Oakland's public safety issues are tied to ongoing budget crisis, report says

For nearly a decade, Osvaldo Sanchez has weathered break-in after break-in at his restaurant, Agave Uptown, in Oakland. Between 2016 and 2024, the business has been targeted 22 times. "We changed the locks," Sanchez said, noting it's been about a year since the last incident. "But it's not because crime has changed, it's because we changed the locks." Each break-in costs Sanchez thousands of dollars, replacing shattered windows and doors, not to mention the hit to customer traffic and morale. Now, a new report by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute points to a deeper problem: Oakland's public safety issues are directly tied to its ongoing budget crisis. "Oakland can't get out of its budget crisis if it doesn't first solve its public safety crisis," said Jeff Bellisario, executive director of the Bay Area Council and one of the report's authors. According to Bellisario, the underfunding of the Oakland Police Department has ripple effects far beyond law enforcement. "What that poll found was more than half of Oakland residents are actually leaving the city to do their shopping," he explained. "Nearly three-quarters of East Bay residents say they avoid Oakland's restaurants, bars, and entertainment options because they don't feel safe." The report outlines 13 recommendations, including loosening certain police oversight restrictions and increasing funding for the Oakland Police Department, steps that Sanchez believes could protect small businesses like his. "If you made it more secure on the streets, more police outside, I think that's also going to help a little bit in terms of robberies," Sanchez said. "More secure, you know, more secure for the city." For Sanchez, that change can't come soon enough.

Is M. Night Shyamalan starting to film his RI movie? Film crews spotted in Warren June 18.

WARREN − M. Night Shyamalan is starting filming of his supernatural romantic thriller "Remain" in Warren on Wednesday, June 18. Or so says the owner of Stingy Alley, a bar on Main Street. In an Instagram post, the bar is inviting patrons to perhaps witness some Hollywood magic. And, film crews were spotted in Warren on the morning of June 18. The first day of filming for the Shyamalan film started at the Coffee Depot in Warren at the corner of Jefferson and Main streets. The Warren business posted a message on social media announcing they'd be closed on June 18th for "a private event." The coffee shop has windows that look out on the street, forcing the film to bring in production cars that are used as set dressing. This also means that the town has to periodically shut down traffic. Filming for the Shyamalan movie is expected to continue throughout the East Bay over the next several days. "Remain" stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor and Ashley Walters. It is expected to be release in October 2026 by Warner Bros. S.F. comedian calls Ellen DeGeneres ‘a mean girl' after detailing strained relationship

Margaret Cho recently opened up about long-running tensions with fellow comic Ellen DeGeneres, describing a strained dynamic that dates back to their early days in stand-up during the 1980s. 'Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career,' the San Francisco-born comedian revealed during an appearance on ' The Kelly Mantle Show ' podcast. 'She was like a mean girl.' DeGeneres, who rose to mainstream fame for her on-screen generosity and positivity on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' recently retired from the public eye after being accused of fostering a toxic workplace and mistreating staff. Her Primetime Emmy Award-winning talk show was canceled in May 2022 after 19 seasons, following an internal review and departure of several producers. Cho, reflecting on her own experiences, now confirms those reports weren't just tabloid drama. 'I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs and way before her big fame. So then later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she acted like we just met and I'm like, 'Bitch, what?'' Cho recalled during the episode, which was released on Wednesday, June 18. 'Like, that's weird. We go way back. It's so creepy and weird.' Cho also said she learned from a friend, a producer on 'The Ellen DeGeneres' show, that David Bowie had praised her and her fashion choices during an appearance on the show, but that moment never aired because DeGeneres allegedly had it removed from the final edit. 'She cut it out of the show, which made me so mad,' Cho said. 'I don't know if it was personal. Maybe it was for time. But still, I'm going to take it personally.' 'I think she always had kind of negative feelings towards me because her girlfriends and wives always liked me,' Cho, who identifies as queer, said. Before stepping out of the spotlight entirely, DeGeneres set out on a farewell stand-up tour last year, which included several Bay Area dates. During the shows, the comic reflected on being labeled the 'most hated person in America' and spoke candidly about how 'devastating' it was to fall so sharply from public favor. But Cho says 'the public perception is more true' than DeGeneres's carefully crafted image ever was. For her part, Cho has gone on to have a successful comedy and acting career, and has recently expanded her talents. In January, she smashed her ' Celebrity Jeopardy! ' debut, earning a quarterfinal victory after two Daily Double wagers. She wound up securing $54,100 for her charity of choice, the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Friendly House, which assists women recovering from substance abuse. Cho lost the subsequent semifinal game to East Bay comic W. Kamau Bell, who won the tournament and donated a portion of his $1 million winnings to Oakland schools.
