Inaugural National AI Conference Kicks off in Rabat
The inaugural National AI Conference, held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, was launched on Tuesday in Rabat, bringing together a distinguished group of public and private sector stakeholders, experts, and representatives of international organizations. Organized by the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform under the theme "An efficient and ethical AI strategy to serve our society," the conference aims to outline a national strategy for sovereign AI, one that is tailored to the needs of the population and strategic sectors, and aligned with the High Royal Guidelines. Over two days, this landmark national gathering involves representatives from various ministries and public institutions, the private sector, investment and sovereign funds, Moroccan startups, as well as international figures from academia, civil society, and the Moroccan diaspora. The conference is structured around 13 thematic areas where AI is expected to have the most transformative impact for Morocco. These include administrative reform and modernization, education and new learning methods, sports, healthcare and precision medicine, smart agriculture, and fisheries production. Other key themes include Industry X.0, security and sovereignty, culture and creativity, media and democracy, international cooperation, governance, trust and ethics, innovation and startups, as well as infrastructure and investment. The first day of the conference focuses on sector-specific technical sessions and demonstrations by innovative AI-driven startups, while the second addresses the political dimensions and international cooperation related to AI. The closing ceremony will provide a platform to present the key recommendations emerging from the two days of discussions and to formalize several memorandums of understanding with both national and international organizations. FM Outlines Govt. Approach to Boosting Moroccan Diaspora's Role in Development
Recognizing the vital role of Moroccans living abroad in the country's development, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita emphasized Monday the government's approach to preserving their identity and safeguarding their rights. Speaking during a question session at the Lower House, Bourita noted that these efforts focus on providing the community with adequate administrative services and facilitating their effective contribution—as investors and skilled professionals—to Morocco's economic growth. Bourita emphasized that Moroccans living abroad are held in high regard by HM King Mohammed VI, highlighting the Royal Speech of November 6, 2024, which called for a renewed approach to addressing the issues of the expatriate community. In this regard, he noted that, as an integral component of the Moroccan nation, addressing their issues should never be circumstantial or ad hoc but should rather build on the achievements made, such as the Marhaba operation. He added that the government is acting on the clear Royal Instructions outlined in the speech by working on proposals to restructure institutions and put the Sovereign's goals into action. On a separate note, Bourita pointed out that the Kingdom does not benefit from the added value of Moroccan businessmen and investors living abroad, especially considering that only 10% of the transfers from this community—exceeding MAD 117 billion—are allocated to investment. He noted that the High Royal Guidelines contained in the speech, which addressed both the institutional framework and the creation of the Mohammadia Foundation for Moroccans Residing Abroad, gave this issue a central place. The minister further called for involving Moroccans of the world in the development and implementation of laws, including those related to investment, in order to better take into account their specificities and constraints, and to benefit from their expertise. "The High Royal Instructions have been clear in this regard: Moroccans of the world are capable of significantly contributing to the country's development as investors, provided that procedures are adapted to their specificities." Morocco's Digital Transition Ministry, DGSN Sign Deal to Boost E-Government and Digital ID Use
The Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform and the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) signed a framework agreement on Friday in Rabat to strengthen their institutional partnership. The initiative aims to develop e-government and promote the widespread use of the technical features and secure services enabled by the digital identity linked to the new generation of the national electronic identity card. The agreement was signed by the Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, and the Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdellatif Hammouchi, according to a joint press release. It is in line with the High Royal Guidelines aimed at developing the e-government system and promoting the use of modern technologies to facilitate citizens' access to public services. It also forms part of the implementation of the "Digital Morocco 2030" strategy. The pact stems from both institutions' shared will to enhance the quality of public services delivered to citizens through functional complementarity between administrations and institutions. It also seeks to establish a legal and organizational framework for the partnership and cooperation between the Ministry and the DGSN, while also fostering the development of e-government and providing identity verification services offered by the national trusted third party platform. Additionally, it aims to strengthen joint institutional efforts to accelerate the public sector's digital transformation and support the development of comprehensive, high-quality digital public services. Govt. Head Hails Morocco's Gradual, Sustainable Energy Transformation Under Royal Guidelines
Morocco has undertaken an in-depth, gradual and sustainable energy transformation since the outset of His Majesty King Mohammed VI's reign, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch declared on Wednesday in Ouarzazate. Speaking at the opening of the 16th Energy Conference, Akhannouch emphasized that the Kingdom has invested in solar, wind and hydroelectric power, and more recently in green hydrogen, in addition to establishing strong institutions and strengthening governance capacities. Akhannouch referred to Wednesday's visit to the Noor solar power station in Ouarzazate, with its four power plants now being operational, hoping to "to go even further." He envisioned to see renewable energies further integrated in the production, transport, housing and agricultural systems, and a generalization of low-carbon solutions in Moroccan cities, industries and rural territories. In this sense, he mentioned the "Morocco Offer" for the development of the green hydrogen sector, currently being implemented in accordance with the High Royal Guidelines, which is an extension of the Kingdom's 15 years of experience in the development of renewable energies. On the other hand, Akhannouch highlighted the Energy-Water Nexus as a major concern for several countries, urging for synergy between water and energy policies. "The water stress experienced by Morocco over the last 7 years requires us to completely overhaul our water policy," he observed, noting the need to integrate innovation into the entire water sector value chain, from research and resource mobilization to distribution and reuse. In view of the worsening effects of climate change and its impact on water resources, on the one hand, and the growing demand for water, on the other, the Kingdom is committed, in line with the High Royal Guidelines, to implementing a large-scale desalination program. Morocco Launches MAD 28 Billion 'Airports 2030' Project
Morocco has launched a MAD 28 billion program s part of its 'Airports 2030' vision, Moroccan Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh announced on Monday at Lower House's question time. Key projects include a new international airport in Casablanca, in application of the High Royal Guidelines, which is connected to the high-speed rail network, allowing travel from to Marrakech in 50 minutes and to Tangier in 30 minutes, according to the minister. The airport aims to serve long-haul flights and support Morocco's flagship air (RAM)'s fleet expansion from 50 to 100 aircraft by 2030. Other airport expansions include Rabat-Salé (to 4 million passengers), Fez (5 million), and Sania Ramel (2 million). Overall capacity is set to grow from 34 million passengers in 2024 to 80 million by 2030, Kayouh said. The plan also involves a new modern terminal at Mohammed V Airport (40M capacity), upgrades in World Cup 2030 host cities, namely Casablanca, Rabat Tangier and Marrakech, as well as enhancements in traveler experience—such as biometric gates, reduced wait times, and improved access—thanks to coordination with national authorities like the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN), the Gendarmerie Royale and the Customs Administration, the minister added.
