TAWAU: A man believed to have been driving recklessly and flashing an obscene gesture at other road users, recently, at the Jalan Kubota Batu 3 Jalan Apas junction here, was arrested last Saturday. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin said the 32-year-old suspect was detained at around 2.50pm by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) in front of a lodging house in Tawau town. 'The incident was reported to have occurred last Wednesday when the victim, a female technician driving a Perodua Ativa along Jalan Apas, was startled by a Perodua Myvi that shot out from a junction recklessly,' he said on Sunday. Jasmin said the situation forced the victim to slam on her brakes and honk as a warning. However, the suspect then exited his vehicle. According to him, the suspect made an obscene gesture and even issued verbal challenges to fight, leaving the victim distressed and frightened which led her to lodge a report. 'Police investigations revealed that the suspect has six prior criminal records involving offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act, including under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a), recorded in Papar, Kuala Lumpur, and Tawau,' he said. Jasmin added that the case is now being investigated under Section 279 of the Penal Code for driving recklessly and endangering other road users. He also advised the public to always obey traffic laws and keep their emotions in check when faced with tense situations on the road. 'Any aggressive act or threat toward other road users not only endangers safety but may also lead to legal action. 'We also urge the public to report any suspicious behaviour or dangerous situations to the police for immediate action,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police's Special Branch holds anti-terrorism exhibition

BATU KAWAN: The police have brought an anti-terrorism exhibition to the National Unity Week at the Batu Kawan Stadium grounds, aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of involvement in terrorist activities. Federal police Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) staff officer ACP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz said the exhibition is also intended to enhance public understanding of terrorism threats and the importance of community cooperation in countering such activities. "We are bringing the exhibition closer to the public to clearly explain what terrorism and extremism are, so people can understand and avoid involvement in such activities, which not only harm individuals but also the nation," he told Bernama at the event. He said that while the exhibition is rarely held, it was featured at the Batu Kawan SMP this time to showcase various items to the public, including homemade bombs made by terrorist groups, terrorism-related books and terrorist passports. The Unity Week, held at Batu Kawan Stadium, Penang, will run from July 17 to 20 and feature 35 engaging activities for visitors. Among the highlights of the exhibition, Ridzuan said, are displays of seized items used in terrorist activities, visual presentations of high-profile arrest operations and interactive sessions with E8 officers who explain the processes of detecting and monitoring extremist elements. Through the exhibition, police aim to educate the public on the early signs of involvement in terrorism, while stressing the vital role of public awareness in curbing the spread of extremism and radical ideologies. "Previously, some Malaysians were influenced by foreign terrorist groups, such as those operating in Syria. "However, in recent times, we have observed a shift towards domestic terrorism. "That is why we are presenting this exhibition, to prevent, especially young people, from falling prey to terrorist groups, as they are highly exposed to such content through social media. "These groups actively recruit through platforms like Telegram," he said. Ridzuan described the exhibition as part of a 'prevention through education' approach, targeting all segments of society, particularly youth and students. "We cannot rely on enforcement alone. "The public must be educated on how radical ideologies operate and how they recruit victims, particularly through social media platforms. "We want to make it clear that terrorism is a real and present threat, not merely a narrative meant to ignite fear," he said. – Bernama

PDRM anti-terrorism exhibition at Batu Kawan National Unity Week

BATU KAWAN: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is hosting an anti-terrorism exhibition at the National Unity Week (SMP) in Batu Kawan Stadium, aiming to educate the public on the dangers of terrorist activities. The event, running from July 17 to 20, features 35 activities, including displays of seized terrorist items and interactive sessions with counter-terrorism officers. Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) staff officer ACP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz highlighted the exhibition's role in clarifying terrorism and extremism for the public. 'We are bringing the exhibition closer to the people so they understand and avoid involvement in such activities, which harm both individuals and the nation,' he told Bernama. The exhibition includes homemade bombs, terrorism-related books, and confiscated passports used by terrorist groups. Ridzuan noted that while foreign terrorist influences have declined, domestic threats remain a concern. 'We are seeing a shift towards domestic terrorism, making public awareness crucial,' he said. Police aim to educate visitors on early signs of radicalisation, particularly among youth exposed to extremist content online. 'Terrorist groups actively recruit through platforms like Telegram. Prevention through education is key,' Ridzuan added. The exhibition also features high-profile arrest operations and insights into counter-terrorism efforts. Ridzuan stressed that enforcement alone is insufficient. 'The public must understand how radical ideologies operate to prevent recruitment,' he said. - Bernama
