Kelantan border clampdown nets RM171mil in contraband
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, said the figure — recorded during the first six months of this year — represented a 78 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
He said that about RM37.2 million worth of contraband was seized between January and June last year.
"The sharp rise clearly reflects the effectiveness of integrated operations under the Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA), particularly in tightening border control, curbing smuggling activities, and safeguarding national sovereignty and security.
"Since the implementation of the ban, enforcement efforts under KDNKA have been significantly intensified.
"I've set specific performance targets for each district to ensure that operations are thorough and strategically aligned with our objectives," he said at the monthly assembly held at the state police headquarters today.
Mohd Yusoff said that the achievement would not have been possible without detailed planning, dedication, and the sacrifices of enforcement personnel.
He also stressed the importance of continued collaboration between enforcement agencies.
"This success is the result of strong strategic cooperation between federal and state-level agencies.
"The synergy we've built is delivering tangible results in strengthening Kelantan's border security.
"As the saying goes, 'Unity is strength'. I urge all enforcement bodies to continue reinforcing this collaboration — not only to sustain our current momentum, but to achieve even greater progress in securing our borders," he said.
On another matter, he said that a total of 62,815 traffic summonses were issued in Kelantan between January and June this year for various traffic offences.
"The majority of these were issued to motorists driving without a valid licence," he said.
In conjunction with the 218th Police Day celebrations for the Kelantan contingent, Mohd Yusoff said the state police had launched a 50 per cent reduction initiative on traffic summonses.
The initiative, held from June 23 to 27, was available at traffic payment counters across all districts in the state.
"Its primary aim was to offer the public an opportunity to settle outstanding summonses, to strengthen police-community relations, and to promote civic responsibility and respect for the law," he said.
The campaign received overwhelming response, with an estimated 3,700 people attending over the five-day period.

Opposition MP seeks clarification over conflicting accounts of Kemumim raid
KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition Member of Parliament has urged the Health Ministry to clarify details surrounding the recent raid on a gathering in Kemumin, Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan last month. Datuk Ahmad Saad (PN–Pokok Sena) described the conflicting statements from the ministry and the police regarding the incident as puzzling. "I would like the ministry to respond regarding the recent arrests at what has been described as a gay party, as the statements issued about the event are contradictory, which is rather strange. "There appears to be a conflict between the Health Ministry and the police. In other words, who is telling the truth – or who is not? "Kelantan police have confirmed that there was no involvement from non-governmental organisations, health clinics, or the Health Ministry at the event. In fact, no representatives from any NGOs or ministry agencies were present," he said during the debate on the 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statements of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) in the Dewan Rakyat today. On July 17, it was reported that police had foiled a secret gathering involving more than 100 gay men in Pengkalan Chepa, believed to be on the verge of escalating into immoral activities. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the event was held at a rented bungalow in Kemumin in mid-June, following a tip-off from the public about a planned closed-door gathering of a gay group in Kota Baru. However, on July 22, the Kelantan Health Department issued a statement clarifying that the event was, in fact, an HIV awareness programme. The programme was organised by Sahabat, a non-governmental organisation operating under the guidance of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF). Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said on X that collaboration between the ministry, state health departments, and NGOs was vital in reaching high-risk populations, to raise awareness about prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. However, on July 23, Yusoff reiterated in a statement that the police stood by their original assessment that the gathering was not a health-related event but a social gathering involving members of the gay community. He said investigations found no evidence that the invitations referred to any official collaboration or organisation by NGOs, health clinics, or the Health Ministry.

Kelantan cops defend Kemumin homestay raid, say 20 attendees admitted being gay
KOTA BHARU, July 23 —Police have clarified that the recent raid on a private gathering at a homestay in Kemumin was conducted based on valid intelligence and evidence, with no intent of discrimination. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the operation was carried out to maintain public order and safeguard moral values. He said intelligence revealed that invitations to the event, 'Majlis Malam Mesra Komuniti & Santai-Santai' were shared via WhatsApp among a select group, with no involvement from any official body such as an NGO or the Ministry of Health. 'On the day of the event, the Kelantan Police Task Force began surveillance at 5pm and observed around 100 individuals gathering to eat and socialise. The raid was carried out at about 1am to ensure public safety,' he said in a statement last night. He added that 20 individuals at the premises admitted to being part of the gay community. Among them were a man from Perak and a student from a higher education institution in Besut, Terengganu, while the rest were locals from Kelantan. Mohd Yusoff also said that checks on their mobile phones found three individuals in possession of pornographic videos involving same-sex acts. 'All three were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code and pleaded guilty in the Kota Bharu Magistrate's Court on July 20. They were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000,' he said. The raid also uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication at the premises. He advised the public not to spread unverified information and to continue cooperating with authorities to preserve harmony in the state. Yesterday, the Kelantan government reminded all parties to inform local authorities and relevant agencies in advance before organising any events, to avoid confusion, misunderstanding, and negative public perception. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said any event, including health-related programmes, should be conducted properly and in accordance with existing procedures and regulations. — Bernama
