Jun 28, 2025 03:45 PM IST Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson to Crown Prince Haakon, heir to the throne, is accused of three rapes and several sexual assaults. He was arrested three times last year, including for violating a restraining order and due to the risk of evidence being lost. (AFP) The Norwegian police investigated Høiby for ten months before finally handing the case over to the prosecutors. Though his mom is married to a royal, Høiby does not have a royal title or duties. 'During the investigation, we have both received reports that have led to an investigation, and investigated cases that the police have come across in the investigation material along the way. Criminal cases have been investigated within several categories of cases, including violent and sexual offenses,' Oslo Police District said in a statement. The statement further lists that he is charged with several counts of sexual assault and rape. "I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number," police attorney Andreas Kruszewski told the BBC. Høiby's lawyer, Petar Sekulic, however, said that his client is "taking the accusations very seriously, but doesn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases - especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence". The Royal House of Norway stated that the case is proceeding through the legal system but didn't provide further details.

Photo: Lise Aaserud / NTB via AFP By Associated Press Oslo police have announced charges against Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Norway's crown princess, on multiple counts including rape, sexual assault and bodily harm after a months-long investigation of a case that involved a "double-digit" number of alleged victims. Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, has been under scrutiny since he was repeatedly arrested in 2024 amid allegations of rape and on preliminary charges of bodily harm and criminal damage. Oslo Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski said Høiby was cooperative during police questioning, which was now complete. Evidence in the case was drawn from sources including text messages, witness testimonies and police searches, the police attorney said. The charges included one case of rape involving intercourse and two cases of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexual assault and two cases of bodily harm, Kruszewksi said at a news conference. "I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number," he said. Defence attorney Petar Sekulic, in an email to The Associated Press , said Høiby was "absolutely taking the accusations very seriously, but doesn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases - especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence". The royal palace did not immediately respond to an emailed request from AP seeking comment. The palace was quoted by the Norwegian newswire NTB saying it would not comment while the case winds its way through the "normal procedures". The case was top news in Norway, where the royals were popular. Høiby, 28, previously lived with the royal couple and their two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, but now lived in a separate house nearby, according to Sekulic. Høiby remained free pending a possible trial and was entitled to a presumption of innocence until a court ruled otherwise. Once known affectionately as "Little Marius", Høiby grew up in the public eye enjoying the same wealth and privilege as his royal siblings, although his biological father, Morton Borg, served time in prison for drugs and violent offences. Høiby had acknowledged cocaine use and addiction. Norway's future queen made headlines in 2001 when she married Haakon because she was a single mother who had lived a freewheeling life with a companion who had been convicted on drug charges. - AP

Norwegian Royal Family Speaks Out After Future Queen's Son Charged With Raping and Assaulting Multiple Women

Norway's royal family has been in the headlines since last summer after Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was arrested three times and accused of a series of shocking sexual assaults. On Friday, June 27, the future queen's son was officially charged by Oslo police on multiple counts of rape, bodily harm and sexual assault—and the victims rank in the "double-digit" number. Høiby, 28, was born to Crown Princess Mette-Marit—who was a single mother before she met Crown Prince Haakon—and as the stepson to the future king, holds no royal title. Following a months-long investigation, police held a press conference announcing 23 charges against Høiby, including one case of rape with intercourse, two cases of rape without intercourse, one case of abuse in close relationships and two cases of bodily harm. The royal family issued a statement to Norwegian media outlet NRK reading, "The case is taking its course in the legal system, and follows normal procedures. We have nothing more to add." Per NRK, police stated that the royal family was not brought forward for questioning during the investigation. "The reason we have not questioned other members of the royal family than Høiby is that it is our assessment that their possible explanations would contribute very little to clarifying the cases," police attorney Andreas Kruszewski told the outlet. In November 2024, Høiby was arrested on suspicion of rape after two prior arrests involving his ex-girlfriend. In August, he was accused of criminal damage and bodily harm at the woman's Oslo apartment, and in September, he was arrested for violating a restraining order against his ex. In February 2025, additional rape accusations were reported involving model and TV presenter Linni Meister. However, per the Guardian, Kruszewski said there were many more women involved. "I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number,' the police attorney said during Friday's press conference. According to NRK, "Høiby's defense attorney, Ellen Holager Andenæs, states that there are between 15 and 20 victims." Høiby is the eldest of Crown Princess Mette-Marit's three children. He has a 21-year-old stepsister, Princess Ingrid Alexandra—who will go on to become Norway's queen one day—and a 19-year-old stepbrother, Prince Sverre Magnus, both of whom were born to the princess and Crown Prince Haakon after their 2001 marriage.
