Four killed in Lahad Datu and Kota Kinabalu mishaps

LAHAD DATU: Three men, including the driver of an Isuzu Dmax, were killed after the four-wheel-drive (4WD) they were travelling in collided with a trailer at Km 26 along Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan, Tuesday night. Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station Chief Sumsoa Rashid said the victims have been identified as the driver Mohd Azizi, 28, and front passenger Mohd Rasman Ahmat Kechil, 28, as well as Muhammad Zulkhairi Ismail, 29, who was seated in the back. 'All the victims were trapped in the vehicle and were extricated by the firefighters before being confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel. 'The trailer driver, 61, sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatment,' he said. According to Sumsoa, a distress call regarding the accident was received via MERS999 at 8.52pm, and a team of 12 firefighters, along with machinery and the Emergency Services Assistance Unit, was immediately dispatched to the scene, located 30km from the station. He said all the deceased were handed over to the police for further action, and the operation concluded at 12.40am after confirming there were no further hazards at the scene. Lahad Datu Deputy Police Chief Supt Jimmy Panyau said the three victims, who were friends, were on their way to Sandakan when the accident occurred. 'Preliminary investigations found that the driver of the 4WD is believed to have lost control and veered into the opposite lane before colliding with the trailer,' he said. 'Due to the impact of the collision, both the trailer and the 4WD plunged into a ravine on the left side of the road, with the vehicle carrying the victims also crashing into an oil palm tree,' he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He urged witnesses to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting traffic investigation officer Insp. Mohamad Humaidi Harun at 089-881255 or by visiting the Lahad Datu district police headquarters. Meanwhile, in KOTA KINABALU, a 67-year-old died after his Toyota Land Cruiser crashed into an electricity pole in Luyang on Wednesday, causing a power outage in the area. The victim, identified as Yong Ket Kong, was driving along Jalan Kolam when he lost control of the vehicle at 12.50pm. The accident happened opposite Wong Kwok Restaurant, near Lorong 5. Witnesses claimed the man's car swerved before crashing into an electricity pole and landed in a drain. The impact caused electrical cables to loosen, resulting in a power disruption affecting parts of Luyang. Medical officers who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead on the spot. Emergency responders, including personnel from the police and the Fire and Rescue Department, quickly arrived to secure the accident site and manage traffic flow. Bus accident in Ayer Hitam involved 45 Indonesian workers
BATU PAHAT: A tour bus transporting 45 Indonesian plantation workers was involved in a serious accident at Kilometer 80.7 of the North-South Expressway near Ayer Hitam early this morning. The workers had just arrived from Lombok, Indonesia, and were en route to Johor Bahru when the collision occurred. According to Jati Heri Winarto, Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Bahru, the group consisted of 55 workers who landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport around 9 pm. While 10 workers took a van, the remaining 45 boarded the ill-fated bus. The accident, which also involved two lorries, resulted in two fatalities. The victims were identified as Hidirman, 43, and Zulhadi, 44, who died at the scene. Another worker, Nusiah, suffered severe injuries, including the loss of her left hand and fractured ribs, and remains under treatment at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital. Fourteen other workers sustained minor injuries and were discharged after receiving medical attention. Firefighters confirmed that the crash occurred around 12:27 am, leaving two dead and 16 injured. Jati Heri stated that the Indonesian Consulate is coordinating the repatriation of the deceased and seeking compensation through the Social Security Organisation. Meanwhile, Batu Pahat District Police Chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani explained that the bus collided with a tanker lorry being towed by another lorry. The bus driver suffered shoulder, rib, and hand injuries, while five passengers reported head pain. The drivers of the lorries and other passengers escaped unharmed. Police open three investigation papers over Plus highway obstruction
REMBAU: Police have opened three investigation papers and arrested a man believed to be the owner of one of three vehicles involved in a recent traffic obstruction incident on the southbound stretch of the North-South Expressway (Plus), near the Pedas Linggi lay-by. Rembau district police chief Superintendent Hasani Hussain said the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested in the Seremban area at about 12.30am today. "We are still tracking down the remaining suspects, who are currently at large. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is a vehicle repossession agent. The group is believed to have briefly blocked the road while attempting to repossess a car. "They reportedly obstructed traffic for only a short duration," he said when contacted. Hasani said the case is being investigated under Section 279 of the Penal Code for negligent or reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The case is also being investigated under Section 341 of the Penal Code for wrongful obstruction of public passage, which provides for up to one month's jail, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both. Additionally, police have initiated a probe under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing obstruction on the road. If convicted, offenders face a fine of between RM1,000 and RM5,000, and may have their driving licence suspended for up to 12 months. "Police take any form of disruption to traffic flow seriously. Such actions pose a danger to other road users, particularly on highways where vehicles travel at high speeds. "Not only are such acts unlawful, but they also have the potential to cause fatal accidents," he added. Indonesians in Johor bus crash had just landed at KLIA
BATU PAHAT: The bus involved in a pre-dawn crash at KM80.7 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) was carrying 45 Indonesian plantation workers who had just arrived from Lombok, Indonesia. The Consul of the Consulate-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Baru, Jati Heri Winarto, said that the workers were among a group of 55 from Lombok, Indonesia, who had just landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at around 9pm on Thursday (July 3) and were headed to Johor Baru. He said that upon their arrival from Lombok, Indonesia, 45 workers boarded the bus while 10 others were on a van. "Two victims, identified as Hidirman, 43, and Zulhadi, 44, were pronounced dead at the scene, and another victim identified as Nusiah sustained severe injuries and is still receiving treatment at the emergency unit of Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI). "Meanwhile, 14 other workers who suffered minor injuries and had also received treatment at the same hospital have been discharged and continued their journey to Johor Bahru," he told reporters at the HSNI Forensic Medical Unit here on Thursday. Firemen earlier confirmed that two people had died and 16 were injured in the accident involving a bus and two lorries, which occurred at 12.27am. Jati Heri said that as of 2.30pm, the bodies of both deceased were still undergoing post-mortem examinations while another victim was still receiving further treatment after losing her left hand and fracturing several ribs. The Indonesian Consulate is currently working to arrange the repatriation of the bodies to Lombok and to obtain appropriate compensation, including through the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). Meanwhile, Batu Pahat police chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the bus involved rear-ended a tanker lorry that was being towed by another lorry. "The bus driver sustained injuries to his shoulder, ribs and hand while five other passengers complained of head pain. "The tanker lorry driver, the towing lorry driver and the remaining passengers were not injured," he said.
