Liverpool plan to steal COMPLETE €25m midfielder from Everton

Liverpool admire Merlin Rohl And one name now on the list who could play in various midfield roles and provide extra cover is Merlin Rohl. The Germany under-21 international is currently starring at the UEFA Euro Under-21 Championships - where he will come up against three Liverpool players in this weekend's final. Advertisement The 22-year-old plays his club football for Freiburg in the Bundesliga - although he struggled with a couple of injuries last season. Despite those setbacks, Rohl is seen as a future star - capable of playing in the offensive midfield positions as well as doing the dirty work in the middle. Rohl deal will break €25m record Described by former Ingolstadt coach Thomas Oral as a 'complete' midfielder, Rohl has been compared to Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka and has been attracting plenty of attention from the Premier League. In a recent report in Sport Bild, Everton were named as suitors, and the paper has also detailed Liverpool's interest. Advertisement Crystal Palace and Newcastle have all got Rohl on the radar but he would surely be most intrigued by a move to the Premier League champions if the opportunity arose. He extended his contract back in September 2024 - meaning his club side are reasonably well protected from a transfer fee perspective. Kevin Schade represents the Bundesliga club's biggest-ever sale - with Brentford paying around €25m for the German international - and Bild suggests it would take a similar bid to move Rohl. Everton are reported to have made two bids already with an intention to return to the table this summer. If Liverpool are going to get involved in the bidding, they will have to strike soon.

Germany U21s looking forward to 'ice baths and pizza' after grueling quarterfinal win over Italy

Germany U21s looking forward to 'ice baths and pizza' after grueling quarterfinal win over Italy The Germany U21s are through to the 2025 UEFA European Championship semi-finals after winning an absolutely insane game at the MOL Arena in Dunajska Streda on Sunday night. The Germans battled back from a 0-1 deficit against the Italian U21s to take a 2-1 lead deep into second half injury time. Antonio Di Salvo's DFB Juniors appeared destined to book their semi-final ticket easily, particularly after the Italians were reduced to ten and then nine men by two sending offs in the the final ten minutes of normal time. Shorthanded Italy nevertheless forced extra time with a set-piece equalizer at 90+6. Advertisement Despite having a double man advantage, the Germans weren't able to score a winner during either extra time interval. The match appeared destined for penalties until Freiburg's Merlin Röhl finally netted the 3-2 in the 117th. Eventually, the U21s did their head coach proud by defeating his heritage country. Speaking to German broadcaster Sat1 after the full-time whistle finally brought some relief, DFB squad captain Eric Martel did his utmost to present his usual calm front. Martel narrowly escaped being the man who cost his team their tournament dream. It was the Köln man who committed the foul that enabled Italy to equalize from the dead ball situation. Martel's midfield teammate Rocco Reitz was also-visibly exhausted after 120 minutes of action, particularly after making several long sprints towards the end. Di Salvo and Röhl also registered their thoughts. Advertisement 'It doesn't matter what happens to us, we can shake it all off,' Martel told Sat1. 'I'm dead tired while also being exuberantly happy.' Reitz described himself as 'at the end of his rope' after a 'crazy game'. Di Salvo spoke of 'hectic play [preceding the 2-2]' that forced the team to 'make life unnecessarily difficult for themselves.' Röhl admitted the team 'didn't do well [enough] two men up'. When it came time to discuss rejuvenation, Reitz made the famous German Per Mertesacker 'callback' referencing the German central defender's famous interview after Germany's grueling extra time victory over Algeria in the 2014 World Cup Round-of-16. German female footballing legend Alexandra Popp also referenced the famous 'Notorious BFG: Are you not entertained?' moment when speaking after a German quarterfinal extra time victory in the Olympics tournament last sumer. Advertisement Reitz's recipe called for Mertesacker's 'ice baths', with some extra references to the evening's opponent and the U21 head coach's cultural roots. 'Ice baths and pizza will help us get fit for [the French U21s in the semi-finals] on Wednesday,' the Borussia Mönchengladbach man promised. GGFN | Peter Weis

Germany names squad for Women's Euros – DW – 06/12/2025

There were no major surprises as Germany women's coach Christian Wück nominated his final squad for this summer's Euro 2025 in Switzerland. Germany are looking to go one better than the last tournament. Entering his first major tournament since taking over as Germany coach last summer, Christian Wück has gone with a good deal of experience in his 23-player squad for the July 2-27 European Championship in Switzerland. Captain Giulia Gwinn and Bayern Munich teammate Lea Schüller, as well as Sara Däbritz and Kathrin Hendrich are among 11 players who were part of the Germany team that made the final in England in 2022 – where they finished second after being defeated 2-1 by the hosts. Also included in the squad is Freiburg's 20-year-old attacking talent Cora Zicai. 'Joy, enthusiasm and conviction' In a statement on the website of the German Football Association (DFB), Wück described the squad as "good and balanced," and designed to be able to "find the right solutions for the challenges" of the month-long tournament. "We want to play with a mixture of joy, enthusiasm, will and conviction – that's what this squad stands for. If we manage to do that, we can go very far," he said. Wück added that in light of Germany's last few matches in the Nations League, they were approaching the tournament with a "boost" in self-confidence, but he declined to state a specific goal for his team. Germany have won their last five Nations League games with little trouble, their most recent being a 6-0 victory over Austria earlier this month. The two recently had recently caused a bit of controversy by criticizing the national team coach over what they said was a lack of communication with omitted players. Also absent is Bayern Munich star Lena Oberdorf who is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury suffered last July. Germany, winners of the tournament a record eight times, are up against Poland, Denmark and Sweden in Group C. Their opening match is against Poland in St. Gallen on July 4. Edited by: Mathias Brück

Werder Bremen show interest in Igor Matanović

Werder Bremen join Borussia Mönchengladbach and Freiburg in their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Igor Matanović, according to DeichStube. With Oliver Burke joining Union Berlin and André Silva returning to RB Leipzig following an uninspiring loan spell, Bremen are looking to bolster their attack for the 2025/26 season. In their sights is Matanović, who only managed 300 minutes in the top-flight for Eintracht last season. With fellow Bundesliga clubs interested alongside Bremen, interest in Matanović is certainly high and Eintracht are ready to part ways with the Croat, either on loan or a permanent basis. Advertisement Matanović has only scored two goals and provided one assist in 25 games for Eintracht Frankfurt since his move from St. Pauli in 2021. The now 22-year-old was loaned back to his former club for two seasons before spending the 2023/24 campaign on loan at 2. Bundesliga side Karlsruher, where he scored 16 goals in 32 games. At Bremen, Matanović would provide competition for Marvin Ducksch, Justin Njinmah and Marco Grüll. GGFN | Daniel Pinder
