FORECAST: Just how hot will it get in Germany this summer?
How hot will it get? According to the German Weather Service (DWD), average temperatures across Germany are expected to be higher each month this summer than the average temperatures seen in the same months from 1991 to 2020. Having originally estimated the chances of a warmer summer (than the average for the summers between 1991 and 2020) at 81 percent, the DWD has now upgraded the probability to 93 percent. A report by the Weather Channel also suggests that Germany could see a heat dome event from July, which occurs when a high-pressure system traps hot air over a specific region and often causes significantly higher temperatures and prolonged heat waves. READ ALSO: RANKED: The worst German cities to spend a heatwave in While it's important to note that long-term weather forecasts always come with a degree of uncertainty – weather systems are notoriously complex, affected by temperatures, air pressure, humidity, winds, as well as far-away influences like ocean surface temperatures – seasonal climate forecasts do enable meteorologists to determine at least a rough trend for the coming weeks, months, and years. 2025: year of the 'yo-yo summer'? Following two days of the highest temperatures recorded yet this year, meteorologists are now predicting a period of lower temperatures accompanied by thunderstorms, heavy rain or hail and strong winds in many parts of Germany. Advertisement Meteorologist Dominik Jung recently suggested that predictions of hotter and drier conditions through the majority of this summer don't seem to fit the wild weather swings that are currently being seen. "In my opinion," Jung wrote, "a consistent summer high is not in sight." Instead, he predicts more roller coaster weather conditions and a "yo-yo summer". READ ALSO: Five cooler holiday destinations you can get to from Germany by train More mosquitos and restrictions on shipping a possibility Partly as a result of low rainwater levels during the winter, large parts of Germany are already experiencing extreme drought, according to the drought monitor at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research. In addition to increasing the risk of forest fires, this means that regions in southern Germany – currently experiencing a combination of warmer temperatures and shallow waters – could be in for 'a very mosquito-laden summer," according to Julia Heiermann at the environmental NGO NABU. Advertisement In west Germany meanwhile, a spokesperson for Rhine Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSA) has warned of the possibility of restrictions on shipping on the Rhine. Water levels on some parts of the river, Germany's most important commercial waterway, are at the lowest level seen in decades at this time of year. While the world as a whole has already warmed by around 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels, European land temperatures have increased by almost 2°C, according to the latest figures from the European Environment Agency. Commenting on the figures, Carolina Kyllmann of Clean Energy Wire summed up the implications: 'In addition to heatwaves … persistent low levels of rainfall are becoming more common and, when the rain does come, it is frequently in prolonged downpours, causing flooding. Fires are also becoming more intense and more common.'

Daewoo E&C steps up global push with major wins in Czech Republic, Turkmenistan
Daewoo Engineering & Construction said Monday it is intensifying global expansion efforts to revive its legacy as a pioneer in 'global construction,' with Chairman Jung Won-ju engaging with key business partners worldwide. One of the most notable developments is the Czech Republic's new nuclear power plant project. Earlier in June, a Korean consortium including Daewoo E&C clinched a landmark $18 billion contract with the Czech state utility to build new nuclear reactors in the country. Under the deal, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power will construct two 1,000-megawatt APR-1000 reactors — Dukovany Units 5 and 6 — with completion targeted for 2036 and 2037, respectively. Daewoo E&C will lead the structural construction, securing a multitrillion-won contract later this year. In Central Asia, the Korean builder secured a contract in May to construct a mineral fertilizer plant in Turkmenistan, valued at nearly 1 trillion won ($723 million), marking its first entry into the region. This achievement follows Chairman Jung's annual visits to the country, as he recognized Turkmenistan's growth potential in sectors such as petrochemicals, fertilizers, infrastructure and new city development. Daewoo E&C plans to further strengthen cooperation by proposing a range of eco-friendly business solutions tailored to the country's needs. Since Jungheung Group acquired Daewoo E&C in 2022, Jung has emphasized overseas expansion as a strategic response to domestic market uncertainties. His direct involvement in project development has been cited as a factor in securing initiatives like Vietnam's Kien Giang New City project and the Turkmenistan fertilizer plant. Continuing his diplomatic business campaign, Chairman Jung visited Indonesia in May and met with President Prabowo Subianto to discuss potential expansion in real estate development, infrastructure and petrochemical projects. Shortly after, on June 18, he traveled to Mozambique and held talks with President Daniel Chapo to explore collaboration and expansion opportunities. This visit aligns with Daewoo E&C's broader strategy to grow its presence in Africa, particularly through LNG plant construction, leveraging its project experience in countries like Nigeria and Botswana. Domestically, Daewoo E&C is strengthening its portfolio with key public and urban redevelopment projects. It led the design review for Jinhae New Port's southern breakwater and was selected for the Umyeonsan expressway relocation. In high-end residential redevelopment, it secured the Gangnam Wonhyosung Villa project, reaffirming its expertise from previous projects like Hannam The Hill. The company is also pursuing the Gaepo Woosung 7th Reconstruction Project, emphasizing resident-focused designs over profit. 'The spirit of challenge and passion that led us to pioneer the global construction market under the banner of 'Global Construction' is deeply ingrained in all our employees,' a Daewoo E&C representative stated. 'We will do our utmost to establish ourselves as Korea's leading construction company by expanding overseas markets and diversifying our domestic business portfolio for the next 100 years.'

Late for work. Laid off. Office romance. What your dreams about work might really mean
Ever dream about work? Have nightmares? According to a survey by the mattress review site , nearly two-thirds of us have job-related dreams that cause us to wake up stressed out and worried. Instead of shrugging them off, you might want to take note. While no definitive answer exists on the meaning of dreams, notable scientists, including Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, believed they hold messages. Freud, for example, considered dreaming to be an expression of repressed or unconscious conflicts or desires, while Jung explained dreams as thoughts released by the subconscious, creating an internal dialogue. Modern research recently concluded that dreams are part of the brain's data-dumping function, consolidating information it deems to be important. Dream interpreter Inbaal Honigman believes there is meaning in the dreams that you remember. 'It could be something super benign, or it could be more than that,' she says. Honigman teamed up with JobLeads, an online job search platform, analyzing search data to find the most popular work-related dreams. Here are some of the most common, along with Honigman's take on what they could be trying to tell you.

Daewoo E&C chair meets with Mozambican leader amid LNG push
South Korean builder Daewoo Engineering & Construction said Thursday that Chair Jung Won-ju met with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo to discuss cooperation on a liquefied natural gas plant project and potential opportunities in emerging sectors. According to the company, during Jung's four-day visit to Mozambique from Monday to Thursday, his meeting at the presidential palace included a request for continued cooperation on Daewoo's ongoing LNG plant project, as well as interest and support for a new LNG project bid currently in progress. Drawing on the company's expertise built since entering the continent in 1977, Jung emphasized that Daewoo E&C has executed around 280 projects in Africa, totaling $32 billion in value. 'Building on that experience, we aim to help Mozambique emerge as a global exporter of natural gas and achieve rapid economic growth,' Jung said. In response, President Chapo pledged active support for the company's future involvement. 'I hope Daewoo will also leverage its development expertise in new city and tourism infrastructure projects beyond the LNG sector,' he said. Mozambique plays a crucial role in Daewoo E&C's LNG development strategy. It is home to one of Africa's largest natural gas reserves, estimated to supply global demand for roughly 16 years. On Monday, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, the state-run energy firm, to collaborate on gas-related development projects.

CM inaugurates 125 community centres for sustainable livelihood in Meghalaya
Shillong: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated 125 community centres across Garo Hills on Tuesday, funded under the Meghalaya Livelihood and Forest Ecosystem Management Project (MegLIFE). The centres were virtually inaugurated from Dobakol Awemong in Baghmara C&RD block of South Garo Hills district, where the CM was present for the event. Built at a cost of Rs 24 lakh each — Rs 13 lakh from the project and Rs 11 lakh from the state — the community centres aim to provide spaces for various community-led activities, including income-generating initiatives. "The MegLIFE project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), focuses on community-based forest management and livelihood enhancement in 500 villages across 12 districts of Meghalaya. Alongside constructing these centres, the project has supported several income-generating activities such as nurseries, plantations, minor irrigation check dams, dug-out ponds, plastic tanks, and RCC water storage tanks," an official statement said. IVCS and SHGs have been integral to the initiative, receiving direct benefits and playing key roles in its execution.
