17 new wildfires spark in Alberta over 24 hour period

After a week of thunderstorms throughout the province, northern Alberta has seen an uptick in wildfires since things cooled down earlier this month. Alberta Wildfire said 17 new blazes have sparked since Thursday. There are 59 wildfires currently burning in the province's forest protection area, 18 are considered out of control. Evacuation orders for Peerless Lake, Trout Lake and Fort Chipewyan Lake are still in effect. Saddle Hills County's evacuation alert for the Blueberry Mountain area also remains in effect. More than 1,500 firefighters from Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, the Canadian Forest Service, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, Australia, Costa Rica, Washington and the United States Forest Service are working on putting out blazes in the province. A fire ban is still in effect for the High Level and Fort McMurray forest areas in northern Alberta. Under the ban, all outdoor wood fires, fireworks, barbeque charcoal briquettes and exploding targets are prohibited. You can see if you are in a fire ban area here. Since Jan. 1, there have been 622 wildfires in Alberta, burning more than 676,000 hectares.

Hit-and-run suspect found already arrested on unrelated matter: RCMP

The Fort McMurray RCMP detachment can be seen in this Google image from 2019. (Google Street View) Mounties say they found a wanted hit-and-run driver already in police custody for unrelated charges. RCMP issued a release looking for a driver in connection with a hit-and-run that seriously hurt a 65-year-old woman on Thursday in Fort McMurray. On Friday, she remained in critical, life-threatening condition. With the help of public tips and resident surveillance footage, RCMP said they were able to identify the vehicle and the suspected driver, who was later found already in police custody awaiting charges for 'other criminal matters.' The driver, a 31-year-old Fort McMurray man, has been charged with failure to stop after an accident causing bodily harm. RCMP did not say what other 'criminal matters' the man is accused of. He remains in custody awaiting a judicial interim hearing.

Climate group raises concerns about oil and gas representation on pension fund boards

Suncor's base plant with upgraders in the oil sands in Fort McMurray Alta, on Monday June 13, 2017. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franson TORONTO — A climate advocacy group says oil and gas representation on the boards of Canada's big public pensions raise concerns about conflicts of interest. Shift Action says in a new report that as of June 1, the boards of five of Canada's largest public sector funds had members who are also involved with fossil fuel companies. It says CPP Investments, Canada's largest pension fund, has the second-highest representation with three in ten members of its board having ties to the industry. The fund, which recently dropped its commitment to reach net-zero financed emissions by 2050, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Other funds the group found with cross-appointments include the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, Public Sector Pension Investment Board, Alberta Investment Management Corp. and Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System. Shift says that pension funds have a legal responsibility to act in the long-term best interest of beneficiaries, and that the interests of fossil fuel companies could compete with efforts to manage climate-related risks and reducing emissions. 'It's easy to see how fossil fuel company directors could potentially find themselves with real or perceived conflicts, and how such conflicts, if not addressed, could undermine prudent pension governance,' said Shift executive director Adam Scott in a statement. The group says that in total, nine current board members across the funds sit on the boards or executive teams of 12 oil and gas companies, or investment firms focused on the industry. It notes, however, that the number of boards with fossil fuel representation has gone down from seven to five since its last report in 2022. It says the boards of Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, Investment Management Corporation of Ontario and CDPQ no longer have fossil fuel representation. --- This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 26, 2025.
