In Berlin's new zoo of sorts, you watch archaeologists, not animals

What was life in Berlin like centuries ago? And what traces did people leave behind? Visitors can watch these questions being answered in real time at Germany's new zoo-like lab where you can watch archaeologists at work behind glass. Petri Berlin is designed as a workshop and laboratory building, aiming to give visitors insights into the work of archaeologists. Through large windows, visitors can observe them at work on various floors. "Here, visitors can trace the journey of a find — from excavation, through cleaning, restoration and cataloguing, to its display as an exhibit," said director Anne Sklebitz at a press conference launching the Petri Berlin exhibition. The detective work behind the research often remains hidden, but can now be seen as it happens, the archaeologist said. "Petri Berlin is not a museum, but a workshop and laboratory building that offers visitors insights into the work of archaeologists," commented state archaeologist Matthias Wemhoff. The seven-storey building is divided thematically: Finds are cleaned on the first floor and restored on the second. There are also interactive stations where visitors can get hands-on experience. A highlight of the new centre is the remains of a medieval Latin school from the 14th century. The entire archaeology lab was built on the foundations of this school. In the basement, visitors can admire parts of the walls. The school stood on central Berlin's Petriplatz, one of the oldest parts of the city and the site of the former Petri Church, then centre of the city of Cölln, one of the two nuclei of Berlin. Foundation remains of the church are also on display in the exhibition. Initially, the museum is officially only German-language, but tours and workshops are on offer and most Berlin museum workers can easily switch into English.

Govt's inaction on job scheme puts 7,500 youngsters' Germany dreams on hold

MUMBAI: For thousands of young students across the state, a golden opportunity to work in Germany now feels like a distant dream. Ten months ago, 7,500 students were shortlisted under a Maharashtra government project to provide skilled manpower to the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. But ever since, there has been no further communication from the state government. (Shutterstock) The initiative was launched with much fanfare in 2024 under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Maharashtra government and the German authorities. Over 32,000 students registered for the programme, and 7,500, selected for training in various trades, were to join German language classes scheduled to begin in September 2024. But the training never materialised. Many students had left existing jobs in the hope of securing a better future abroad. Now, with no sign of movement, disappointment is fast turning into desperation. According to the government resolution issued on July 11, 2024, the state had proposed a fund of ₹ 36 crore to support German-language training for 10,000 students across 400 institutions. Each training centre was to host batches of 25 students. The plan included a monthly subsidy of ₹ 10,000 per student for institutions located in cities and ₹ 7,000 per student for those in rural areas. A letter from the students reads, 'The silence from the state has been frustrating. Many of us saw the project as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly to for skilled jobs.' The pilot project was formally inaugurated by then governor Ramesh Bais at Raj Bhavan in August 2024. A task force was set up, centres across Maharashtra were approved and coordination was planned across departments. But after the assembly elections, the entire process was stalled. Former school education minister Deepak Kesarkar, who chaired the task force, said that he had recently met Devendra Fadnavis regarding the project. 'He asked me to submit a proposal to work as a coordinator,' he said. 'Once that is done, we hope the initiative will gain momentum again.' Kesarkar added that the MoU would help Maharashtra's youth not only in employment but in higher education as well. Rahul Rekhawar, director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training, said, 'The database of candidates is ready. We have also identified centres across the state to provide German-language training to the selected candidates. There are several joint groups of German and state officers working on various segments of the MoU. Once the mechanism for sending candidates is finalised, we will start training sessions as per requirements.'

Online dating apps don't want you to find a partner, tech author says

A tap and a swipe is all that might separate you from the love of your life, Tinder would have us believe. — Marijan Murat/dpa BERLIN: "Online dating is broken." It's a phrase increasingly heard among frustrated users of the likes of Tinder and Bumble. A German author on the social impact of tech believes he knows why. "The biggest flaw of dating platforms lies in their business model," says Thomas Köhler, a non-fiction author specialising on the risks posed by software and technology. "These apps are not designed for people to actually find a partner, at least not permanently. Because once someone succeeds, they leave." This, he says, means one thing in every single case: two lost customers, no more swipes, no more clicks, no more subscriptions. "This is where a fundamental contradiction lies: An app that claims to help with finding a partner profits the most from those who remain unsuccessful." Tinder says that since its launch in September of 2012, the app has been downloaded more than half a billion times and has led to more than 75 billion matches, the company says. Some 1.5 million people meet up for dates every week, it says, thanks to the app, available in more than 40 languages. According to Köhler, author of a new German-language book on online dating, says all common apps have a design flaw. "They reduce encounters to appearances and superficial criteria such as age, location and height. Intelligence, education, charisma, humour, tolerance and other qualities that users value cannot be represented online and are left behind." This, he says, leads to a competition of superficialities, where those who most brazenly embellish reality often win. Researchers have also recently focused on the risk of so-called online dating burnout. While not an independent illness, it manifests in symptoms such as emotional exhaustion, cynicism and reduced performance, as psychologist Wera Aretz wrote in 2024 in the Journal of Business and Media Psychology. A completely different phenomenon is the politicisation of dating today. For example, many users display a watermelon emoji in their profiles to signal their solidarity with Palestine and, sometimes, opposition to Israel as a whole. Köhler commented generally on politics and relationships: "Politics has long been a huge topic in dating. Many apps now offer the option to indicate one's political orientation. It is worth using this feature and taking a look at the views of potential matches. This can avoid disappointment, as the increasing polarisation of our society does not stop at relationships." – dpa

2026 Tesla Model Y Performance breaks cover

Tesla's overhauled performance SUV has been spied testing, completely undisguised, in the Swiss Alps. The 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance has been revealed in a pair of short clips – captured with another Tesla – that were submitted to German-language YouTube channel Nextmove. The updated flagship mid-size electric SUV is expected to be revealed later this year. Given the lack of camouflage and the bold colour – which appears orange in the footage but could be Ultra Red – this particular example could be being filmed or photographed for promotional material. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. The footage of the front-end is too grainy to make much out, apart from what appears to be a more aggressive bumper, but the clearer view of the rear-end shows what appears to be a sportier bumper treatment and a black lip spoiler. The Model Y Performance also appears to be riding on new wheels, which may measure 21 inches. Other changes could mirror those made to the Model 3 Performance sedan with its substantial 2024 update, including upgraded brakes and the addition of adaptive suspension. The Model 3 Performance also gained ventilated front sports seats, metal pedals, and carbon-fibre trim. However, Chinese-built examples like those sold here received a 15kW cut in power – to 343kW – and a reduction in electric driving range on the WLTP cycle from 547km to 528km. Nevertheless, the Model 3 Performance's claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time was reduced by 0.2 seconds to just 3.1 seconds. The updated Model Y currently uses a 79kWh battery in Long Range guise, making it good for 551km of WLTP range – an improvement of 18km on the pre-update model, which offered 533km of range. The updated Model Y range featured a substantial visual update externally with new front- and rear-end styling, plus a refreshed interior featuring an 8.0-inch rear passenger screen, ambient lighting, and screen-based gear selection. More changes were made under the skin, too. The suspension was retuned for greater comfort, the steering was retuned for greater responsiveness, and redesigned body castings are claimed to reduce the number of parts and the amount of road noise. The updated Performance isn't the only fresh Model Y variant on the radar. Also expected to join the existing Model Y lineup is a new seven-seat variant. Above: Model Y, Model 3 Performance
