JAMMU: J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra and senior functionaries GA Mir, Lal Singh, Raman Bhalla, and Ravinder Sharma were detained Sunday as police blocked the party's planned 'statehood march' in Jammu.
They were taken to the police lines and released later.
Congress has ramped up its statehood campaign under the banner 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq', holding protests and rallies across the region.
A heavy police contingent halted the protest as Congress functionaries and workers began marching toward Raj Bhawan to submit a memorandum to LG Manoj Sinha demanding the restoration of J&K's statehood, which was revoked following the abrogation of Article 370 in Aug 2019 and bifurcation of the region into Union territories, including Ladakh.
Karra said the party would proceed with its 'Delhi Challo' programme Monday to gherao Parliament on the first day of the monsoon session, despite police crackdowns in Jammu and Srinagar. 'These harsh measures will only strengthen our resolve,' he said, adding that MPs from INDIA bloc support the demand for full statehood.
Former JKPCC chief and ex-minister Mir said: 'We're not asking for anything special — this is a commitment made by the PM himself.'

Love Jihad, a conspiracy targeting Hindu girls, women must impart moral values to daughters: Vijayvargiya

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh minister for urban administration Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday stated that Love Jihad is a conspiracy targeting Hindu girls, making them victims of Muslim men. Speaking at a public function organised to promote wrestling in the Indore-1 assembly constituency area, the former BJP national general secretary urged mothers to instill 'acche sanskar' (moral values) in their daughters. He emphasised that young Hindu girls should verify the family backgrounds of youths before becoming friends with them. "Love Jihad is a conspiracy. Many Hindu girls have become victims," Vijayvargiya said during his address. "Some youths are quoting Hindu names and emotionally entrapping girls. They are destroying the lives of these young girls. It is essential that we caution girls about such conspiracy," he added. The minister further argued, "Mothers and sisters should make them understand that before making friends with a youth, they should check their family background. It is Sanskar that teaches children to differentiate between the good and the bad." He stated that present-day television serials are disturbing young minds. "Send your children to the park so they can learn wrestling and make good friends," he suggested. "Mobile phones have become the close friends of today's children which is affecting their health and thinking," Vijayvargiya maintained. Recalling Indore's high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case, Vijayvargiya remarked, "Had Sonam been trained in good ethics and values, her mother and father would not have had to hide their faces today." Meanwhile, the state Congress responded strongly to Vijayvargiya's comments. State PCC spokesman Abhinav Barolia demanded an apology from Kailash Vijayvargiya for his remarks. "The minister must apologise to women for his remarks. He cannot suppress people by shirking responsibility and talking about teaching values. Your party's govt has been in power in the state for more than two decades and there is a BJP govt at the Centre. And then, you pin the blame on mothers and sisters. What is the double-engine govt doing?" he asked.

Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns: Outspoken Vice President Who Took On Judiciary

New Delhi: Jagdeep Dhankhar, who bowed out of office of India's 14th Vice President today two years ahead of schedule citing his health, had made his mark both in Rajya Sabha as well as in Bengal as the Governor of the state. An outspoken leader, his tenure in the second highest office of India was marked by regular run-ins with the Opposition and strong comments on the judiciary over the issue of separation of powers. The 74-year-old had said earlier this month that he would retire at the "right time", subject to "divine interventions". The Opposition Congress remarked that there was more to his resignation than meets the eye. In his letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Mr Dhankhar had said his resignation would be effective immediately and thanked her and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy. It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India's remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation's history has been a true honor," he wrote in his letter to the President. Born in a farmer's family in Kithana, a small village in Rajasthan, Mr Dhankhar's journey to the second highest office in the country has been cited frequently as a study in ability, grit and determination. An alumni of Chittorgarh's Sainik School and later, the Rajasthan University, he became a lawyer in the Rajasthan High Court and subsequently the Supreme Court, before turning to politics. Part of the Congress when PV Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister, Mr Dhankhar had shifted to the BJP with the rise of Ashok Gehlot in Rajasthan and even had a brief stint as a minister in the government led by Chandrasekhar. Over the years, Mr Dhankhar was known for championing issues related to the Other Backward Classes, including the grant of OBC status to the Jat community in Rajasthan. His surprise appointment as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019 brought him back into political limelight, and he remained a vigilant sentry, often calling the Mamata Banerjee government to task over multiple issues including law and order, federalism and university appointments. The advocate-turned politician was equally stern with the Opposition in the Upper House over multiple issues, leading to an attempt to remove him from office. While the attempt came to nothing, he remained the first Vice-President against whom such a move was made. Mr Dhankhar had brushed off the notice, likening it to using a "rusted" vegetable knife for bypass surgery. In the Vice-Presidential election held on in August 2022, Mr Dhankhar had defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva with 528 of 710 valid votes, securing 74.37 per cent - the highest margin of victory since 1992.

New Delhi: Differences between Congress and other Opposition parties on Prime Minister's reply to the debate on Operation Sindoor was visible on the first day of the monsoon session. While most parties were of the view that a discussion be held where all parties can express their views, Congress insisted in the Business Advisory Committee meeting of the Lok Sabha that it does not want a debate without the assurance that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak on the issue.
