TAWAU: The public is urged to lodge a police report if they are harassed, threatened or humiliated through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on social media. The call comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of AI-generated images or videos to bully, intimidate or defame individuals online. Authorities are also concerned that political supporters may resort to AI manipulation on social media as the 17th State Election (PRN) approaches. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police are aware of these emerging threats and are closely monitoring any misuse of technology that could disrupt public order. 'We are aware that irresponsible parties now have various tools, including AI, which can be used to humiliate or provoke others. 'We advise victims to report such incidents to the police,' he said. He said the District Criminal Investigation Division and Commercial Crime Investigation Division are actively monitoring such activity. Jasmin said the existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, may be used to take action, particularly in cases involving criminal threats. He also advised social media users to be mindful of their conduct online, just as they would in public, to maintain peace and safety. On preparations for the coming state election, Jasmin said his team has already begun early planning, including personnel readiness and identifying key needs to ensure maximum security throughout the process. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Sunday, July 13, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 13, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin TAWAU: A housewife has been arrested for allegedly threatening to smash a female hairdresser's head and seize her mobile phone. She was believed to have made the threat via a social media messaging application. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 38-year-old local was detained at Kampung Hidayat Batu 4, Jalan Apas, here, at 2.45pm on Friday. 'A hairdresser lodged a complaint on Jan 3, last year, claiming she received a threatening message via WhatsApp,' he said, Saturday. Jasmin said the arrest was made by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND) in front of an unnumbered house, where a mobile phone was also confiscated. According to the police report, the suspect had allegedly sent a message stating, 'Di mana-mana aku jumpa binimu, aku kasi pecah kepalanya (Wherever I see your wife, I'll smash her head).' 'The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation through online communication, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison upon conviction,' said Jasmin. In a separate case, police arrested a local youth suspected of trespassing into a home and attempting to assault a woman in her rented room in town last Sunday. Jasmin said the 20-year-old suspect was apprehended by the Strike Team from Tawau Police Station at 10.15pm on Thursday at a car park in the town area. The arrest followed a police report lodged by the alleged victim, a 25-year-old female tenant who was traumatised and concerned for her safety. 'According to the complainant, the incident occurred while she was asleep in her room when the suspect allegedly broke in, covered her mouth and attempted to rob her. 'She was startled by the suspect's actions and immediately woke up, screamed and struggled, managing to push the door open, which caused the suspect to be thrown out of the room,' he said. Initial investigations revealed that the victim did not suffer any losses or have any valuables stolen, as her swift reaction thwarted the suspect's intentions. Jasmin added that police reviewed CCTV footage and carried out intelligence work, which led to the suspect's arrest. A cap, sling bag and a pair of slippers believed to have been used by the suspect were also seized. The case is being investigated under Section 448 of the Penal Code for house trespass. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
