Negligence Leaves Jurala Floodwaters Untapped: BRS Leader Venkataramulu Slams Revanth Govt Over Irrigation Crisis in Nadigadda

Gadwal: Despite early and heavy monsoon rains leading to abundant inflows into the Priyadarshini Jurala Project, the failure to deliver this water to the associated reservoirs under the Nettempadu Lift Irrigation Scheme has drawn strong criticism from BRS senior state leader Nagar Doddi Venkataramulu. In a press statement released on Sunday, Venkataramulu condemned the gross negligence of local public representatives and irrigation officials, holding them responsible for the current irrigation crisis in Nadigadda region. According to the BRS leader, though the Jurala project has been receiving heavy floodwaters, the failure to pump this water to Guddemdoddi Reservoir (1 TMC capacity) and Ryalampadu Reservoir (2 TMC capacity)—which were constructed under the Nettempadu Lift Irrigation Scheme—has deprived thousands of farmers in the Nadigadda area of essential irrigation. He revealed that for the past 15 days, authorities have suspended water pumping operations, citing 'leakage issues,' thereby allowing floodwaters from Jurala to flow downstream unused, instead of diverting them to fill smaller reservoirs like Chinnonipally, Tatikunta, Sangala, and Nagar Doddi. 'This is a clear-cut example of administrative negligence and failure of leadership in the region,' Venkataramulu asserted. Further intensifying his criticism, he pointed out that floodwaters reached the Srisailam Project as early as May 30, yet even after 36 days, the motors under the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme have not been activated. 'Since the formation of Telangana, this government under Revanth Reddy has used the least amount of Krishna river water,' he stated, alleging that the Congress government is deliberately weakening Telangana's irrigation systems. Venkataramulu made a serious accusation that Revanth Reddy had surrendered 65 TMC of Krishna waters to Andhra Pradesh for the benefit of TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, questioning, 'What is the secret deal between you and Chandrababu, Revanth Reddy?' He also highlighted that while a 'crop holiday' has been declared in Mahabubnagar district, water is being diverted to Andhra Pradesh for cultivating a third crop, further betraying the interests of Telangana farmers. The BRS leader issued a strong warning, stating that if irrigation water is not immediately released to fill local reservoirs, ponds, and tanks, thousands of farmers will be forced to march to the Jurala Project and manually switch on the motors themselves as a mark of protest. Venkataramulu called for urgent action from the state government and irrigation authorities to prioritize the water needs of Mahabubnagar district farmers, failing which, a mass farmers' movement would be inevitable. Heavy rains led to floodwaters reaching Jurala, but irrigation reservoirs remain dry. Officials stopped water pumping for 15 days citing 'leakage.' BRS leader blames local MLAs and irrigation department for negligence. Srisailam received floods 36 days ago, but Kalwakurthy pump houses are still inactive. Allegations against Revanth Reddy for giving 65 TMC to Andhra for Chandrababu Naidu. Farmers in Mahabubnagar facing water shortage while Andhra is getting water for third crop. Threat of mass agitation by farmers if immediate action is not taken. This situation highlights the growing dissatisfaction among Telangana farmers, particularly in the Mahabubnagar region, over what they see as systemic neglect and policy betrayal under the current state administration.

Telangana: Minister sets timelines for Mahabubnagar irrigation projects

Nagarkurnool/Wanaparthy, May 1 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday announced a clear roadmap to fast-track all pending irrigation projects in the undivided Mahabubnagar district to ensure their completion as per a defined timeline. He said the massive Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme would be completed by December 2027, which was delayed and an injustice to farmers under the previous BRS regime. Accompanied by Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, Telangana Planning Board Vice Chairman Dr G. Chinna Reddy, and MP Dr Mallu Ravi, the Irrigation Minister undertook an extensive aerial and on-ground inspection of major irrigation sites across Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy districts. The inspection included detailed field assessments and updates from officials on the status of various project components. Later, talking to the media, Uttam announced that a timeline has been fixed to complete the works necessary to fill 50 TMC of water in the Narlapur, Yedula, Vattem, and Karivena reservoirs. He said that the Udandapur reservoir would be filled within the overall March 2026 deadline. He also directed that the Kalwakurthy, Nettempadu, Bheema, and Koilsagar projects must be fully completed by March 2026. The Minister assured that two non-functional motors at Lift-I of the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme would be repaired and made operational within the next two to three months. He instructed irrigation officials to prepare a comprehensive list of pending land acquisition cases and vendor-related packages to resolve all bottlenecks in the implementation of these schemes. Uttam said the inspection was meant to assess on-ground challenges and finalize budget allocations, and that funds would be released in a timely manner to ensure uninterrupted progress. He criticised the previous BRS government for compromising Telangana's irrigation interests. 'KCR mortgaged the interests of farmers in Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, and Khammam. Despite the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal allocating 811 TMC to undivided Andhra Pradesh, the then CM and Irrigation Minister asked for only 299 TMC for Telangana, allowing Andhra Pradesh to claim 511 TMC,' he said. 'This injustice continued from 2015 to 2023.' After assuming office, he said he filed a review petition before the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II seeking a revised allocation in favour of Telangana, based on the state's geographical area and population under the Krishna basin. 'We have asked for 511 TMC or at least 60–70% share,' he added. The Minister also announced that the State Government has sanctioned and given ₹25 lakh ex gratia to each of the six families of the workers still trapped inside the SLBC tunnel. He said the Geological Survey of India had issued a warning that reaching the trapped section is extremely dangerous. A high-level technical committee has been appointed to oversee rescue and the remaining tunnelling works. He reiterated that completing irrigation projects in the Palamuru region is a top priority for the Congress government and assured that long-pending schemes would finally be delivered to benefit lakhs of farmers in southern Telangana. He also held meetings with top district officials in Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy on paddy procurement and ration card distribution, indicating that the government is focused on both long-term and immediate needs of farmers and rural households. Uttam Kumar Reddy sets timelines for Mahabubnagar irrigation projects

Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday announced Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme would be completed by December, 2027, ending years of delay and injustice to farmers under the previous regime. Accompanied by Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, Telangana Planning Board Vice Chairman Dr G. Chinna Reddy, and MP Dr Mallu Ravi, the Minister undertook an extensive aerial and on-ground inspection of major irrigation sites across Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy districts. The tour began with the inspection of the Stage-I pumping station and the Narlapur reservoir, which holds a capacity of 6.4 tmcft. They reviewed the progress of the open canal between Narlapur and Yedula, part of Package-3 of the Palamuru-Rangareddy project. A detailed review of the Package-3 was done and the concerned Chief Engineer and the construction agency were given a deadline of six months to complete the Package-3. The Minister inspected the Yedula reservoir and Stage-II pumping station at Teegalapally in Kodair mandal. This segment features 10 pumps of 145 MW capacity each, with a discharge capacity of 23,000 cusecs, feeding into a 6.5 tmcft reservoir. Notably, it includes India's largest underground cavern — 30 metres wide, 415 metres long, and 90 metres deep - located 160 metres below the surface. The Stage-III pumping station and Vattem reservoir in Vattem village of Bijinepally mandal featuring 10 pumps of 145 MW capacity each and identical discharge capacity were inspected. Later, Mr. Reddy told the reporters that a timeline has been fixed to complete the works necessary to fill 50 tmcft of water in the Narlapur, Yedula, Vattem, and Karivena reservoirs. The Udandapur reservoir would be filled within the overall March 2026 deadline. He also directed that the Kalwakurthy, Nettempadu, Bheema, and Koilsagar projects must be fully completed by March 2026.
