Four killed in Lahad Datu and Kota Kinabalu mishaps

LAHAD DATU: Three men, including the driver of an Isuzu Dmax, were killed after the four-wheel-drive (4WD) they were travelling in collided with a trailer at Km 26 along Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan, Tuesday night. Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station Chief Sumsoa Rashid said the victims have been identified as the driver Mohd Azizi, 28, and front passenger Mohd Rasman Ahmat Kechil, 28, as well as Muhammad Zulkhairi Ismail, 29, who was seated in the back. 'All the victims were trapped in the vehicle and were extricated by the firefighters before being confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel. 'The trailer driver, 61, sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatment,' he said. According to Sumsoa, a distress call regarding the accident was received via MERS999 at 8.52pm, and a team of 12 firefighters, along with machinery and the Emergency Services Assistance Unit, was immediately dispatched to the scene, located 30km from the station. He said all the deceased were handed over to the police for further action, and the operation concluded at 12.40am after confirming there were no further hazards at the scene. Lahad Datu Deputy Police Chief Supt Jimmy Panyau said the three victims, who were friends, were on their way to Sandakan when the accident occurred. 'Preliminary investigations found that the driver of the 4WD is believed to have lost control and veered into the opposite lane before colliding with the trailer,' he said. 'Due to the impact of the collision, both the trailer and the 4WD plunged into a ravine on the left side of the road, with the vehicle carrying the victims also crashing into an oil palm tree,' he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He urged witnesses to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting traffic investigation officer Insp. Mohamad Humaidi Harun at 089-881255 or by visiting the Lahad Datu district police headquarters. Meanwhile, in KOTA KINABALU, a 67-year-old died after his Toyota Land Cruiser crashed into an electricity pole in Luyang on Wednesday, causing a power outage in the area. The victim, identified as Yong Ket Kong, was driving along Jalan Kolam when he lost control of the vehicle at 12.50pm. The accident happened opposite Wong Kwok Restaurant, near Lorong 5. Witnesses claimed the man's car swerved before crashing into an electricity pole and landed in a drain. The impact caused electrical cables to loosen, resulting in a power disruption affecting parts of Luyang. Medical officers who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead on the spot. Emergency responders, including personnel from the police and the Fire and Rescue Department, quickly arrived to secure the accident site and manage traffic flow. Lahad Datu crash claims three lives
LAHAD DATU: Three men were killed after the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were travelling in collided with a trailer carrying palm oil at Batu 16, Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan, on Tuesday night (July 1). Houses razed in Ranau, Penampang

RANAU: A family lost all of their possessions after their house and cars were razed, early Monday. Head of the Ranau BBP Station, PPgB Rantey Fred, said the incident happened in Kg Poring Jalan Hot Spring Ranau at about 1am. According to him, a call was received through the station line and a group of seven firemen, led by the Operations Commander, PBK II Becket Gumat, rushed to the location. 'Arriving at the scene located 19km from the station, we found a two-storey non-permanent house and three vehicles, namely, a Proton Exora, Suzuki Jeep and Perodua Kancil engulfed in flames. 'The firemen extinguished the fire by using two 200ft jets of water from the machinery tank. Unfortunately, the house and cars were destroyed,' he said, adding that the operation ended at 3.30am. In PENAMPANG, semi-permanent house was partially destroyed in a fire that broke out along Jalan Sindanan, early Monday. The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said the Penampang Fire Station received an emergency call at 9.17am via the MERS999. A team of seven firefighters, led by Operations Commander PBK II KUP Marcus Junior, was dispatched to the scene, located 3km from the station. They were assisted by six personnel from the Kota Kinabalu Fire Station using two fire engines, an EMRS unit and a water tanker. The house was 30 per cent destroyed. 'The fire was brought under control by 9.38am and the operation ended at 10.20am,' the department said in a statement. A 37-year-old man suffered breathing difficulties and was treated on the scene by the EMRS team. Motorcyclist dies under 8-ton lorry in Inanam crash

The victim was found pinned under the lorry and had been removed by members of the public before emergency services arrived. Maritime to focus on hotspots in east coast, Labuan waters

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Malaysian Maritime) will continue to enhance its operational readiness and presence in the Lahad Datu Maritime Zone, the waters of the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), and the waters of the Federal Territory (FT) of Labuan to curb maritime crimes and safeguard the sovereignty of national waters. Sabah and FT Labuan Maritime Director Maritime First Admiral Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid@Razali, said the focus of operations is on hotspots based on intelligence and current arrest statistics. Advertisement He said Malaysian Maritime's operational assets are equipped with weaponry such as automatic rifles and pistols, used in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the current threat level. He emphasised that tactical and operational measures being implemented include high-scale 24-hour patrols, tactical training, and strategic cooperation through joint operations and continuous information sharing with Esscom and the Fisheries Department. Among the main identified threats are armed intrusions by external elements, smuggling of firearms and drugs, attempted kidnappings by cross-border organised crime groups, and smuggling of controlled goods such as subsidised cooking oil, petrol and diesel. 'The High Readiness Response approach continues to be adapted to ensure that maritime control remains at an optimum level,' he said. Meanwhile, Mohd Khairulanuar said Sabah Maritime recorded a total of 116 arrest cases in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan in the first six months of this year. Sabah Maritime has also conducted six Search and Rescue (Carilamat or SAR) operations from January to June this year. Mohd Khairulanuar also emphasised that Malaysian Maritime remains committed to protecting maritime communities and enforcing national laws without compromise.
