Police raid six factories, seize RM96m in uncertified steel, illegal imports
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said that the raids were conducted on factories that import, process, and supply metal products for the construction sector and various local industries.
He said that among the seized items were 11,000 rebar of various sizes; 152,830 hollow section steel bars; 4,393 flat bars of various sizes; 2,432 coils of hot-dipped galvanised steel sheets; various types of metal cutting machines; three forklifts; and 152 gas cylinders, all estimated to be worth RM96,350,231.
'The results of the raid and inspection revealed various offences had been committed, including the failure to present valid Standard Compliance Certification (PPS) documents for the import of iron and metal products used in the construction sector.
'Also found were several metal products, categorised as finished products, without a valid PPS by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) for use in the domestic construction sector, in addition to semi-finished products believed to be imported illegally,' he said in a statement today.
Azmi said that the factories in question also employed illegal foreign workers.
'The operation detained and inspected a total of 60 workers, comprising three local men and 57 foreign nationals, aged between 26 and 59 years old, for various offences,' he said.
He said those detained under the Immigration Act were handed over to the State Immigration Department, in addition to the compound value issued amounting to RM12,000.
The Op Padu 2.0 was conducted by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, namely the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Immigration Department of Malaysia, Department of Environment, CIDB, Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) and the local authorities (PBT).
Meanwhile, Azmi said that from January 1 until yesterday, WCB/PSK had conducted 161 raids nationwide and arrested 296 individuals for various offences involving the smuggling of undeclared goods, leakage of controlled and subsidised goods, smuggling of wildlife, and the sale of fake weapons, with a total seizure value of RM540.2 million.
'PDRM (the Royal Malaysia Police) welcomes the cooperation carried out with other enforcement agencies and will fully support the government's intention to ensure the welfare of the people, national security and public order are maintained.
'The public's involvement and cooperation in providing information to the police are highly encouraged so that these crimes can be completely eradicated,' he added. — Bernama

School van in NSE crash rear-ended trailer stalled by engine trouble, Johor cops confirm
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Police have confirmed that an accident involving 21 schoolchildren on the North-South Expressway near the Bandar Dato Onn exit yesterday occurred when the school van they were travelling in rear-ended a trailer that had stopped due to engine problems. Johor Baru North District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, said the incident was reported at 6.23pm, and a video of the crash had since gone viral on social media, according to a report published in Buletin TV3 today. 'Investigations revealed the accident happened around 2pm, involving a school van driven by a 46-year-old local man. The van was travelling from the Bandar Dato Onn exit towards northern Johor Baru when it collided with the rear of a trailer that had stopped in the lane due to engine trouble. 'As a result of the collision, the van driver and two of the 21 schoolchildren on board sustained injuries and were treated at Sultan Ismail Hospital. 'The 32-year-old trailer driver was uninjured,' he said in a statement last night. The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to control a vehicle, leading to an accident. Earlier, media reports stated that the school van driver was injured after being trapped in the driver's seat following the collision with the trailer. The victim was successfully extricated by Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel within 30 minutes before being sent to hospital.

Cyberjaya student murder: Male suspect to be charged under Section 302, says Selangor police chief
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — A male suspect in the murder of university student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara in Cyberjaya is expected to be charged soon under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said. The charge was initially expected to be brought before the Sepang magistrates' court at 8.30am today, according to earlier reports. However, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman later confirmed that the case has been postponed to a date yet to be determined, according to a report in Free Malaysia Today. Three suspects — a man and two women aged 19 and 20 — were arrested between June 26 and June 27 in Johor Baru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, following the discovery of Maniishapriet's body. The victim, a student at the University of Cyberjaya, was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend on June 24. She had been living with five housemates, who had returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21. Police said all three suspects were known to the victim and confirmed there were no signs of forced entry into her unit. An autopsy determined that she died from blunt force trauma to the head and showed no evidence of sexual assault. Authorities also revealed that the male suspect used Maniishapriet's debit card to withdraw money from multiple ATMs shortly after her death. Her laptop, mobile phone, and some cash were also reported missing from the unit. The remand orders for all three suspects have been extended until July 1
