FMCG quarterly outlook: Weather and input costs hit topline in Q1; GCPL, Dabur, Marico flag mixed margin performance

Topline growth of India's fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) players is expected to remain subdued in the June quarter due to macro headwinds including unseasonal rains, a truncated summer season and input cost inflation, companies said in their quarterly updates on Friday. While sequential demand recovery was visible — particularly in urban markets — earnings remained under pressure across the board. Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) said it expects to post high-single-digit value growth led by volumes, but added that margins from its India business will likely stay below the normative range in Q1FY26. 'Standalone EBITDA margin in Q1FY26 is likely to be below our normative range but is expected to improve,' the company said, quoted PTI. Marico flagged inflation in key inputs such as copra, worsened by erratic weather. 'Gross margin is expected to be under incremental pressure, on a particularly high base and partly due to the pricing-led high denominator effect,' the company said, while projecting a modest operating profit for the quarter. Dabur India Ltd said its consolidated revenue is expected to grow in low-single digits, weighed down by its beverages business, which took a hit due to a short summer and unseasonal rainfall. Its consolidated operating profit growth is also expected to 'marginally lag' revenue growth. However, Dabur noted strong performances in its home and personal care (HPC) segment, led by brands like Dabur Red Toothpaste, Odonil, Odomos and Gulabari. 'Key brands… are expected to post strong growth coupled with market share gains. Within healthcare, our brands such as Dabur Honey, Hajmola, Honitus and Health Juices are expected to post robust double-digit growth,' it said. On broader sectoral trends, Marico noted 'consistent demand patterns' with signs of rural recovery and steady urban consumption. 'We expect gradual improvement in the quarters ahead, supported by easing inflation, a favourable monsoon season and policy stimulus,' it said. Organised trade channels such as e-commerce, modern trade and quick commerce maintained their growth momentum through the quarter, both Marico and Dabur observed. On the international front, Marico reported high-teen constant currency growth driven by broad-based expansion across most markets. Dabur expects to post 'double-digit constant currency growth' from its global operations. However, GCPL's international performance was mixed. Its Indonesia business, the company's second-largest market after India, faced intense competitive pricing, likely resulting in flattish volumes. On the other hand, its GAUM (Godrej Africa, USA, Middle East) business is projected to deliver 'strong double-digit value growth and UVG for the second consecutive quarter.' It is "likely to deliver double-digit value growth and UVG," it said. While palm oil prices have started moderating towards the end of June, benefits of this moderation will only be realised in the second half of FY26. Live Events GCPL's personal care business , which consists of hair care, soaps, and toiletries, is expected to grow value in low-single digit impacted by soaps. "Standalone business excluding soaps (which is seeing a price-volume rebalancing driven by commodity volatility) is expected to deliver a very strong performance this quarter with double-digit UVG," said GCPL. In Indonesia, the second biggest market of the company after India, GCPL faced a significant increase in competitive pricing action across all major categories, which will likely result in "flattish" volume growth. "GAUM (Godrej Africa, USA, and Middle East) business is likely to deliver strong double-digit value growth and UVG for the second consecutive quarter. Profit growth continues to be healthy," it said. At a consolidated level, "we expect double-digit INR revenue growth on the back of high single-digit UVG", the company. For FY26, the company said, "we are on track to deliver mid-high-single digit UVG for standalone business, high-single digit consolidated INR revenue growth and double-digit consolidated EBITDA growth for the full year". According to GCPL, this update provides an overall summary of the operating performance and demand trends during the quarter ended June 30, 2025. "This will be followed by a detailed performance update, post the approval of the Q1FY26 financial results by the Board of Directors," it said.

In a recent note, SBI Securities noted, 'Assuming EBITDA growth of 10 per cent year-on-year in FY26 and EV/EBITDA multiple of 13x (discount of 24 per cent to its closely listed peers), the fair value of the business comes to Rs 1,148. Post listing, Street will closely track key performance indicators (pre-sales, embedded EBITDA margins, cash inflows/outflows, debt) of the company.' A note by Deven Choksey Research said Kalpataru trades at about 187 times its FY25 annualised EBITDA 'which appears expensive compared to a broad set of listed peers operating in the mid-to-high-end real estate segment.' A note by Indsec Research said Kalpataru is valued at an EV/pre-sales of 5x on an FY25 annualised basis versus peers' group average at 5.5x.

Illegal Mosquito Incense Sticks Spark Concern in Western India: Good Knight Survey

67% of West Indian residents feel uneasy using unregulated mosquito products, highlights growing health risk. By Riddhima Jain Published on June 20, 2025, 16:57 IST Last updated June 20, 2025, 17:00 IST A recent survey by Good Knight, a leading household insecticide brand from Godrej Consumer Products Ltd. (GCPL), has revealed growing unease among residents of Western India regarding the use of illegal mosquito repellent incense sticks. The study, titled 'One Mosquito, Countless Threats,' was conducted by market research firm YouGov and shows that 67% of people in the region feel uncomfortable or irritated when using such unregulated products. The report further highlights that 60% of respondents in the western region—which includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Madhya Pradesh—are highly selective about the mosquito repellents they use, emphasizing a strong preference for government-approved, safe products. In fact, 75% of West Indian consumers opt for officially approved repellents, despite the growing presence of illegal alternatives. Nationally, 69% of respondents shared similar discomfort, with East India leading the concern at 73%. The report also shows that both men (70%) and women (67%) are nearly equally disturbed by these products, which often contain unregistered Chinese chemicals. The illegal mosquito incense stick market is rapidly growing, currently valued at ₹320 crore in Western India alone, out of a national market size of ₹1600 crore, and is expanding by 20% annually. Maharashtra is reportedly the largest market for these illegal products in the region, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Speaking on the findings, Shilpa Suresh, Head of Marketing – Home Care at GCPL, said, 'Many of these incense sticks are illegally manufactured and pose serious health risks. Good Knight remains committed to offering science-backed, safe, and government-approved mosquito solutions for Indian homes.' Echoing these concerns, Jayant Deshpande, Honorary Secretary of the Home Insects Control Association (HICA), called the use of illegal mosquito incense sticks 'a silent killer entering homes.' He urged citizens to check for CIBRC registration numbers on repellent packaging to ensure safety and authenticity. Ahmedabad Plane Crash
