L.A. entertainment production fell last quarter, even as TV started to pick up

A still from the TV series 'High Potential,' which is filmed in Los Angeles. Hollywood production faced another challenging quarter, as on-location shoot days from April to June decreased 6.2% compared with the same time period last year, according to a new report. The total number of shoot days in the second quarter was 5,394, compared with 5,749 a year ago, according to the nonprofit organization FilmLA, which tracks production in the Greater Los Angeles region. That total is down 32.5% compared with the five-year average. Production of feature films and commercials were significantly lower than last year. Film production decreased 21.4% to 553 shoot days, while commercial shoots decreased 15.3% to 692 days, FilmLA said. Advertisement The one bright spot was television production, which saw an increase of 17% compared with the same time period last year, with 2,224 on-location shoot days. That's the highest total since early 2024, though it is still 32.6% lower than the five-year quarterly average, FilmLA said. Television's sunnier quarter for was helped by production gains for TV dramas (up 9.4%), reality TV (up 29.5%) and pilots (up 364.7%). Production of TV comedies, however, fell 41.5% compared with last year. Shows such as the ABC procedural 'High Potential,' Fox's '9-1-1,' and Netflix's 'Lincoln Lawyer' all shot in the Greater L.A. region during the second quarter. Advertisement The report's 'other' category, which includes photo shoots, documentary production, student films, music and industrial videos and online content, saw a decrease of 17.3% compared with the previous year's quarter. California's entertainment industry recently received a lifeline in the form of an expanded state film and TV tax credit and a revamped program that allows more types of productions to apply for incentives. Recent legislation passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom raised the cap for the film and TV tax credit to $750 million, up from $330 million, a move that Hollywood insiders said would increase the number of productions shot in California and potentially stem the tide of so-called runaway production to other states and countries that offer generous incentive packages. Advertisement FilmLA President Paul Audley noted the new legislation in a statement, saying the group was 'eager to meet with and work alongside our union partners, our industry, and our community, finding ways to make production in the Greater Los Angeles area as affordable, accessible, and straightforward as possible.' Last month, the California Film Commission said the latest round of the state's film and television tax credit program will provide government incentives to 48 upcoming movie projects. The slate, which includes both major studio projects and independent films, is expected to employ more than 6,500 cast and crew members and 32,000 background performers, measured in days worked. These projects will pay more than $302 million in wages for California workers.

The Lincoln Lawyer actor to star opposite Schindler's List icon for action thriller

The Lincoln Lawyer star Angus Sampson has been keeping himself busy with a couple of projects away from the Netflix legal drama. WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Lincoln Lawyer. ‌ Angus Sampson will feature in two upcoming films as fans anticipate The Lincoln Lawyer's comeback. ‌ Netflix viewers are sitting on tenterhooks, desperately hoping The Lincoln Lawyer's fourth series will arrive sooner rather than later following that nail-biting finale which witnessed Mickey Haller (portrayed by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) getting nicked on suspicion of murder. ‌ When the courtroom drama eventually returns, Mickey's mates and workmates are certain to pull out all the stops to assist him, including private detective Cisco Wojciechowski (Angus Sampson). Whilst details regarding The Lincoln Lawyer's fourth series launch date remain under wraps, Sampson has been grafting on several ventures. His first undertaking will be the adrenaline-fueled survival thriller Deep Water, which is currently in post-production. The official synopsis for Deep Water states: "A group of international passengers en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai are forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. "Now they must work together in hopes to overcome the frenzy of sharks drawn to the wreckage." ‌ Beyond the gripping storyline, Deep Water boasts a familiar cast appearing alongside Sampson, which is guaranteed to draw audiences. Spearheading the production is actor Aaron Eckhart, who'll be recognised for his portrayal of Harvey Dent in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight back in 2008. ‌ Joining them is the legendary Ben Kingsley, known for his roles in Schindler's List and Gandhi, who will also feature in the forthcoming Netflix film The Thursday Murder Club. Alongside Deep Water, Sampson is set to reprise his role as father Dom Chalmers in the Australian BBC sitcom Bump for its festive special. The series concluded after five seasons last year, but fans can look forward to a film adaptation where the extended family embarks on a South American cruise. Oly (Nathalie Morris) and Santi (Carlos Sanson Jr) found their happy ending and will be holidaying with their second baby Angelo, who is just a few months old. The Lincoln Lawyer is currently available for streaming on Netflix.

How is Prime Video's Ballard linked to Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer?

Ballard is set to come out this week, delving into the complicated life of Detective Renee Ballard. Prime Video's Ballard has almost landed - but how is the drama connected to The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix? Set in Los Angeles, Ballard is a 10-part drama that sees former homicide detective Renee Ballard (played by Maggie Q) start heading up the cold cases division with help from her team of volunteers. ‌ As well as trying to solve some of the history's most complicated long-forgotten crimes, Ballard is trying to overcome her personal issues with some within the LAPD. ‌ So as Ballard premieres on Wednesday, July 9, on Prime Video, fans are curious to know how it ties in with a hit Netflix legal drama. How is Prime Video's Ballard linked to Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer? The Lincoln Lawyer, which revolves around the work of charming lawyer Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), is a much-loved drama on Netflix which returned for its third outing earlier this year. Fans are now eagerly waiting for its fourth series to debut, although a release date hasn't yet been confirmed. Ballard and The Lincoln Lawyer are set in the same universe as the series are both based on books written by author Michael Connelly. In fact, Ballard is a spin-off of Bosch: Legacy, another creation of Connelly's with Detective Ballard first introduced in the Harry Bosch series' grand finale earlier this year. ‌ Another key tie between the two series is that Bosch, portrayed by Titus Welliver, is Mickey Haller's half-brother. It has already been confirmed in Ballard's trailer that Welliver will be reprising his role as Bosch in the Prime Video drama but it is very unlikely that fans are going to be treated to a Lincoln Lawyer crossover. ‌ The Lincoln Lawyer has been airing on Netflix since its debut while Ballard will be coming out on Prime Video. So as the shows are made by completely different studios, these characters are not going to cross paths despite their indirect link via the books. But as Amazon Studios owns both Ballard and Bosch, this is why these series are able to be connected on the small screen. Ballard was able to help Bosch with one of the most difficult cases of his career at the end of Bosch: Legacy so is he going to be able to repay the favour in the spin-off Ballard?

Jurassic World Rebirth cast and their salaries: The iconic franchise of Jurassic World is all set to storm cinemas once again on July 2, 2025, and it's not just the creatures or CGI that are making headlines—but the massive paychecks behind the scenes. Yes, you read that right! With Gareth Edwards at the helm and a cast stacked with A-listers like Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, this reboot is as much a financial blockbuster as it is a cinematic one. Here's a look at the eye-popping salaries fueling one of this year's biggest box office bets. Here's what the budget for Jurassic World Rebirth is According to several reports, Gareth Edwards's reboot, Jurassic World Rebirth, is carrying a lean USD 180 million (Rs 1,460 crore) production price tag. After the previous trilogy cost as much as Rs 3,650 crore (with marketing), this return-to-roots budget is more streamlined. Still, expectations for visual spectacle remain sky-high. Here's how much the main leads have been paid: Scarlett Johanson Scarlett Johansson, a Hollywood titan, is rumoured to earn USD 15–20 million (Rs 1,200–1,600 crore) for her role as an adventure lead. Her blockbuster legacy—from Black Widow to Avengers—underscores why studios still pay top dollar, often adding backend bonuses if the film tops Rs 3,000 crore globally. Mahershala Ali Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali may command USD 2–3 million (Rs 160–240 crore) for his portrayal of security chief Duncan Kincaid. His reputation brings prestige with punch, justifying his prominent supporting role. Jonathan Bailey Jonathan Bailey is set to earn around USD 500–600 thousand (Rs 40–48 crore) as Dr. Henry Loomis. Having transitioned from TV's Bridgerton—where he earned USD 100K–150K per episode—Bailey shows how prestige TV translates into film negotiating power. Here's how much the supporting casts have been paid: Rupert Friend (Martin Krebs): Estimated USD 700–800 K (Rs 56–64 crore)—a rise from his Hitman paychecks. Manuel García-Rulfo (Reuben Delgado): Likely USD 700 K (Rs 56 crore), matching his Lincoln Lawyer earnings. Luna Blaise (Teresa Delgado): A rising talent predicted to earn USD 300 K (Rs 4 crore). David Iacono: Newcomer with growing cachet, possibly earning USD 250 K (Rs 20 crore). Jurassic World Rebirth thou ghtfully balances megastar salaries—hundreds of crores—for household names with mid-six-figure deals for rising faces. With a refreshed Rs 1,460 crore budget, the film avoids overspend yet guarantees spectacle, aligning with contemporary audience tastes shaped by streaming platforms. From Rs 1,200 crore lead paychecks to Rs 20 crore newcomer contracts, Rebirth showcases how studios allocate blockbuster budgets today—high risk, high stakes, and high rewards.

Lincoln Lawyer fans should watch this upcoming drama set in the same universe ahead of series 4 debut

Lincoln Lawyer is expected to return for season four later this year or potentially early 2026 on Netflix. WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Lincoln Lawyer. Lincoln Lawyer fans are eagerly waiting for the Netflix hit's comeback but in the meantime, there is another show from the works of author Michael Connelly on the way. ‌ Season three of Mickey Haller's (played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) dropped on Netflix in October 2024, ending with a cliffhanger, which could mean the charming lawyer is going to be put behind bars. ‌ Thankfully, that's not quite the end of the story just yet with The Lincoln Lawyer renewed for season four a few months later, although an official release date hasn't been announced. The Netflix legal drama is based on the award-winning book series by author Michael Connelly with series four expected to be based on his sixth novel, The Law of Innocence. But while fans wait for its return, another book set in Connelly's universe, as well as Prime Video's Bosch, is gearing up to come out. Based on the author's Renee Ballard book series, Ballard is the next crime drama to be released on Prime Video. Inspired by real-life LAPD Detective Mitzi Roberts, who was also a consultant on Bosch, Ballard is relentless and smart with a strong moral compass that guides everything that she does. ‌ In the books, she works on the LAPD midnight shift and focuses on her complicated relationship with being on the force as well as her own issues. Ballard will be portrayed by Designated Survivor actress Maggie Q who got her initial introduction during the series finale of Bosch: Legacy. ‌ She teamed up with Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) to work on the Flower Girls missing women case which has been deemed as the toughest of his career. Ballard will be released on Tuesday, July 9, on Prime Video and will consist of 10 episodes in total. Q will be joined by Fargo star John Carroll Lynch as Ballard's seasons partner Tomas Laffront, as well as actress Courtney Taylor as her ex-protégé Samira Park. It has already been confirmed that Welliver will reprise his role as Harry Bosch in the drama as it picks up after the Bosch: Legacy finale. As of yet, there has been no confirmation that Lincoln Lawyer star Garcia-Rulfo or any other members of the Netflix cast are going to feature.
