Surrender Yourself to ‘Gathering Dust,' Gary Card's '90s-Inspired Ode to Creative Chaos
In a world that prizes order, Gary Card embraces mess with open arms. The British artist is the latest name to take overPlaster Magazine's London HQ, transforming the two-floor retail space into a surreal sculptural fever dream. The junk shop-cum-exhibition brings life to Card's inner world and unrealized projects, rendered through his acclaimed brand of grotesque charm, unapologetic excess and theatrical fantasy. 'It's chaos,' he told Hypeart. 'That's why I like it.' TitledGathering Dust, the exhibition is a love letter to '90s London, in all of its eccentricities and oddball arcades. The artist recalls his arrival in the city and the 'dilapidated, chockablocks full of stuff' that once ruled Camden — storefronts overflowing with niche splendors of every variety: MAD comics, vintage Japanese toys, sex paraphernalia.'This is harking back to those hectic spaces that I used to love, the idea of just surrounding yourself with all your favorite stuff. You'd just get lost in it entirely.' It's a spirit that spills onto the ground floor installation, something Card describes as 'wall-to-wall claustrophobic fun.' Personal ephemera, artifacts collectibles pulled from his decades-long career as an artist and set designer envelope the entirety of the space, with no inch left empty. 'Imagine this heightened version of me inhabiting the space, hanging out and making strange stuff,' he explains, drawing parallels between the immersive installation and a fantasy workshop. Peppered amongst the hoards of masks, paintings, figurines and books are Card's 'Trinkets,' an ongoing series of object-portraits, shown for the first time. Gears shift upstairs into a more traditional art show, as Card debuts a new series of busts. Sculpted in his signature masking-tape method, a technique he's been perfecting since he was 12-years old, the resin-dipped rainbow of characters bring us further into the depths of Card's psychedelic universe. Unsettling and funny at once, these figures revel in the cross-sections of cute, dark and surreal, with teeth-baring grins that pull you in and hold you tight. 'I love people and faces — all my personal artwork is figurative. My set career is about making things around people and my art surrounds people themselves. They compliment each other in that regard.' For Card, whose credits as a set designer include the likes of JW Anderson, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lady Gaga and FKA Twigs,Gathering Dustbuilds on a long-held desire to marry his two creative careers. 'It just feels right and makes sense for me to bring in some of those immersive, enveloping worlds into my art.' In addition to the artist's own contributions, the show stays true to its retail-inspired roots, featuring a host of prints, zines, garments and goods by vintage collectiveUnified Goods, Breakdown Press and artists 4FSB (Jamie Bull), Danny Taylor andFerry Gouwfor sale. More than an exhibition,Gathering Duststands as a maximalist, lived-in tribute to memory, identity and the sheer joy of surrendering yourself to the chaos. The takeover marks the first installment of an ongoing curatorial series from the London-based publication, inviting artists to reimagine its Soho storefront in their unique creative visions. Since opening the store earlier this year,Plasterfounders Milo Astaire and Finn Constantine have envisioned the space as a platform 'where artists can do what they do best: make it feel alive and ever-changing,' they noted. 'Gary has done just that and some. He has created a world you won't want to leave. A space that you could be lost in for days.' Gathering Dustis now on view in London through August 9. 70% of APAC occupiers plan to expand warehousing portfolio in India: Report
APAC occupiers see India as a resilient logistics destination, driven by supply chain diversification, ESG focus, and infrastructure growth, says CBRE report Mumbai Nearly 70 per cent of Asia Pacific (APAC) occupiers plan to expand their warehousing footprint in India over the next two years, according to a report by CBRE, a real estate consultancy firm. This growing interest reflects the broader shift towards supply chain diversification, as companies aim to reduce dependency on single-market strategies, the report noted. Despite near-term uncertainties, the country remains a preferred destination for both global and domestic corporates. The sector is anticipating strong demand in South-East Asia and India across diverse segments, including third-party logistics (3PL), e-commerce, engineering and manufacturing (E&M), auto & auto ancillary, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). Larger deals and modern facilities signal occupiers' shift towards future-proof, compliant, and ESG-aligned warehousing, painting a promising picture of the sector's forward momentum. Anshuman Magazine, chairman and chief executive officer-India, South-East Asia, Middle East & Africa, CBRE, said, 'India's logistics sector is undergoing a transformational growth phase, fuelled by robust macroeconomic fundamentals, accelerated infrastructure development, and a maturing occupier ecosystem that is increasingly focused on scalability, efficiency, and sustainability.' The sector is showing strong confidence in India's market potential, with more than 80 per cent of India-based occupiers (both Indian and global firms with operations in India) planning to expand their warehousing portfolios over the next two years. Meanwhile, nearly 90 per cent of India-based respondents expressed an intention to expand their logistics footprint over the next two to five years. The I&L sector is charting strong growth, driven by institutional capital, supportive regulatory reforms, and strategic penetration into tier-II and tier-III cities. This upward trajectory is reinforced by the rise of the 3PL segment, increased outsourcing, and a growing focus on sustainability and compliance. 'The insights from our survey reaffirm India's position as the most preferred logistics destination in the region. With resilient demand drivers, growing institutional participation, and future-ready infrastructure, the long-term growth trajectory for India's logistics sector remains exceptionally strong,' Magazine added.

A Baltic triangle
July 8, 2025 - Aleksandra Kuczyńska-Zonik - Hot Topics Issue 4 2025 Magazine Photo courtesy of Aleksandra Kuczyńska-Zonik / Institute of Central Europe Historically, the Baltic Sea has held strategic significance, a status that has only intensified since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, European political and elite circles have started to pay closer attention to the EU's Eastern Neighbourhood, including the activities of the Russian Federation in the Baltic Sea. The Kremlin uses this region to assert influence and challenge the West, reflecting its imperial ambitions to surpass Europe militarily and economically. As the war in Ukraine continues, Russia exploits the Baltic Sea to bypass sanctions and destabilize European states and their societies. The tensions it stirs are not limited to traditional military threats. They also involve unconventional tactics. An illustrative example is the so-called 'shadow fleet', a term used to describe vessels with unclear ownership operating in the Baltic without proper documentation. Russia employs them to circumvent western sanctions, especially those targeting oil exports. Evidence shows that the Kremlin has deployed a wide range of instruments to exert influence in the Baltic Sea region. These include attacks on critical infrastructure, the disruption of data transmission, acts of cyber-terrorism, disinformation campaigns, and espionage. All of them serve the purpose of undermining the security and cohesion of societies in the region. Given their broader implications, these developments should be regarded as integral to the overall security situation of the European continent. Equally important for European security – though in a positive light – is the cooperation among Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway in supporting Ukraine. They assist Kyiv both in its defensive efforts against Russian aggression and politically in its pursuit of integration with the European Union. According to estimates from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the Baltic Sea states are among the top aid donors to Ukraine. Estonia and Denmark each contribute 2.3 per cent of their GDP, followed by Lithuania (1.9 per cent), Latvia (1.5 per cent), Finland (1.1 per cent), Sweden (one per cent), and Poland (0.8 per cent). Beyond military aid, Baltic Sea countries have taken proactive steps to strengthen regional security. In February 2024, Latvia initiated the creation of a drone coalition, now made up of 19 states. Although not all are located in the region, they share a commitment to investing in drone production for Ukraine and providing military training for civilians. The second funding stream aligns with the 'whole-of-society' approach outlined in the EU Preparedness Union Strategy announced in March 2025. Inspired by comprehensive resilience policies from the Nordic countries, this new EU strategy proposes a holistic approach to security It calls for the involvement of state institutions, the private sector, public organizations and NGOs in addressing security and resilience. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have already adopted this model. Other distinctive features of the Baltic states' cooperation include the synchronization of their electricity grids and a focus on high-tech development. For Poland, the Baltic Sea region has become over the last few years an area of growing relevance. Once primarily viewed as a Central European country, Poland is now increasingly seen as part of the Baltic or Northern region. This shift reflects its shared threat perception with countries such as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. As a result, Poland's bilateral and multilateral relations with these countries serve as the foundation for its new northern policy. Poland proposed strengthening Baltic Sea control and supported the NATO 'Baltic Sentry' mission. Additionally, a new maritime strategy named 'Polish Sea' was unveiled by the Prime Minister Donald Tusk in May 2025, aimed at boosting security and protecting critical undersea infrastructure. Thus, when Szymon Hołownia, the Polish parliamentary speaker, announced the concept of the 'Baltic Triangle', he was referring to a close partnership among the Nordic countries, the Baltic states and Poland. While regional cooperation in the Baltic Sea area is built primarily on defence and resilience, this initiative would also encompass efforts toward the reconstruction of Ukraine. In this sense, it could also become a key element of the EU's post-war strategy for Ukraine. The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO marked a significant development for the region, even though both countries had already been actively involved in NATO operations and broader regional cooperation. Recognizably, their formal membership, while undeniably enhancing the Alliance's military strength, carries an important psychological impact. It is particularly appreciated by the smaller states, such as Latvia or Estonia, which hope that any potential attack from Russia on their territory would trigger a quick response from NATO member states. It is also appreciated by Poland. With NATO now expanded in the region, there has been a noticeable increase in air force monitoring, which takes place over the northern parts of the Baltic Sea, and in logistical support for the Baltic fleet, which tracks the movements of the Russian shadow fleet in the eastern basin. Additionally, Finland and Sweden are now working to secure access to the North Atlantic, a zone of both political and military importance, which is also very much welcomed by Poland. She is also an assistant professor in the department of political systems and international communication at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
