took Google images of how this place's vegetation was ten years ago and compared them with recent images to get a clear picture of how the kardu has been destroyed by mining activities. It seems the entire area is surrounded by karadu, excessive mining happening in Vadipatti taluk,' he said. The district administration has sent a letter to the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) recommending closure of a few quarries that are allegedly involved in violations. Further course of action will be taken after receiving the drone survey report, the official added.
