The Cowboys have the "Blow It Up'' plan (and a 7-10 season) behind them. There is the ever-present criticism of owner Jerry Jones and QB Dak Prescott, of course, but there is also a much-celebrated "culture shift'' under new coach Brian Schottenheimer. Many critics have predicted a modest to underwhelming season for Dallas in Schottenheimer's first year at the helm. Others have projected a successful first campaign. And why? But ... there is a game within a game when it comes to offensive design, and Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens is speaking out about the advantages to coach Brian Schottenheimer putting something into Dallas' gameplan that "a lot of coaches don't do.'' 'A lot of motions, a lot of things that give you an indicator on what the defense is doing before you say hike,' Pickens said on Wednesday in describing a Cowboys advantage. 'A lot of coaches don't do that.' Previous Cowboys offenses under head coaches and coordinators from Jason Garrett to Kellen Moore and Mike McCarthy were often criticized for their - you guessed it - lack of creativity. Our view all along was that, for example ... Somebody around here must've been doing something right. But if "Schotty'' believes that a foundational feature of Dallas' offensive identity is about motion and deception and "creativity''? And if Pickens, who comes here in a trade from the Steelers to join Lamb as an elite receiving duo, is a believer? "Belief'' and trust are half the battle. The truth is, motion (and option routes and other "creative'' tools) can sometimes be confusing to an offense, too; it wasn't that long ago that Lamb and his receiving buddies were being ripped for being poor route-runners. Advertisement But now? Lamb is an NFL trend-setter. 'Most definitely,'' Pickens said. "I've played (with) a lot of other receivers, but he plays a little more of everything, so it kind of affects a lot of stuff in a good way. ... A lot of guys can't do that ... a lot of No. 1 guys just kind of play where the coaches got them playing. But he plays everything." Schotty has said he wants to be "multiple.'' And Prescott is in Year 10 at the helm, so he should have a mastery of it all. So, in the end, "creativity'' is fun. But not as fun as winning games. So ... based on early work here at The Star in mandatory minicamp, let's answer the question with "Cowboys Stock Up With Five On The Rise at Minicamp'' ... while spending more time on the lesser lights than the superstars .... Advertisement Let's dive into three big winners from practice No. 1 based on the observations from several Cowboys insiders. 1 - TE Brevyn Spann-Ford - The former UDFA is definitely the No. 2 tight end ... and is getting work with the 1's. He came out of college at Minnesota with a good run-blocking reputation. He's already way more than that. Jake Ferguson - who caught a Dak Prescott TD in team work - is the top dog. But two-tight-end sets? Spann-Ford looks like your guy. 2 - QB Joe Milton - Athletic? No doubt. Accurate as a thrower? That's been the case this week, yes. This is Dak Prescott's show (and he's been good and looking healthy this week, too). But the cheap trade for the promising prospect "Bazooka Joe'' is off to a tremendous start. Advertisement 3 - LB Jack Sanborn - Our old pal Mike Zimmer had his guy in Eric Kendricks. New defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has his in Sanborn, who is surprisingly able to drop into coverage and looks athletic doing so. ESPN notes that Marist Liufau recorded a pair of Wednesday QB pressures during indoor work at Ford Center, by the way. And ... Micah Parsons did do some on-field work on Tuesday after dealing with earlier back tightness, and when it comes to the front seven, he's obviously the top story. But he can't do it alone. Sanborn looks like a helper. 4 - CB Israel Mukuamu - Trade get Kaiir Elam has been really steady at one corner. Daron Bland has moved around, with some work in the slot. Advertisement That's freed Mukuamu to move from the slot ("Big Safety'' at an eye-popping 6-4?) to get some starting reps at outside cornerback. ... where he's gone against George Pickens ... and survived. 5 - WR Jonathan Mingo - Ah, "The Mingo Package.'' FRISCO - Star edge rusher Micah Parsons and coach Brian Schotteheimer hooked up on the phone over the weekend. Advertisement That was fun. On Tuesday, Micah is in attendance here at The Star for the start of mandatory minicamp, with a now-revealed plan to participate in the workouts. "He will be on the field doing some stuff,'' Schotty told us before the practice session. This follows up a viral social media trend where people call their friends out of the blue to say "goodnight". ... with Micah having called Tyler Smith, Trevon Diggs, Osa Odighizuwa and KaVontae Turpin ... and then seeing things turning a bit serious when Parsons called first-year coach Schottenheimer. "Look, I know this is weird for everybody man, but look you're handling everything the right way, bro," Schotty said after Parsons explained how he reached out to check on his coach. Advertisement Schottenheimer, of course, was referencing Parsons' ongoing contract negotiations. "This thing's going to get worked out, and again I'm thrilled to see where we take this thing, man,'' the coach said. "We're building something special and you're going to be a huge part of it, bro." This "promise" from Schotty is reassuring news that Parsons will soon be signed to a long-term deal to stay in Dallas. Regardless of how much the contract is worth - what reports could touch $40 million a year - fans will be glad that things are finally settled. And Micah's response that night to the coach? Advertisement "See you Monday," Parsons said during the call, a hint to his attendance at the upcoming mandatory minicamp festivities this week. After a team dinner Monday, the Cowboys have three days of work. Then they have six weeks off before flying to Oxnard for training camp. To this point, Parsons has vowed to not use a holdout as leverage in his negotiations. Tuesday is the first official day for progress on this "promise" issued by Schottenheimer. Micah has stated how important it is to him to be with the team and with this coach. And so here he is.
