A senior Arab parliamentarian has described the Gaza situation as a 'humanitarian disaster' following a visit to the Rafah crossing, as lawmakers, including Bahrain's Mamdouh Al Saleh and Dr Hisham Al Ashiri, met in Cairo for the closing session. Mohammed Al Yamahi, who chairs the Arab Parliament, said the visit laid bare the suffering in Gaza. He praised Egypt's efforts to deliver aid in coordination with the Egyptian Red Crescent, and urged the international community to act to end the violence and violations against Palestinians. The session, held at the Arab League headquarters, drew MPs from across the Arab world. Among them were the two Bahraini representatives, who reaffirmed their country's backing for the Palestinian cause. Leadership Dr Al Ashiri linked Bahrain's stance to the leadership of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the continued support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. 'Bahrain's position is clear,' he said. 'The Palestinian people have a right to an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.' Al Saleh said the Kingdom's presence formed part of its effort to back Arab causes on the global stage. The session also saw the swearing-in of new members and the unopposed appointment of Saudi Shura Council member Saad bin Sulaib Al Otaibi as First Deputy Speaker. Forums Proposals to establish forums for Arab women and youth MPs were approved. Reports from the Parliament's standing committees were also adopted for submission to the relevant authorities. Dr Adel Al Maawada, from Bahrain's Shura Council, took part in the session and contributed to the work of the committee on foreign, political, and security affairs. He said the meeting showed growing Arab engagement with core issues. 'The session discussed a number of key matters,' he said, 'including developments in Palestinian territories, regional tensions, the importance of maintaining the ceasefire, avoiding military conflict, and working to keep the region free of weapons of mass destruction.' Reports Members also reviewed reports from the legal, economic, social, and Palestinian affairs committees, as well as notes from the Rafah visit and a side meeting held during the Arab Summit in Baghdad. Other items on the table included plans for a conference on the blue economy, a draft law to address irregular migration, proposals to support social enterprises and home-run businesses, and steps to improve online education across the Arab world.

El-Sisi orders increased compensation for Ashmoun crash victims, urges road safety measures - Urban & Transport

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday ordered increased compensation for the victims of Friday's deadly road accident near Ashmoun, which claimed the lives of 19 girls and left three others injured. An additional EGP 100,000 will be paid to the families of each person killed and EGP 25,000 to each of the injured, in addition to the compensation already allocated by the Ministries of Labour and Social Solidarity. The victims, mostly young women aged between 14 and 23, had been working in agricultural fields near Sadat City. Many were their families' primary breadwinners, with some having left school to help support their households. The collision occurred when a transport truck crossed the central median on a regional road near Ashmoun in Menoufia Governorate, crashing into a microbus carrying the victims, according to initial police reports. The truck driver has been detained for four days pending investigation. Authorities have ordered a drug test to determine whether he was under the influence at the time of the crash. President El-Sisi also directed the government to expedite road maintenance and repair, particularly on the Regional Ring Road, and to ensure proper signage in construction areas. He called for the immediate removal of road hazards and stricter speed monitoring to help prevent further tragedies. Earlier on Saturday, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy announced the disbursement of initial compensation and instructed officials to fast-track support for the victims' families and injured survivors based on medical assessments. Meanwhile, emergency teams from the Egyptian Red Crescent in Menoufia are providing psychological support to survivors and grieving families. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

et guide: Is Egypt vulnerable to a major earthquake?

Earthquake - file CAIRO - 3 June 2025: Egypt among other countries felt an earthquake that struck earlier Tuesday, and its measuring recorded at a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. No injuries or damages were reported as a result. The Egyptian Red Crescent announced that its operations room detected an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, at a depth of 62 km, in the Dodecanese Islands border area with Turkey, 129 km south-southeast of Aydın, Turkey, at 11:17 a.m. The earthquake was felt by residents of Greater Cairo, the Delta, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh. The current situation is stable, and no reports of human or property damage have been received so far. Egypt has felt at least three strong earthquakes in less than a month. Is Egypt safe from destructive earthquakes? Sherif El-Hadi, head of the Seismology Department at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, explained in previous statements that Egypt is relatively safe from destructive earthquakes compared to other areas directly located on seismic belts. Although history indicates that the region may experience significant seismic activity in the long term, the timing of this event cannot be determined based on recent seismic activity. Although Egyptians have felt some recent tremors, these were mostly caused by earthquakes centered outside Egypt in seismically active areas. Egypt itself is not directly located on a seismic belt, and there is no indication that an unusually large earthquake is imminent in the near future based on these earthquakes. Recent Earthquakes and Their Feelings in Egypt Recently, some Egyptians have felt several earthquakes, all of which had their epicenters outside Egypt. This includes the earthquake that occurred at 2:00 AM Cairo local time on Tuesday, centered in Turkey. Another earthquake recently felt by Egyptians was centered south of the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. This region is known for its seismic activity, and earthquakes that occur in the Mediterranean are usually non-destructive to Egypt and do not pose any immediate threat to Egyptian territory. The Possibility of Predicting Earthquakes The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics confirmed that earthquakes cannot be predicted, and that the frequency of earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean region is normal, and the National Seismic Network monitors them in real-time.
