Foreign investment drives job growth and confidence in Wales

Wales secured 65 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in 2024-25, according to new data from the Department for Business and Trade. That is up 23 per cent on the previous year and the second highest rise of any UK nation or region. The investments have created 2,470 new jobs, marking a 30 per cent increase from 2023-24. Halton Flamgard, which is part of the Finish Halton Group, has relocated to the recently completed RYB1 unit in Ebbw Vale following an £8.9 million investment by Welsh Government in the low carbon facility. Part of a planned expansion, it will see employee numbers at the company go from 70 to 168 by 2028. Rebecca Evans, cabinet secretary for economy, energy and planning, said: "Despite political and economic factors impacting growth globally, Wales has again seen a significant increase in foreign investment. "There has been a large increase in jobs created through FDI in 2024-25 and the continuing growth of 'new' investment into Wales has reached a nine-year high. "This is proof that our proactive approach to promoting Wales globally as a great place to do business is delivering. "From Delhi to San Diego we have further raised the profile of Wales as an outstanding investment destination with key sectors that boast world-class capabilities." A total of 1,652 jobs were also safeguarded through foreign investment—the highest number recorded across the UK. The Welsh Government supports investors by promoting the country's core strengths at industry events and providing guidance on locations, workforce, business networks, and academic links. First Minister Eluned Morgan said: "Creating high quality jobs in key sectors is a priority for this government, and attracting overseas investment is a key part of our economic strategy. "We are focused as a government on economic growth, and these figures highlight the confidence investors are showing in the Welsh economy. "Our International Investment Summit later this year will provide a further opportunity to showcase Wales to the world and attract even more investment into Wales."

How to make a dishwasher – even a bad one

It's fair to say that an underperforming dishwasher is better than no dishwasher at all, but it's also fair to say that fact doesn't make living with an underperforming dishwasher any less irritating. The good news: there are simple steps you can take to make a dishwasher – even a bad one – work better. And you don't even have to call a professional or make a trip to the hardware store. Signs that your dishwasher is underperforming include water left in the tub after a wash; cycles taking longer to complete; and, of course, dishes that don't come out clean or dry. If you notice these things happening, the machine may require servicing. But first, try tweaking the way you use the dishwasher. Here, experts share their best tips for making an old (or just not-so-great) dishwasher run better. Give your dishes some space 'Overcrowding is the primary cause of insufficiently clean dishes in a dishwasher,' says Al Howard, the vice president of Plesser's Appliances in the US. To ensure optimal cleaning performance, follow these general guidelines when loading the dishwasher: Take care not to load items in a way that impedes the rotation of the wash arms. Position bowls and other items that can collect water face down at an angle, to facilitate drainage. To prevent breakage, use designated holders for stemware and glassware. Small items, including mugs, cups, glasses and plastic containers, should go in the top rack. To avoid blocking the sprayer arms, put larger plates, pans and baking dishes at an angle in the bottom rack. Place pots, pans, cookie sheets, cutting boards, etc., on the sides or end of the bottom rack. Remove the cutlery basket to create more space in the lower rack. Use the third rack (if available) for cutlery and larger utensils. Knives should point downwards for safety. Arrange spoons and forks with the dirty sides facing up to maximise cleaning efficiency. Choose the right dishwasher detergent … Loading Dishwasher detergents come in gel, powder, hard-pressed tabs and all-in-one tabs (also known as dishwasher detergent pods or pacs). 'While each may be effective on most stains, the best choice is all-in-one tabs,' says Sarah Post, a senior manager of auto-dish research and development at Reckitt, makers of Finish.

Rock Tech receives EUR 150 million in Letters of Support for Guben Converter

UK (UKEF) and Finish (FINNVERA) export credit agencies have expressed their interest to support the Guben Lithium Converter project with up to EUR 150 million in credit guarantees. In addition to the proposed senior debt tranche from the European Investment Bank (EIB), Export Credit Agency (ECA) support represents a vital component of the debt financing structure for large-scale infrastructure projects like the Guben Converter. Amidst market turmoil and Lithium price uncertainty Rock Tech's Guben Converter - a strategic project under the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act - remains the largest committed stand-alone Lithium refinery project in Europe. TORONTO, May 21, 2025 /CNW/ - Rock Tech Lithium Inc. (TSX-V: RCK) (OTCQX: RCKTF) (FWB: RJIB) (WKN: A1XF0V) (the "Company" or "Rock Tech") is pleased to announce it has received up to EUR 150m in government-backed support from export credit agencies via conditional, non-binding expressions of interest. Specifically, UK Export Finance (UKEF) and the Finnish export credit agency (Finnvera) have expressed their interest to support the Guben Converter. In addition, discussions with further export credit agencies from Europe, Australia and China are ongoing to support the procurement of key equipment items from these countries. ECA support will be additional to the proposed European Investment Banks's (EIB) senior debt tranche of EUR 150 million (as announced by the Company in a previous press release). "We welcome the strong backing from Export Credit Agencies in supporting the Guben Converter project. Their engagement reflects confidence in our vision, the business case and the strategic importance of this facility for Europe's green energy transition," says Chris Wright, Rock Tech's CFO. In detail, the debt financing will benefit from the project's European sourcing scheme, making the project eligible for credit guarantees from major European export credit agencies. Large packages for supplies and services are to be contracted with business & procurement partners based in United Kingdom and Finland, and other EU countries. Subject to the due diligence being completed concurrently in accordance with their policies and applicable OECD consensus guidelines by the lending consortium and the ECAs, UKEF and Finnvera have expressed their initial interest in supporting the project via guarantees towards the lenders. About the Guben Converter The Guben Lithium Converter is a pioneering facility in Guben, Brandenburg, Germany, by the German-Canadian company Rock Tech Lithium Inc. This plant is set to become Europe's first commercial lithium hydroxide refinery, aiming to produce 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually—enough to supply over 500,000 electric vehicles per year. Strategically located near major automotive and battery manufacturing hubs the Guben Converter is designed to strengthen Europe's battery supply chain by processing spodumene concentrate secured via leading trading partner C&D Logistics (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. The Converter will utilize advanced crystallization technologies, supplied by GEA Group AG, to ensure high-purity lithium production with minimal environmental impact. The leading international engineering firm Worley Ltd. has been selected as construction partner (EPCM) for the plant. Recognized as a strategic project under the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act, the Guben Converter underscores Europe's commitment to securing essential materials for the energy transition. The project is expected to create approximately 200 jobs and represents a significant step toward regionalizing and decarbonizing the lithium supply chain in Europe. On behalf of the Management Mirco Wojnarowicz CEO, Rock Tech Lithium Inc. ABOUT ROCK TECH Rock Tech's vision is to supply the electric vehicle and battery industry with sustainable, locally produced lithium, targeting a 100% recycling rate. To ensure resilient supply chains, the company plans to build lithium converters at the doorstep of its customers, beginning with the Company's proposed Lithium Hydroxide Converter in Guben, Brandenburg, Germany. The second Converter is planned to be built in Ontario, Canada. Rock Tech Lithium plans to source raw material from its own Georgia Lake spodumene project in the Thunder Bay Mining District of Ontario, Canada, and procure from other ESG-compliant mines. Ultimately, Rock Tech's goal is to create a closed-loop lithium production system. Rock Tech has gathered one of the strongest teams in the industry to close the most pressing gap in the clean mobility story. The Company has adopted strict environmental, social and governance standards and is developing a proprietary refining process to increase efficiency and sustainability further.
