2025's best horror movie has just been added to Time Out's horror hall of fame

Once disregarded as low-grade schlock, horror has become one of Hollywood's most bankable genres, as well as one of its most artistically fruitful. Even so, all-time classics remain hard to come by. On Time Out's list of the 100 greatest horror movies ever made, only a select handful from the past decade have managed to claw their way in – emphasis on 'claw'. Now, however, there's a brand-new entry, and it's only a few months old. But Ryan Coogler's Sinners is simply Creed and Black Panther director has enough hits under his belt to prove himself as, arguably, the greatest blockbuster filmmaker of his generation. But breaking the box office with established IP is one thing. Doing so with a wholly original story is another, much less an original vampire blues musical period piece. A visually stunning, thematically rich tale of two twin criminals (both played by Michael B Jordan) having their plans to go straight interrupted by undead bloodsuckers, the film has earned comparisons to the likes of 1996's From Dusk Till Dawn, but in truth it's a large-scale, big-idea epic unlike any other recent blockbuster. A sensation upon release, it's proof there's still money in original stories, and we're betting it's a movie audiences will talk about for years. Sinners becomes the most recent addition to the Time Out horror canon since Coralie Fargeat's 2024 body horror The Substance.

Sam Rockwell Says ‘Sinners' Success Is ‘Encouraging' for Hollywood: ‘It's a Big Swing'

Sam Rockwell is singing the praises of 'Sinners.' The 'White Lotus' actor told Variety that 'Sinners' succeeding at the box office is a beacon of hope for Hollywood. 'It was encouraging because it was rated R, you know? The sexuality felt palpable,' Rockwell said. 'And the fact that it made a bunch of money while mixing all these genres — 'From Dusk Till Dawn,' 'Sounder,' 'Devil in a Blue Dress' — I thought that was encouraging. It's a big swing. And it made a lot of money, just like 'Wonder Woman.' That was a big swing, too. Made by a woman [Patty Jenkins]. Did very well.' More from IndieWire 'Charliebird' Wins Top Tribeca Festival Jury Prize: Full List of Winners Jacinda Ardern Documentary 'Prime Minister' Shows Us How the New Zealand Leader Is the Anti-Trump Rockwell compared 'Sinners' to Academy Award-winning films that also transcended genre. ''Birdman' is another one. On paper, you'd think, 'That movie's not going to do anything.' But it was amazing,' he said. 'Same with 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' Everybody turned it down — Gene Hackman, James Caan. But look what happened. So yeah, I'm encouraged by certain things.' Rockwell even compared the CGI twin trick 'Sinners' pulls with Michael B. Jordan to the work he did his 2009 film 'Moon.' 'I really dug it. And the technology with the twin thing has come a long way since I did a trick like that long ago.' Coogler recently told Ebony Magazine that 'Sinners' was his break from directing franchise films. 'I wanted to get away from that,' he said of returning to his original indie roots. 'I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.' Coogler previously thanked fellow filmmakers Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, and Brian De Palma for helping to inspire his leap of faith with 'Sinners.' He also credited audiences for purchasing tickets to go to the feature in theaters. Coogler wrote in a letter shared with IndieWire, 'I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry, but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can. We don't get to do what we do if you don't show up. To see your response to the film has reinvigorated me and many others who believe in this art form. And together maybe we can expand the definition of what a blockbuster is, what a horror movie is, and of what an IMAX audience looks like.' 'Sinners' is back in IMAX 70mm starting today for one week only — here's where you can watch it

"Sinners" is one of the best movies of the year. In my opinion, it's "From Dusk Till Dawn" but better, and our senior writer Alix Blackburn declared it her "favorite movie of 2025 so far" when she reviewed it for us. It's also a box office sensation. The movie is still in tons of theaters, and last weekend it was the No. 2 movie at the domestic box office despite being almost a month old. But unless you saw this movie early, you might have missed it in IMAX, and you almost certainly missed it in IMAX 70mm. If you missed it in IMAX 70mm and wish you could have seen the movie the way director Ryan Coogler intended it to be seen, then I have good news for you. "Sinners" is officially back in IMAX 70mm for one week only — starting today (May 15). While "Sinners" is back in IMAX 70mm, not every theater can show movies in this specialty large format. Just nine theaters will be showing it from today (May 15) until May 22. Here's where you can see "Sinners" in IMAX 70mm: If one of these theaters isn't near you, you might have a local theater showing "Sinners" in a larger format such as IMAX digital, Regal's PX RPX, Screen X or good ol' fashioned 70mm film. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Having seen it in IMAX myself, I do recommend you see it on as large a screen as possible. The sound and visuals of "Sinners" are breathtaking, and going to see it on a larger screen with greater detail and fuller sound will be worth the higher price. If you can't make it out to the theater, "Sinners" will eventually come to one of the best streaming services. First, the vampire movie will come to premium video-on-demand (PVOD) services like Amazon and Apple. Then, "Sinners" will be available to stream on Max. Based on other recent Warner Bros. releases, I currently predict "Sinners" will arrive on PVOD by the end of the month and on HBO Max for the weekend of July. Check out our full guide on when "Sinners" is coming to streaming for more details. "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan doing double duty as identical twins Elijah ("Smoke") and Elias ("Stack") Moore. They have returned to their Mississippi Delta hometown of Clarksdale after years away in World War I and working for the Chicago Outfit. Along with their cousin "Preacher Boy" (Miles Caton), they're working to open a juke joint for the local Black community. To do that, they recruit a handful of old friends and family, including their cousin, who is a blues performer with an incredible gift for transcendent music. Unfortunately, it's that same gift that will ultimately bring vampires — and potentially doom — to Clarksdale. Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

"Of course, I didn't look like a model, so it never crossed my mind that one day I would be in it. "If somebody had told me I was gonna be in it at 58, I would have sent them to the madhouse, but the world has changed, and that's exciting," she adds. Other major figures gracing the SI cover this year include former LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne, Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles and model Lauren Chan. 'Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has always been about more than swimsuits and stunning imagery,' MJ Day, the editor in chief of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, said of the Mexican actress's first-ever cover. 'It's about creating a platform to capture moments that define our times, celebrating people who are shaping culture, and showcasing beauty on a world stage.' In 2024, cover stars included Sports Illustrated veterans Kate Upton and Chrissy Teigen as well as journalist Gayle King. The oldest person to appear in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue is Martha Stewart, who was 81 years old when she appeared on the cover of the 2023 issue. IOL Lifestyle
