After IGIA, more airports in North India will have real time fog data, to ensure safe and
After Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi, more airports in North India will have access to data for fog forecasting and visibility to support safe and efficient airport operations during the winter. By installing dedicated sensors at additional sites, airport operators will gain real-time data to help them activate response plans and ensure operations remain safe and efficient—even in the thickest fog. For airlines, pilots, air traffic controllers and passengers, this means fewer costly diversions, fewer delays, safer runways and more informed travel during the challenging winter fog season. Every year hundreds of flights and trains are either cancelled or delayed due to thick fog in North India in the winter months especially from mid-December to mid-February. In January 2024, around 8,038 flights were delayed and 496 were cancelled due to fog, according to a written reply in Lok Sabha. "The Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX) is stepping into its next phase — WiFEX-II— which will extend localized, runway-specific fog predictions to more airports in North India," the government said in a press statement. The system has already been successful at IGIA, India's busiest and most fog-affected airport. It is a robust observational network now reaching Jewar Airport, Noida, and Hisar, Haryana, covering key aviation corridors across North India, according to the government statement. Over the past decade, WiFEX scientists have deployed advanced instruments, micrometeorology towers, ceilometers, and high-frequency sensors to collect detailed data on temperature layers, humidity, wind, turbulence, soil heat, and aerosols—building a dataset that reveals how dense fog forms and disperses. These insights have powered the development of a high-resolution probabilistic fog prediction model, which now stands among the region's most advanced tools for operational forecasting. The model can reliably predict when fog will begin, how dense it will be, how long it will last, and when it will clear—achieving more than 85% accuracy for very dense fog (visibility below 200 meters). WiFEX's contribution goes far beyond forecasts. The effort has pushed the frontiers of fog science, revealing how air pollution, urban heat islands, land-use changes, and tiny airborne particles influence fog thickness and duration. These findings are now improving early warning systems and helping policymakers design better urban and air quality management plans. Launched in the winter of 2015 at IGIA, New Delhi, WiFEX is one of the world's few long-term open-field experiments focused solely on fog. It was led by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), with support from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF).

Parliamentary panel recommends RRTS link between IGI and Jewar Airports
A parliamentary panel has recommended that the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry connect the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the under-construction Jewar airport through the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors. The Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, chaired by Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, appreciated the efforts of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for ensuring multimodal integration of RRTS with other transport modes such as metro rail, railways, inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs), bus depots and expressways. In its report, the committee emphasised that Jewar Airport is expected to become a key transport hub for residents of Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and nearby areas in the future. The growth of dense residential areas, employment opportunities, entertainment zones, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities along the Ghaziabad-Noida-Greater Noida corridor makes it even more crucial to connect these areas through a fast, safe, reliable, and efficient transport system like RRTS. "The integration of RRTS will not only improve connectivity but will also enhance the ridership and financial viability of the Delhi-Meerut Corridor. It will provide much-needed connectivity to Jewar Airport, a vital node in the region's transportation network," the committee said. The panel also noted that two major transport nodes in Delhi-NCR Indira Gandhi International Airport and Jewar Airport are yet to be integrated with the RRTS network. Regarding the IGIA-RRTS integration, the committee acknowledged that earlier it had been informed the linkage would be implemented via the Delhi-SNB corridor. "However, the DPR (Detailed Project Report) for this corridor is currently being revisited by NCRTC," it said. The committee, therefore, recommended that both airports be connected to the RRTS network to boost regional connectivity and streamline passenger movement. On the matter of public safety and comfort, the panel recommended conducting a study on the impact of vibrations from the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor on nearby structures, including residential buildings, offices, hospitals, and educational institutions. It also suggested the installation of sound barriers to minimize disturbance to residents and users of these facilities. "The installation of sound barriers is important to prevent inconvenience to the public due to the operation of Namo Bharat trains," the committee added. Regarding medical provisions, the committee noted that first-aid services have been established, and NCRTC has partnered with hospitals within a 10-kilometre radius of the Delhi-Meerut corridor for emergency medical support. RRTS personnel have also received training in administering CPR to address health emergencies such as strokes or cardiac arrests, the report said.

Noida Airport Sets New Launch Timeline: Domestic Flights From Sept 15, Full Rollout By November 2025 After Delays
Noida International Airport Jewar: Noida International Airport is now set to begin domestic flights and cargo operations in September 2025, with international services expected to follow by November 2025. The announcement was made by Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi. This marks the third delay in the airport's scheduled launch since its foundation stone was laid in November 2021 — will be completed by November this year. However, the airport was first expected to be completed by September 2024. However, the deadline was moved to April 2025, and then delayed again to May–June due to incomplete work on the terminal building. In March, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath set new targets — May 15 for starting domestic flights and June 25 for international operations. Jewar Airport's Phases Costs The Noida airport in Jewar is being built in four phases with an investment of Rs 29,650 crore. The first phase, costing Rs 10,056 crore, is designed to cater to 12 million passengers annually. It will have one runway and one terminal building. By the fourth phase, the airport is expected to become operational in 2040. The airport will have the capacity to handle 70 million passengers annually. Second Major Commercial Airport Once finished, the 1,334-hectare Noida airport will be the second major commercial airport in the National Capital Region, after Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. Right now, the only other functioning airport in the NCR is Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad, which runs a few commercial flights under the control of the Indian Air Force.
