Kelantan border clampdown nets RM171mil in contraband

KOTA BARU: Police have seized an estimated RM171.6 million worth of contraband since the border crossing ban came into effect in December last year. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, said the figure — recorded during the first six months of this year — represented a 78 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. He said that about RM37.2 million worth of contraband was seized between January and June last year. "The sharp rise clearly reflects the effectiveness of integrated operations under the Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA), particularly in tightening border control, curbing smuggling activities, and safeguarding national sovereignty and security. "Since the implementation of the ban, enforcement efforts under KDNKA have been significantly intensified. "I've set specific performance targets for each district to ensure that operations are thorough and strategically aligned with our objectives," he said at the monthly assembly held at the state police headquarters today. Mohd Yusoff said that the achievement would not have been possible without detailed planning, dedication, and the sacrifices of enforcement personnel. He also stressed the importance of continued collaboration between enforcement agencies. "This success is the result of strong strategic cooperation between federal and state-level agencies. "The synergy we've built is delivering tangible results in strengthening Kelantan's border security. "As the saying goes, 'Unity is strength'. I urge all enforcement bodies to continue reinforcing this collaboration — not only to sustain our current momentum, but to achieve even greater progress in securing our borders," he said. On another matter, he said that a total of 62,815 traffic summonses were issued in Kelantan between January and June this year for various traffic offences. "The majority of these were issued to motorists driving without a valid licence," he said. In conjunction with the 218th Police Day celebrations for the Kelantan contingent, Mohd Yusoff said the state police had launched a 50 per cent reduction initiative on traffic summonses. The initiative, held from June 23 to 27, was available at traffic payment counters across all districts in the state. "Its primary aim was to offer the public an opportunity to settle outstanding summonses, to strengthen police-community relations, and to promote civic responsibility and respect for the law," he said. The campaign received overwhelming response, with an estimated 3,700 people attending over the five-day period.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim arriving at Hospital Sultanah Aminah to visit the five helicopter crash victims. JOHOR BARU: One of the Sungai Pulai helicopter crash victims, Constable RG Devendram, is still being sedated to limit his movement during the recovery process at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Hospital Sultanah Aminah here, says Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim. The Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order department director said the condition of all five victims who were injured in a police helicopter crash at Sungai Pulai during a mock nuclear training exercise on Thursday (July 10) is reportedly stable. "Corporal Adline Liu Yan Siu, who is also being treated in the ICU, has regained consciousness. "I had the opportunity to speak with four of the victims earlier and from my observation, they are stable. I hope they will recover in the near future,' he told reporters after visiting the victims at the hospital on Friday (July 11). Meanwhile, Constable Devendram's brother RG Navindran, 39, said doctors informed him that his brother, who has served as a police officer for just over a year, was sedated due to a lung infection. 'I was shocked when I received the news from the Tanjung Kupang police station chief at around 11am yesterday. 'I was later told that my brother had a lung infection, likely due to drowning during the incident,' he said when interviewed. Policeman RG. Navindran, 39, said his brother Davendram, who is one of the Sungai Pulai helicopter crash victims, is still sedated at the intensive care unit of Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Baru. Navindran, who is also a policeman at the Ipoh police headquarters, hoped that the public would pray for his brother's full recovery. Meanwhile, Asst Comm Faizul Muhammad, who piloted the helicopter during the exercise before the incident, is now able to eat and speak normally, according to his sister-in-law Lizah Omar, 46. 'My brother-in-law suffered fractured ribs, head injuries and trauma to his waist. 'But I think he is on the path to recovery as he even joked with us when we visited and asked me for some kuih,' she said. She added that the father of four was initially supposed to accompany his eldest daughter to a university in Terengganu next week, but only his wife will be able to send their daughter off, due to his condition. On Wednesday, the Eurocopter AS3555 Ecureuil known as 'Squirrel' crashed about 21m from the jetty while performing a mock exercise, which was attended by personnel from Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Two senior police officers with the rank of Assistant Commissioner and Superintendent, along with three other personnel, were sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah shortly after the 10.25am incident.

Cops seize RM4.16mil in imitation firearms during raids nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: Approximately RM4.16mil worth of imitation firearms were seized following coordinated raids on several premises in Johor, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur. Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) department director Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim reported that the raids were conducted simultaneously by the department's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) division on Monday (June 30). "In the first operation in Kepong, 4,983 fake weapons worth RM4.1mil were seized along with 1,400 boxes of snacks during raids on two premises. We also detained four foreign men aged between 28 and 40," he said on Tuesday (July 1). Comm Azmi stated that in the second operation, 53 imitation firearms worth RM31,520 were seized, and a local man was detained following raids at two premises. "The third operation in Batu Pahat, Johor, resulted in the detention of a local man and the seizure of 15 fake weapons worth RM15,000," he added. Comm Azmi confirmed that all the fake firearms seized in the three operations were valued at RM4.16mil. "We believe the suspects have been selling imitation firearms online for a few months. We had to conduct these operations as suspects detained in previous criminal cases had been using imitation firearms. "We aim to prevent the misuse of these imitation firearms to avoid public distress and fear," he said. Comm Azmi urged social media platform providers and administrators of online e-commerce sites to monitor and prevent the sale of illegal items on their respective sites and to cooperate with the authorities. "Members of the public must not buy or use imitation firearms. Contact the police immediately if they come across the sale of such items," he advised. On a separate note, Comm Azmi mentioned that the WCB/PSK has conducted 153 raids and detained 233 individuals between January 1 and June 30. They managed to seize RM433.3mil worth of items, including contraband, wildlife, and e-waste products during the same period.
