Aamir Khan overstepped his boundaries and complained to Mahesh Bhatt about Anupam Kher's acting: ‘Mere andar ka NSD ka gold medalist jaag gaya'

Actor Anupam Kher looked back on an altercation that he had with Aamir Khan on the set of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, the 1993 film they worked on together, with director Mahesh Bhatt at the helm. The film also starred Pooja Bhatt, and was released when Aamir was on the cusp of superstardom. In a recent interview, Anupam suggested that Aamir stepped out of line when he complained about his performance to Bhatt, 'even though he was just an actor' on the film. Bhatt didn't keep the complaint to himself, which further fuelled tension on set. This was when Anupam unleashed his inner drama school gold medalist, and rejected Aamir's suggestion. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, he said, 'He wasn't upset with me, he disliked my interpretation of the climax scene. I play a man who tells his daughter to abandon her to-be husband and run away from the 'mandap'. In my imagination, only a man who is not in his senses would make such a suggestion, so I decided to play the scene comedically. Aamir didn't like it, apparently. So, he went and complained to Bhatt saab even though he was just an actor like me.' Also read – 'Kirron Kher could not conceive, when she did…': Anupam Kher says he feels a void as he never had kids, is 'fine' with stepson Sikander Anupam continued, 'Bhatt saab told me what Aamir had said, and that's when mere andar ka National School of Drama ka gold medalist jaag gaya (my inner drama school gold medalist was unleashed). I asked Bhatt saab, 'You're okay with my performance?' He said he is, so I told him, 'Then let's continue as we were'.' In the same interview, he also spoke about an incident at a press conference, where he was heard telling Bhatt to leave. Anupam explained that there can never be any differences between them, because he considers Bhatt to be a father figure. He said that Bhatt was hungry, and that he was merely telling him to go get lunch. 'He is too important for me to disrespect him like that,' he said. In an earlier interview with Times Now, Anupam had spoken about the altercation, adding that Aamir was upset with him for the entire duration of the shoot. 'I was fully ready to portray it, but Aamir complained to Mahesh Bhatt saab about my interpretation. He found it wrong and different. Bhatt saab added fuel to the matter and told me about Aamir's comment. I used an English phrase for Aamir Khan to shut him down,' he said, adding, 'Aamir was upset with me throughout the film. He was at that stage of becoming Aamir Khan, which he wanted to become. All my love for him.'

Deepak Tijori shares how he replaced Milind Soman in Aamir Khan's Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar: '75 percent film shoot bhi hogaye thi'

Deepak Tijori unexpectedly landed the role of Shekhar Malhotra in 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar,' replacing Milind Soman after 75% of the film was shot. Initially rejected, Tijori's entry, championed by Aamir Khan, revived the shelved project after director Mansoor Khan faced setbacks. Tijori's addition, along with real Rajput boys, reignited production, marking a serendipitous turn in his career. Deepak Tijori recently shared how he unexpectedly stepped into the iconic role of Shekhar Malhotra in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, replacing Milind Soman after nearly 75 percent of the film had already been shot. From being initially rejected for the part to becoming a key reason the shelved film bounced back into production, Tijori's story is one of missed chances, serendipity, and second innings that turned into silver screen magic. In a chat with Bollywood Bubble, Deepak revealed that Milind Soman was originally cast as Shekhar Malhotra in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Though Deepak had auditioned for the role, director Mansoor Khan initially didn't select him. He admitted feeling upset at the time, as he believed his performance was strong. However, he soon moved on and began working on other films — eventually landing Aashiqui, which became a turning point in his career. Later, during a brief production break in Ooty while Mahesh Bhatt was shooting Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, fate took an unexpected turn. He also shared that by the time Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was in production, nearly 75% of the film had already been shot with Milind Soman in the role of Shekhar Malhotra. At the time, Deepak was unaware of any developments or issues on set, even though there were murmurs of problems. Since he wasn't involved in the project, he chose to stay focused on his own career — having already bagged Aashiqui and later Sadak, both offered by Mahesh Bhatt. Deepak recalled being in a celebratory phase when Bhatt unexpectedly called him one evening and asked him to drop by his house. For Deepak, who was used to such spontaneous invites from the filmmaker, it seemed routine — until Bhatt asked him what he was doing the next day, hinting at something significant in the works. The actor went on to reveal that Mahesh Bhatt had called him over one evening and unexpectedly told him to go meet Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar director Mansoor Khan. Bhatt informed him that Aamir Khan specifically wanted Tijori for the role of Shekhar Malhotra. Initially, Deepak hesitated, but Bhatt, in his usual passionate style, insisted he take the meeting. Deepak then met Mansoor and veteran producer Nasir Hussain. During the conversation, Nasir sahab simply told him that the role was his now. Deepak respectfully agreed, though he asked one lingering question — whether the actor being replaced was aware of the decision. Nasir replied that everything had already been taken care of. He also shared a surprising revelation he learned decades after working on Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. During a recent conversation with Aamir Khan and director Mansoor Khan, he discovered that the film had actually been shelved at one point. Mansoor had fallen into a deep depression, believing he had wasted his father's money and failed the project. It was only after Deepak came on board—along with the real-life Rajput boys featured in the film—that production resumed. Reflecting on this, Deepak said he has no regrets about how his career has unfolded and remains optimistic about the future.

Bhatt sahab added fuel to the matter and told me about Aamir's comment."advertisementHe further shared how he responded to the criticism, saying, 'I am the gold medallist from the National School of Drama. Anupam Kher recalls shutting down Aamir Khan on Dil He Ke Manta Nahin sets ‘with an English phrase': ‘He complained to Mahesh Bhatt'

Anupam Kher and Aamir Khan have most famously worked in three films — Indra Kumar's Dil (1990), Yash Chopra's Parampara (1993), and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991). At the time of filming the Mahesh Bhatt directorial, Aamir was on the cusp of becoming a superstar, having already delivered hits like Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and Dil. Kher feels that's probably why Aamir had a disagreement with him on the sets of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, while filming the climax. 'In the climax of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, the father tells his daughter to run away from the wedding. The moment was very exaggerated,' recalled Kher, who played Seth Dharamchand, father to the bride, played by Pooja Bhatt. 'I was fully ready to portray it, but Aamir Khan complained to Mahesh Bhatt saab about my interpretation. He found it wrong and different. Bhatt saab added fuel to the matter and told me about Aamir's comment. I used an English phrase for Aamir Khan to shut him down,' added Kher, who wanted to remind Aamir he's a gold medallist from the National School of Drama, unlike Aamir who isn't a trained actor. 'Aamir was upset with me throughout the film. He was at that stage of becoming Aamir Khan, which he wanted to become. All my love for him,' said Kher. Aamir gained more popularity right after Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin with Mansoor's 1994 cult college caper Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar the following year. Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin marked the first time Aamir worked with Mahesh Bhatt. They followed it up with the 1993 romantic comedy Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. Meanwhile, Bhatt gave Kher his big break in Bollywood with his 1984 relationship drama Saaransh. Post that, they collaborated for Janam (1985), Kaash (1987), Thikana (1987), Kabzaa (1988), Daddy (1989), Awaargi (1990), Gumrah (1993), Tadipaar (1993), Papa Kahte Hain (1996), and Chaahat (1996). In a new, exclusive interview with SCREEN, Kher claimed that seasoned actors like him and Neena Gupta can perform even on their feet because of their education at NSD and experience in theatre. 'Without realizing, we've worked like theatre in this film (Metro… In Dino). Even in the case of Shiv Shastri Balboa, we did that. That film can be adapted into a very good play. So that's the advantage of being experienced, educated actors. We can incorporate our experiences into these films which we probably can't in others,' said Kher.
