Gehlot accuses BJP, RSS of plotting to alter Constitution

Time of India14 hours ago

Jodhpur/Jaipur: In a sharp escalation of political wrangling, former chief minister
Ashok Gehlot
Friday accused
BJP
and
RSS
of harbouring a long-standing agenda to amend India's Constitution. His remarks came in response to controversial statements made by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who suggested changes to the Preamble.
Speaking in Jodhpur, Gehlot cited multiple
Supreme Court
judgments, including the landmark 1973 Kesavananda Bharati case, to emphasise the legal sanctity of the Constitution's Preamble. "This interpretation was further fortified in 1976 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who formally inserted the terms secular and socialist into the Preamble during the 42nd Constitutional Amendment," said Gehlot.
He highlighted how the apex court established that secularism and socialism were fundamental to the Constitution's basic structure in the Minerva Mills case, SR Bommai judgment (1994) and most recently in Balram Singh case (2024).
"The BJP-RSS ecosystem has consistently shown discomfort with the inclusive and pluralistic spirit of our Constitution," Gehlot stated on social media platform X. The ex-CM said Congress has demanded legal action against those "threatening the constitutional fabric" and has urged the judiciary to take suo motu notice of such statements.
The political discourse took an additional turn when Gehlot responded to current CM Bhajan Lal Sharma's criticism of Congress's role during the Emergency period (1975-77).
Gehlot acknowledged past mistakes, noting that Congress publicly expressed regret for the Emergency era. He pointed out that Indira Gandhi's subsequent electoral victory in 1980, securing 353 seats, demonstrated public forgiveness.
"During the Emergency, many people were imprisoned. When Congress leaders, including Indira Gandhi, returned to power, we publicly acknowledged that there were many shortcomings and mistakes during that time (Emergency), and we expressed regret for these.
That chapter is closed now. What more do you want?" Gehlot said.
He added, "We were also imprisoned. Bhajan Lal Ji may not know this. The difference is that they went to jail during the Emergency and we went to jail in support of Indira Gandhi when she was expelled from Parliament despite winning the Chikmagalur election. Thousands of people across India were imprisoned in her support. I think about 2000 people from Jodhpur alone went to jail.
The atmosphere was different then."
Calling Sharma politically inexperienced, Gehlot said, "Bhajan Lal ji is new to this; he has become chief minister for the first time and he's a young first-time legislator, so he might not have all the information. We shouldn't mind what he says. He is Bhajan Lal ji, and Bhajan Lal ji also means someone who sings devotional songs, so he might not be aware of everything."

Investment depression inevitable consequence of Modi govt's policies of suppression: Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday said the country's economic and investment growth is sluggish due to the Narendra Modi government's "policies of suppression and oppression". In a post on X, Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said India's economic growth "stubbornly refuses" to accelerate at the desired and perfectly feasible rate. The most important reason for this failure, he said, is that private corporate investment continues to remain sluggish in spite of the generous tax cuts in September 2019 and the PLI (production-linked incentive) cash handouts. Ramesh said the Modi Government's own survey indicates that private sector capital expenditure may well be 25 per cent lower in 2025-26 as compared to the previous year. "Informed analysts have opined that while banks are willing to lend, companies are unwilling to borrow since the investment environment is not seen to be conducive to expansion.

There are undoubtedly global uncertainties but within India, it is clear that demand growth is being held back because of stagnant wages , a distorted GST structure, and sharpening of inequalities," he said in the post. Ramesh added that amid a widespread consumption slowdown, "there is no systematic incentive for corporates to invest in the creation of additional capacity". The Congress general secretary said investment is as much a financial decision as it is influenced by psychological factors. "These factors have come into greater prominence because of the havoc created by tax terrorism, the gaming of the system by a favoured few, and a feeling of fear and insecurity in the larger corporate world. "Ultimately, the investment depression is the inevitable consequence of the Modi government's policies of suppression and oppression," Ramesh alleged.

Double engine Sarkar autocratic, says Sharmila

Rajamahendravaram: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president YS Sharmila strongly criticised the BJP-led government, stating that only Congress party truly understands people's problems and works for their genuine welfare. She participated in East Godavari district Congress extended meeting held in Rajamahendravaram on Friday. Sharmila alleged that both the Centre and the State are currently under autocratic and regressive rule. She appealed to the public to support Congress party and bring back good governance, which she described as a historic necessity. Senior Congress leader and CWC special invitee Gidugu Rudra Raju also addressed the gathering. Referring to the Emergency period, he condemned the BJP and RSS for spreading relentless misinformation about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, constitutional institutions are being undermined and misused for political gain, which he said is far worse than anything and equal to a dictatorship. He added that while Indira Gandhi made significant contributions to national security and poverty alleviation, today's political forces are shamefully attempting to tarnish her legacy with false propaganda. Rudra Raju asserted that India witnessed real development and genuine welfare during Congress rule. The meeting was chaired by East Godavari District Congress President TK Visweswara Reddy. APCC in-charge Palak Verma also attended the event. Following the meeting, Sharmila, Rudra Raju, Vishweshwara Reddy, and others paid floral tributes to Dr BR Ambedkar's statue at Gokavaram Bus Stand. Later, Sharmila unveiled a statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi near the water tank at Rajiv Gandhi Park in Seethampeta and paid homage by garlanding the statues of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
