1-2 Special Takes Radu Jude's ‘Dracula' for North America

Neophyte distributor 1-2 Special has picked up North American rights to Dracula, the upcoming horror comedy from Romanian auteur Radu Jude (Bad Luck Banging Or Loony Porn). The film, which will have its world premiere in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, is billed as a very singular take on the legendary vampire, featuring 'vampires, zombies, lots of blood, sex, AI images, car chases, and Jude's trademark black comedy.' 'One can say 'brought back', since this myth circled the world and the American cinema changed it so many times. I hope it is now time to see the myth wearing new clothes, made in the heart of real Transylvania. When I am asked who is Dracula in the film, I always reply that the film itself is Dracula. I would also add that this film is my humble homage to some great American underrated auteurs: Ed Wood, Andy Warhol and the Fluxus filmmakers.' The deal was negotiated by Luxbox on behalf of the filmmakers with 1-2 Special. The acquisition marks the continuation of 1-2 Special's relationship with Radu Jude, whose Kontinental '25 the company picked up out of the Berlin film festival this year, marking their first international acquisition. The modern-day drama, won Jude the silver bear for best screenplay. Former Sideshow executive Jason Hellerstein launched 1-2 Special earlier this year, with backing from private equity, pitching the company as a new theatrical-first, all rights distributor, dedicated to domestic and international art house cinema. Dracula is produced by Romania's Saga Film, together with Austria's Nabis Filmgroup, Luxembourg's Paul Thiltges Distribution, Brazil's RT Features, Luxembourg's Samsa Film, Switzerland's Bord Cadre Films, the UK's Sovereign Films and Romania's MicroFILM. Nour Films Takes French Rights to Lav Diaz's ‘Magellan' Ahead of Cannes Premiere (EXCLUSIVE)

Sales agency Luxbox has closed a distribution deal for France with Nour Films on Lav Diaz's 'Magellan,' starring Gael García Bernal, which has its world premiere in the Cannes Premiere section of the Cannes Film Festival. The film, set in the 16th century, follows Magellan, a young and ambitious Portuguese navigator. He rebels against the power of the King of Portugal, who doesn't support his dream of discovering the world, and persuades the Spanish monarchy to fund his bold expedition to the fabled lands of the East. Upon reaching the islands of the Malayan Archipelago, Magellan's mind changes. He becomes obsessed with conquest and conversion, which sparks violent uprisings beyond his control. The Nour Films team said in a joint statement: 'With rare evocative power, 'Magellan' stands out as a new masterpiece by Lav Diaz. The Filipino filmmaker delivers a pictorial fresco of the 16th century, at once a sensory immersion and an uncompromising political perspective on colonial violence. 'Gael García Bernal plays an unsettling Magellan, full of contradictions. His magnetic, restrained performance gives flesh to this mythical character, without ever sanctifying him. A monumental film that Nour Films is proud to support.' Nour Films was the distributor of Berlinale 2018 Golden Bear winner 'Touch Me Not,' Cannes 2023 Caméra d'Or winner 'Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,' Berlinale 2023 documentary 'Seven Winters in Tehran' and Berlinale 2024 Teddy Award winner 'All Shall Be Well.' The producer of 'Magellan' is Joaquim Sapinho at Rosa Filmes in Portugal. The co-producers are Andergraun Films (Spain), Black Cap Pictures (Philippines), Ten17P (Philippines), El Viaje Filmes (Spain), Volos Films (Taiwan), Lib Films (France) and AKP21 (France). Diaz's previous films include 'The Woman Who Left,' which won Venice's Golden Lion in 2016, and 'From What Is Before,' which won Locarno's Golden Leopard in 2014. The cast is led by Ubeimar Rios, Rebeca Andrade and Guillermo Cardona. Luxbox's CEO Fiorella Moretti and head of international sales Jennyfer Gautier in a joint statement said: 'We felt instantly struck by the singular vision of the director and the beauty in the film. 'A Poet' is bold, intimate, and quietly subversive. The film navigates contemporary and deeply human themes with a touch of lightness and unexpected humor. We were especially drawn to how it explores the desire to create, and how its central character finds glimmers of hope in an often unforgiving world.' Sarmiento G. said: 'Simon's vision is unique, sarcastic and uncompromising, he tackles a wide variety of subjects and is unafraid of approaching them with a sense of humor and tragedy alike. We look forward to be premiering Simon's latest work in Cannes' official selection once again.' Soto said: 'Luxbox has an amazing catalog of amazing films and they carefully handpicked just a few each year so that they can devote all their efforts to them. We want our film to be seen by many and I believe Fiorella and her team will help us reach a wider audience.'
